SLAVES, WARFARE, AND IDEOLOGY IN THE GREEK HISTORIANS
264 pages; The warring Greek city-states of the classical period often found it advantageous to use slaves in their armed forces and to encourage rebellion or desertion among the slaves of their enemies. But since military service was highly esteemed, while the state of slavery was despised, classical Greek historians such as Herodotus, Thucydides and Xenophon tended not to discuss slave participation in war. This book examines the actual role of slaves in war, the neglect of it by historians, and the reasons for this reticence.

THE ARGONAUTICA OF APOLLONIUS Literary Studies
Light bumping to lower edge. Pencil marginalia to a couple of pages. Creasing and 1 chip along top edge of DJ. ; 216 pages; In recent years the subtlety and complexity of Apollonius' Argonautica have been better appreciated, but in Dr Hunter's view the purposes and aesthetic of the epic are still not readily understood and much basic analysis remains to be done. The present book seeks to offer some of that analysis and to place the Argonautica within its social and intellectual context. A series of studies deal with notions of heroism; with eros and the suffering of Medea; the role of the divine; poetic voice and literary self-consciousness; and the Ptolemaic context of the poem. A pervasive theme of the book is Apollonius' creative engagement with Homer, and a final chapter sketches out an approach to Virgil's use of Apollonius in the Aeneid. The Argonautica emerges as a brilliant and original experiment. This book is the only advanced study of the Argonautica currently available. All Greek is translated.

THE NEW COMEDY OF GREECE AND ROME
Very faint foxing else book is fine. ; 196 pages; In writing this book on the plays of New Comedy the author's aim is to fill a gap in the existing literature by concentrating on what one might look for in watching and reading these plays and why such an exercise might be pleasurable. The social comedy of Menander, Plautus and Terence provided a style of comic drama which was to prove the root of all subsequent western comedy. Dr Hunter gives a literary account of this drama, placing it in its ancient context and then ranging over a number of specific topics and themes: the dramatic craft of the poets, their exploration of how to give variety to stereotyped plots and characters, the presentation of women, the use of language and themes from tragedy, the place of moralising and philosophy. All Greek and Latin is translated.

POLICING ATHENS Social Control in the Attic Lawsuits, 420-320 B. C.
Minor shelfwear to DJ else Fine. ; 1.25 x 9.75 x 6.75 Inches; 324 pages; From household gossip to public beatings, this social history explores the many channels through which Athenians maintained public order. Virginia Hunter draws mostly on Attic court proceedings, which allowed for a wide range of evidence, including common rumors about a defendant's character and testimony, obtained under torture, of slaves against their masters. She describes Athenian "policing" as a form of social control that took place across a range of private and public levels. Not only does policing appear to have been a collective enterprise, but its methods were embedded in a variety of social institutions, resulting in the blurring of the line between state and society. Hunter's inquiry into topics such as household authority, disputes among kin, the presence of slaves in the house, gossip in the home and neighborhood, and forms of public punishment reveals a continuum extending from self-regulation among kin to punitive actions enforced by the state. Recognizing the bias of legal documents toward the wealthy, Hunter concentrates on exposing the voices of the less powerful and less privileged members of society, including women and slaves. In so doing she is among the first to address systematically such important issues as the authority of women, self-help, and corporal punishment.

; Recherches Et Rencontres Vol. 29; 170 pages

HELLENISTIC POETRY
Scholar's name to ffep (R. E. Fantham) in pencil with light pencil markings on a couple of pages. Very light shelfwear to book else fine. DJ spine is sunned with tears to top of DJ spine and a few small chips. ; Special Edition for Sandpiper books -- reprint of 1988 edition. In this study of the Hellenistic poets of the third century B. C. Hutchinson provides a much-needed picture of the poetry of the period while demonstrating its quality and vitality. The work of the Hellenistic poets in the third century BC has not only an important place in Greek literature, but also a particular significance for Latin poetry. Hutchinson explores the works of such writers as Theocritus, Callimachus, and Apollonius of Rhodes--developing a generalconception of poetry that centers around the poets' handling of tone, level, and form--and offers a fresh analysis of the influence of Hellenistic poetry on the city of Rome. Despite much technical work on the texts and language of these authors - Theocritus, Callimachus, Apollonius Rhodius, and others - previous literary criticism on most of the major figures is limited in quantity and scope. He explores the work of the individual writers in turn, while developing a general conception of the poetry as a whole, centred around the poets' handling of tone, level, and form. The book concludes with a fresh approach to the influence of Hellenistic poets in Rome. All quotations in Greek or Latin have been translated by the author. ; Oxford University Press Academic Monograph Reprints; 392 pages
