THE FAMILY IN CLASSICAL GREECE
Appears to have been ex-library copy with markings mostly removed. Traces of circulation page to ffep. Slight damage to inner cover from removed library markings. Former owner's name and place of purchase on ffep. Spine is discolored where numbers were removed. ; Aspects of Greek and Roman Life; 342 pages; In this well-researched and coherent introduction to family life in classical Greece, Mr Lacey explains the structure of the family, the social and economic pressures that affected it, and the complicated legal measures that were devised to regulate and protect it. Even though the family has always been a fundamental institution in Greek society, this is the first study in English devoted to it. This book deals in detail with the family in the archaic and classical ages -- the great era of the city-states. It was during this period that a close and complex relationship existed between the family and the city-state. Each city-state was, in fact, the sum total of the households contained in it, and each household resembled a miniature kingdom, with its own gods and lands, and the head of the house exercised almost royal powers over his children. So powerful and close-knit was the family group that it was regarded by politicians and philosophers, including Plato and Aristotle, as damaging to their ideals of personal detachment and public service, and even as a menace to the unity of the state. Mr Lacey supports his views of family life by quoting and discussing relevant writings of the Greek philosophers and by citing contemporary literature, especially the comedies. He analyzes also the valuable evidence supplied by inscriptions, vase paintings, sculpture, terracottas, and coins, many of which are presented in black-and-white photographs. From ancient times until today, the most pervasive force in Greek life has been the family. This study of its influence in classical Greece makes possible a better understanding of greek history, literature, and art.

THE GREEK WORLD OF APULEIUS Apuleius and the Second Sophistic
Gift inscription to ffep from author to Bryan [Reardon]: "to Bryan with warmest regards, Gerry". Very light bumping to bottom corners of book and top of spine. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 276 pages; The first three chapters of this book elucidate the scholastic goals of both classical cultures during the Roman Imperial period. Apuleius' works share the stage in these chapters with representatives of the second-century Greek cultural paradigm. They define patterns of discourse and fit selected examples of analogous Apuleian strategies into the broader cultural framework. Subsequent chapters focus closely on the complete Apuleian corpus under the general headings of Apuleius in the roles of orator, philosopher and novelist. Two of Apuleius' philosophical works and his novel the Golden Ass provide an unparalleled opportunity to analyze the methods of translation and adaptation employed by the major Latin writer of the second half of the second century. ; Signed by Author

Fantham, Elaine
LATIN POETS AND ITALIAN GODS
Large closed tear to back panel of DJ (8cm). Now protected in mylar sleeve. Bottom corners slightly bumped. ; The Robson Classical Lectures; 256 pages; Based on Elaine Fantham's 2004 Robson lectures, Latin Poets and Italian Gods reconstructs the response of Roman poets in the late republic and Augustan age to the rural cults of central Italy. Study of Roman gods is often limited to the grand equivalents of the Olympian Greek deities such as Jupiter, Mars, and Juno. However, real-life Italians gave a lot of their affection and loyalty to humbler gods with no Greek equivalent: local nymphs who supplied healing waters, the great Tiber river and other lesser rivers, the lusty garden god Priapus, and more. Latin Poets and Italian Gods surveys the representation of these old country gods in poets from Plautus to Statius. Fantham offers historical and epigraphic evidence of worship offered to these colourful lesser spirits and reveals the emotional importance of local Italian deities to the sophisticated poets of the Augustan age.
