Rowleys verdienstvolles Buch gibt eine bis ins einzelne gehende Einführung in die Entstehung der Apokalypsen, ihre literarische Gattung und ihre Inhalte. Von den jüdisch-apokalyptischen Schriften bis hin zu den großartigen Zeugnissen der Apokalyptik nach Christus spannt sich der Bogen der Untersuchung. Es werden also die apokalyptischen Schriften des AT und NT wie die Fülle der apokryphen und pseudepigraphen Schriften durchleuchtet und miteinander verglichen. Für das Verständnis der christlichen Botschaft ist die Kenntnis der Apokalyptik eine unerläßliche Voraussetzung. Was ist aber nun von ihnen als Zukunftsprognose zu halten? Rowley stellt dar, warum diese großartigen Dokumente des Glaubens nicht geeignet sind, sektiererischen Gemeinschaften zur einseitigen Auslegung zu dienen. Aber ebenso falsch wäre es, die Visionen eines apokalyptischen Weltendes als Utopie zu verwerfen. Die bleibende Botschaft der Apokalyptik hat im Lichte der christlichen Lehre die Aufgabe, die Parusie zu verkünden, also die Wiederkunft Christi und den endgültigen Sieg des Reiches Gottes, zu einem dem Menschen nicht bestimmbaren Zeitpunkt.‎
