‎TAMIL FOLKTALES - MAHABHARATA - RAMAYANA.‎

‎Two Tamil folktales: The story of King Matanakâma - The story of peacock Râvana. Translated from the Tamil by Kamil V. Zvelebil.‎

‎Very Good Very Good English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. [Lvii], 236 p. Two Tamil folktales: The story of King Matanakâma - The story of peacock Râvana. Translated from the Tamil by Kamil V. Zvelebil. "Taamil literary folklore has so far received little attention, in spite of a few early publications which appeared mostly in the 19th century. Mosst of Tamil literary texts translated into Western languages, or analyzed in Indological literature, belonged too the Tamil 'Great Tradition' of high literary culture. And yet, there exists an enormous wealth of oral and semi-oral traditions of verbal art in Tamil, as in any other Indian language; some of these pieces of literary folklore have appeared in print as chapbooks and are very popular with Tamil readers, but ignored by 'respactable' literary scholarship. The two folk-narratives translated in this book belong to the favourite pieces of Tamil folklore. Apart from being expressions of sheer narrative joy and creative fantasy of the Tamil people, they are a rich source of comparative data on various motifs, customs, stylistic devices etc., and therefore they will not only amuse and delight the general reader, but be of great use to all students of Indian literatures, and of comparative folklore.".‎

‎NASIR-I KHUSRAW, (1004-1088).‎

‎Forty poems from the Divan. Translated with introductions and notes by Peter Lamborn Wilson & Gholam Reza Aavani. Edited by Seyyed Hossein Nasr (Series on Ismaili Thought).‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [x], 144 p. Forty poems from the Divan. Translated with introductions and notes by Peter Lamborn Wilson & Gholam Reza Aavani. Edited by Seyyed Hossein Nasr (Series on Ismaili Thought)."The Diwan, or Divan, is a collection of poems written and compiled by Nasir Khusraw (1004-1088 AD). Khusraw composed most of his poems in the Valley of Yumgan, a remote mountainous region in Badakhshan (in present-day Afghanistan). The Divan contains around 11,000 verses of Khusraw's own poetry, reflecting philosophical, religious, and personal themes. The majority of poems contained in the Diwan are odes composed in the traditional Persian qasida (a structured form of poetry with an elaborate metre). The qasida consists of a single rhyme carried throughout the entirety of the poem. In terms of rhythm, each line (bayt) of the qasida consists of two equal parts. The Divan also contains quatrains and shorter poems (as qasidas can be relatively long). Khusraw, in his Divan, employs sophisticated rhetorical and poetic devices characteristic of Persian poetry...". (Source: Wikipedia).‎

‎FARID AL-DIN ATTAR (Abû Hamîd bin Abû Bakr Ibrâhîm - Attar of Nishapur), (1145-1221).‎

‎Guzide-e asrâr-nâmâ.‎

‎New Persian Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Persian. [14], 184 p. Guzide-e asrâr-nâmâ. Attar was a twelfth-century Persian poet, theoretician of Sufism, and hagiographer from Nishapur who had an immense and lasting influence on Persian poetry and Sufism. Man?iq-u?-?ayr [The Conference of the Birds] and Ilahi-Nama [The Book of Divine] are among his most famous works. "Asrar-nama" is the earliest of Attar's mystical narrative poems ; it has attracted less scholarly attention than the other three. This may be partly due to its lack of a frame-story. The contents are arranged in 22 discourses (maqalas) in random order, without regard to sequence of ideas. Each maqala begins with an outline of an idea, which is then developed by means of short anecdotes. Frequently the anecdotes are accompanied by reflections which lead into thematically related fields or, in some cases, stray quite far from the basic idea. The work thus lacks a definite conceptual structure. Its concluding message is the hope of release of man's spiritual substance from the world's grasp. In no other work does ?A??ar propound the gnostic concept of the soul's fall and the duty to free it from worldly and material bonds so comprehensively and forcefully as in the Asrar-nama. The resultant belief that this work influenced the preamble of the Ma?nawi-e ma'nawi, probably gave rise to the legend that the aged ?A??ar donated it to the young Jalal-al-din Rumi as his testament. The concluding message naturally leads the author into moralizing reflections of the world's transience, vanity, and depravity, which fill whole chapters in the last third of the work (chap. 14 onward). After the three introductory chapters on taw?id, na't, and manaqeb, the fundamentals of the gnostic concept are expounded; certain aspects are elaborated in chapters 8 and 11, and in chapter 5 the favorite theme of reason and love (aql o esq) is introduced. Chapter 12 also seems worthy of special mention, because it is about the impenetrability of celestial and extramundane secrets (asrar) and is thus more pertinent to the book's title than the rest. ‎Tarih, Dil, Cografya Fakültesinde Günes-Dil teorisine göre toponomik tetkikler. Ikinci kitap.‎

‎Very Good Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 148 p. Tarih, Dil, Cografya Fakültesinde Günes-Dil teorisine göre toponomik tetkikler. Ikinci kitap. First and Only Edition. The Sun Language Theory was a Turkish nationalist linguistic pseudoscientific hypothesis developed in Turkey in the 1930s that proposed that all human languages are descendants of one proto-Turkic primal language. The theory proposed that because this primal language had close phonemic resemblances to Turkish, all other languages can essentially be traced back to Turkic roots. According to the theory, the Central Asian worshippers, who wanted to salute the omnipotence of the sun and its life-giving qualities, had done so by transforming their meaningless blabbering into a coherent set of ritual utterings, and language was born, hence the name. This book is one of early printed in the Republican period and includes toponomic investigations in its period made in Ankara University History, Language and Geography Faculty. Tankut's claim in that study was peoples like Trojans and Sumerians are in Turkish / Turkic origins according to his comparative linguistic toponyms and etymological inferences. Rare.‎

‎Eski Türk yazitlari. 4 volumes set.‎

‎Very Good Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 4 volumes set: (192p.; 218 p.; 320 p.; [xxii], 210 p.). Eski Türk yazitlari. 4 volumes set. (Kül Tegin - Bilge Han - Tonyukuk - Ongin - Ihe Hüsotü - Iki Uygur yaziti). This work brings together all the Paleo-Turkish inscriptions and all the known writings in so-called 'runiform' (runic) characters, in particular the inscriptions of Mongolia (including those of the Orkhon) and of Siberia (including those of the Yenisey). Illustrated with numerous photographs or lithographs of the texts, provided with numerous annotations, it reproduces, for the essentials, the interpretations and translations of Thomsen, Radloff, Ramstedt, Samoilovitch, Le Coq, and Maloff, while quite often adding hypotheses specific to the editor and which were generally suggested to him by reading Kasgari. The difficult problems concerning the ancient inscriptions are far from being all elucidated: This edition, as useful as it is, cannot therefore be considered as definitive, and it will take a long time before "the eternal stone" has give all his secrets. The fact remains that by publishing reproductions of almost all the texts and by collecting the documentation of the best publications, the editor has done great service to Paleo-Turkish epigraphic studies. Despite its imperfections, the glossary that constitutes fourth volume is very useful. First Edition. Rare.‎

Avesta grammar and reader: An Avesta grammar in comparison with Sanskrit.= Dastûr-i zabân va guzîdah-'i mutûn-e Avistâyî [REPRINT of 1892 EDITION]. Jackson was born in New York City on February 9, 1862. He graduated from Columbia University in 1883. He was a fellow in letters there from 1883 to 1886, and an instructor in Anglo-Saxon and the Iranian languages from 1887 to 1890. After study at the University of Halle from 1887 to 1889 he became an adjunct professor of English language and literature. In 1895, he was appointed public lecturer and also appointed to the newly founded professorship of Indo-Iranian languages at Columbia University, where he remained until 1935. He was well known as a lecturer on English literature and the Orient. In 1901, during a visit to India and Ceylon, he received special attention from the Parsees, who presented to Columbia a valuable collection of Zoroastrian manuscripts in recognition of the instruction there given by him in their ancient texts. In 1903 he made a second journey to the Orient, this time visiting Iran. He also visited Central Asia sometime before 1918. Jackson's grammar of Avestan, the language used in the Zoroastrian scriptures, is still considered to be the seminal work on the topic. Jackson was one of the directors of the American Oriental Society.‎

His proceeding entitled 'Osmanlica'nin inkisafinda içtimâî faktörler' [i.e. Social factors in the development of Ottoman Turkish]. German Turkologist; educated in Switzerland; member of the Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands (KPD); traveled widely in Turkey together with the Austrian Turkologist and fellow party member Andreas Tietze; settled in Turkey in 1939; after the Second World War director of the German cultural institute, later Goethe Institute (1961-68), in Istanbul and lastly of the Goethe Institute in Amsterdam. Anhegger was born in Vienna in 1911, the son of a German trader. After World War I (much of which he spent in Switzerland), Anhegger moved with his parents to Rotterdam. In 1923 the family moved to Zürich. In Zürich, Anhegger started to read Law, History and Literature at the university, before moving to Vienna in 1932. There he continued his studies, this time reading Economic History, Slavonic studies and Islamic studies. He also started to learn Turkish. It was during his studies in Vienna that he befriended Andreas Tietze. They not only shared scholarly interests, but also a passion for left-wing politics. Anhegger made his first trip to Turkey in 1935. In 1939 he received his Ph.D. degree at the University of Zürich and in 1940 he moved (and as it turned out emigrated) to Istanbul. He had several motives for doing so: quite apart from his scholarly interest in Turkey, his background in the Communist movement and the fact that he shared his life with a Jewish woman, made him feel unsafe so close to Germany. In Istanbul he worked at the German Archeological Institute until he was dismissed in 1942 for refusing to join up when called to serve in the German army. After his dismissal he worked as a teacher of German language and literature in a number of places, notably Istanbul University. As a German with intimate knowledge of Turkey, who was untainted by any Nazi connections, Anhegger from the early fifties onwards became the lynchpin of German cultural activities in Istanbul, culminating in his directorship of the Goethe Institute after 1961. In 1958 Anhegger married the Turkish architect Muallâ Eyüboglu, the sister of the painter Bedri Rahmi. His connections with modern Turkish painters led him to found the first private art gallery in Istanbul in 1957. Robert and Muallâ Anhegger now live partly in Istanbul, partly in Amsterdam.‎

‎PEYAMI SAFA, (Turkish author), (1899-1961).‎

‎Autograph document signed 'Peyami Safa'.‎

‎Very Good French Original autograph manuscript document signed 'Peyami Safa'. Oblong: 15x23 cm. In French. 1 p. It's resume of a paper written for the "XVeme Congress International de Sociologie, Istanbul, 11-17 Septembre 1952" related to 'Ibn-Khaldoun' and 'Auguste Comte'. Safa was a Turkish journalist, columnist and novelist. He was born in 1899 to writer and poet Ismail Safa (1867-1901) in Istanbul, Ottoman Empire. While he was only two years old, his father died in exile in Sivas. During his youth years until the age of seventeen, he lived in psychic and physical depression due a bone sickness he suffered from at the age of eight or nine. He rejected his doctors' advice to amputate his arm. Safa described his experiences in hospitals in his novel Dokuzuncu Hariciye Kogusu, which was filmed in 1967. In 1911, Peyami Safa had to give up his education at Vefa High School, and began working in a printing house and later in the Ministry of Post. He taught himself French, and in 1918 together with his elder brother began publishing a newspaper. In later years, he published three literary periodicals. He also wrote in various newspapers sometimes as a columnist, and sometimes as a novelist. Most of his novels were created before 1940. In these novels, he stressed on the west-east conflict in the Turkish society during the early years of the Turkish Republic. His novel Dokuzuncu Hariciye Kogusu gained much interest. In 1931, he wrote his only historical novel about Attila the Hun. Besides these novels, he wrote many serial stories and novels in newspapers, among them in Cumhuriyet and Milliyet, under the pseudonym "Server Bedii". Some of these are about a gentleman thief named Cingöz Recai.‎

‎Krisdosçin siyreti [BOOK in TURKISH WITH ARMENIAN LETTERS].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original decorative black cloth bdg. 12mo. (17,5 x 11,5 cm). In Turkish with Armenian letters. 206 p. "Armenian letters used by Ottoman Armenians and Gregorian Kipchaks have differences in terms of spelling and writing style. Also in terms of word existence, borrowed words from the Slavic language in Gregorian Kipchak Turkish are more. Arabic and Persian words, on the other hand, are partly seen in some works. However, Armenian words are very limited. It is seen that a differentiating language according to the region and quality of the work is used in the works by Armenians under Ottoman rule. In such works, there are Arabic and Persian words along with the Anatolian accents. Writing Turkish texts with Armenian letters is come across in manuscripts after the 14th century and in pressed works after the 18th century. Armenian books started to be pressed in printing houses after the beginning of the 16th century. The first Turkish book with Armenian letters was pressed in Venice in 1876 by Sivasli Mikhitar, the founder of the Union of Mikhitarists. The number of the pressed books is quite a lot. Works written in Armenian Turkish and letters in Ottoman lands are generally categorized into five groups. These are the works of Armenian poet-singers (asug), written literary works, translations, newspapers, journals, and epitaphs. It is possible to classify this classification with a more general approach by also including Kipchak areas as such: literary works (it is possible to consider this as oral and written works), dictionaries, and works on language, translations, legal documents, historical works, and periodicals.". The author grew up in the small community of Zoroastrians still surviving in India, and had a deep and abiding love for his religion. He was a man of liberal outlook and wide learning, with a full mastery of the ancient languages. He became one of the greatest scholars of Zoroastrianism in our time. The rare combination of a true believer and a profound scholar gives this book simple beauty and great depth.].‎

‎[EXERCISES ON ARMENIAN LANGUAGE FOR THE OTTOMAN LEARNERS] Talîm-i lisân-i Ermeni.‎

‎Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Modern very decorated full leather bdg. Tear and missing on imprint page; also first two pages, however only two words are missing, slightly toned on pages. Foolscap 8vo. (17,5 x 11,5 cm). In Ottoman script and Armenian. [8], 94 p. Talîm-i lisân-i Ermeni. The Tanzimat reforms from 1839 stimulated Armenian cultural activity in Constantinople and the port city of Smyrna (now, Izmir). The number of Armenian titles printed in the Ottoman capital grew exponentially throughout the next few decades. By the mid-nineteenth century Constantinople had regained its status as "the World Capital of the Armenian Book" for a new span of 40 years. Thereafter, the fortunes of Armenian book publishing in Constantinople became hostage to political developments in the Ottoman Empire. Armenian printing stagnated during the repressive regime of Sultan Abdülhamid II, but rebounded immediately after the 1908 Revolution. It almost ground to a halt during the First World War, yet it was rejuvenated immediately after the Ottoman defeat. After Constantinople (renamed Istanbul in 1930) was integrated into the Turkish Republic established by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Armenian cultural freedoms were curtailed, the total number of Armenian books published declined, although the city still remains an important center of Armenian-language book printing outside Armenia. This is a small and extremely rare Armenian linguistic book printed for the Ottoman / Turkish learners. OCLC: 1004312309 / 780182928.; Özege 19657. First and Only Edition.‎
