‎THE POLITICAL BACKGROUND OF AESCHYLEAN TRAGEDY‎

‎Very light shelfwear to book. Light tanning to pages. DJ is price-clipped. DJ has a few tears and chipping with light soiling ; The author examines the seven extant plays of Aeschylus against the political and military background of his time. As one who himself fought at the battle of Salamis, Aeschylus was profoundly concerned with military events (the messenger speech in Persians) and potitical changes (Eumenides). In this volume, Podlecki adopted a 'historicist' approach to tragedy, adding a new dimension to the understanding of Aeschylus' poetry. ; 188 pages‎

‎ANCIENT GREEK WOMEN IN FILM‎

‎This volume examines cinematic representations of ancient Greek women from the realms of myth and history. It discusses how these female figures are resurrected on the big screen by different filmmakers during different historical moments, and are therefore embedded within a narrative which serves various purposes, depending on the director of the film, its screenwriters, the studio, the country of its origin, and the sociopolitical context at the time of its production. Using a diverse array of hermeneutic approaches (such as gender theory, feminist criticism, psychoanalysis, viewer-response theory, and personal voice criticism) , the essays aim to cast light on cinema's investments in the classical past and decode the mechanisms whereby the women under examination are extracted from their original context and are brought to life to serve as vehicles for the articulation of modern ideas, concerns, and cultural trends. The volume thus aims to investigate not only how antiquity on the screen depicts, and in this process distorts, compresses, contests, and revises, antiquity on the page but also, more crucially, why the medium follows such eclectic representational strategies vis-a-vis the classical world. ; Classical Presences; 400 pages‎

‎SOPHOCLES An Interpretation‎

‎Spine a little creased. Light shelfwear. Tiny chip to top edge of front wrap. Scholar's blindstamp to half-title. ; 0.94 x 8.82 x 5.91 Inches; 358 pages; In this interpretation of the seven extant tragedies of Sophocles, Professor Winnington-Ingram provides not so much a straightforward account of Sophocles as an exploration of his tragic vision of the world. The Sophoclean hero lies at the centre of this vision. Taking the plays individually but without losing sight of the single consistent mind behind them, the author faces the questions of how the hero is to be regarded, what we are to make of the fates he suffered and the divine powers who controlled those fates. He proceeds by a detailed study of what Sophocles wrote, by close attention to form and recurrent themes, and especially by close analysis of a number of choral odes. Students of Greek drama will find that this detailed study provides invaluable insights into the meaning of the tragedies. Greek in the text is translated or paraphrased, so that the book will also be of interest to students of the literature and drama of other cultures.‎

‎ANCIENT OLYMPIC GAMES AND COINAGE Archaioi Olumpiakoi Agones Kai Nomisma‎

‎Bilingual Edition (Greek/English). The lecture entitled "Ancient Olympic Games and Coinage" was given in 2004 on the occasion of the return of the Olympic Games to Greece. Now published, it provides an interesting record of this sacred institution as well as of the ancient site of Olympia. In parallel with the testimony provided by excavations, literary sources and inscriptions, the coins of Elis, ranked among the most beautiful of the ancient world, provide valuable information on this supreme institution. The coinage of Elis, the city that used to host the Olympic Games, in tandem with the coins of other minting authorities featuring illustrations of the Games, provide a wider understanding of the religious, economic, political and artistic dimensions of the ancient Olympic Games. ; Lectures on the History of Coinage- 5; 108 pages‎

‎COINAGE AS EVIDENCE FOR THE CHANGING PROSPERITY OF CYPRUS IN BYZANTINE AND MEDIEVAL TIMES With Two Introductory Notes on James R. Stewart and the Stavrokonnou Hoard by R. S. Merilles and D. M. Metcalf‎

‎Very faint bump to top of spine else fine. ; Stapled booklet. Metcalf examines how coinage can provide evidence for the study of the changing prosperity of Medieval Cyprus. Following an overview of his subject, the author focuses on two examples: the first concerns the effects on monetary economy caused by the loss of Famagusta to the Genoese in 1371. The second explores the effect of the Arab raids on the coinage of Cyprus during the second half of the seventh century. Both examples shed light on the methods required for establishing the relation between Coinage and History. The first half of the publication makes reference to James R. Stewart and the Stavrokonnos hoard. The presentation is completed by two annexes. ; Lectures on the History of Coinage- 4; 42 pages‎

‎HOMER AND THE INDO-EUROPEANS Comparing Mythologies‎

‎Former owner's name in pencil and blindstamp to ffep. Else very minor shelfwear to book and DJ. ; This study in comparative mythology interprets the Greek myths in the light of the mythologies of other Indo-European cultures - Indian, Celtic, Scandinavian, Roman, Greek, Iranian and Ossetian. The author uses a modified version of the schema proposed by the French theorist Dumezil to consider the profound connections between such works as the "Iliad", the "Odyssey", the Indian epics - the "Ramayana" and the "Mahabharata" - the Iranian "Book of Kings" and the Scandinavian "Yaglingasaga". The book includes a long critical exposition of the discipline of comparative mythology from its 18th-century origins to the revival of the discipline by Dumezil and his followers from 1938 to the present. It also reassesses the profound critique of Dumezil which linked him with Nazi ideology. ; 256 pages‎
