‎"BOPP, FRANZ.‎

‎Vocalismus oder sprachvergleichende Kritiken über J. Grimm's deutsche Grammatik und Graff's althochdeutschen Sprachschatz mit Begründung einer neuen Theorie des Ablauts.‎

‎Berlin, Nicolaischen Buchhandlung, 1836. 8vo. Bound in a nice contemporary half calf with gilt spine. Gilt title label to spine. Minor wear to lower back hinge. Tear to marbled paper of lower front board. Library stamps to pasted down front endpaper, verso of title-page, and last leaf. A few scattered brownspots, otherwise internally clean. X,253 pp. + errata.‎

‎The first edition of Bopp's Vocalismus in which he sums up his critical thoughts and previously published articles on J. Grimm and Graff.""It seems to me only an expression of the natural common feeling which binds us together as a Philological Society, to take some notice of the death of one of the greatest philologists of our time, without whose life and labours, indeed, the Science of Language might not have been, or at least might not have elevated itself so high as to deserve that title, so soon or so indisputably... Bopp must, more or less, directly or indirectly, be the teacher of all who at the present day study, not this language or that language, but Language itself..."" (Russel Martineau, in: Portraits of Linguists. A Biographical Source Book for the History of Western Linguistics 1746-1963).During the time before Bopp, the languages of the antiquity, Greek, Latin and Hebrew, had provided the key for unlocking many of the mysteries of the modern languages of Europe and Western Asia. But the languages of the East that had been preserved in a larger sense were only beginning to be known"" Bopp saw, as one of the first that these languages might be of even greater importance. Sanskrit, Bopp realized, was the language that might provide the general light that should be thrown on formative process of language, and together with the other known languages that had been investigated, Greek, Latin, Persian, and the Germanic languages, Sanskrit would be able to provide us with the final unity in the variety that are present in the Western languages. And thus, Bopp decided to go to Paris to study Sanskrit (Paris was the only place it could be done) in 1812. Bopp studied Sanskrit here for five years, and in fact, he was among the first pupils to study under Chézy, the holder of the very first chair of Sanskrit (1815), together with Wilhelm von Humboldt and A.W. Schlegel. It is thus during his studies here that he writes his first work, which turned out to be a work of breakthrough. ""Following up the discovery of Sir William Jones (235) of the kinship of the Indo-European languages, and building upon the recognition by Rask (266) of the phonetic agreements of the Germanic language group, Bopp in this, his first publication, proved the exact correspondence of the construction of the verb in five main branches of Indo-European languages. He thereby established the science of comparative linguistics..."" (PMM 275).His first publication was regarded as being a very important contribution to the science of linguistics, and it secured him the chair of Oriental Languages at the university of Berlin (1821-64).Bopp wrote and published very little, but that which he did publish has remained of the utmost importance to the development of the science of comparative linguistics. With his idea of tracing the common origin of the grammatical form of the five languages, a task that no one had attempted before him, and by analysing those forms, Bopp became the provider of the first dependable materials for a history of the languages compared.""Bopp's importance lies in the fact that he was no mere grammarian but considered comparative philology to be an essential part of the history of civilization: out of their vocabulary he drew an accurate picture of the material and intellectual life of the earliest Indo-European people."" (PMM 275).‎

‎Göttingen, Johann Albrecht Barmeier, 1768. 8vo. 2 volumes bound in one modest marbled paper covered cardboard binding. Wear to extremities, internally fine and clean. 112 118 pp.‎

‎First edition of Michaelis work on the Syriac language. Johann Davis Michaelis (1717-19) was a theologian and orientalist, whose fame today rests upon the present work and upon the fact that he was responsible for the first scientific expedition to Arabia Felix, namely that of Niebuhr. As a theologian and an orientalist, many of Michaelis' questions have root in the Bible. But unlike many other theolgians of the time, Michaelis sought to shed light over biblical themes through sources outside of the Bible - especially from the Middle East, not least Arabia.‎

‎"E. L. SUKENIK.‎

‎Megilloth Genuzoth. (i.e. ""Scrolls hidden away"", preliminary survey on 'Dead Sea Scrolls'). - [FIRST PUBLISHED STUDY ON THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS.]‎

‎Jerusalem, Bialik Foundation. 1948. Large 4to (325 x 235 mm). In the original printed wrappers. Extremities with light marginal miscolouring and a bit creased. Verso of wrappers with offsetting, otherwise a fine copy. (6), 43 pp. + 13 plates.‎

‎The very first publication of any part of the Dead Sea Scroll. With the present publication, Sukenik also became the first to linking the scrolls and their content to a community of Essenes, which became the standard interpretation of the origin of the scrolls, a theory that is still the general consensus among scholars. The Dead Sea Scrolls are regarded as a pivotal cornerstone in the realm of archaeology, possessing immense historical, religious, and linguistic importance. These scrolls comprise the most ancient extant manuscripts of complete books that would eventually find their place in the biblical canons. Additionally, they house deuterocanonical and extra-biblical manuscripts, providing valuable testimony to the multiplicity of religious ideologies during the period of late Second Temple Judaism. Sukenik's role was significant in acquiring and studying some of the Dead Sea Scrolls after their initial discovery. In 1948, he managed to acquire three of the scrolls from an antiquities dealer in Bethlehem, including the famous ""Isaiah Scroll."" (the two others being The War Scroll and the Thanksgiving Scroll (Hodayot)). Sukenik almost immediately recognized the historical and scholarly importance of the scrolls and worked to secure them for research purposes. His efforts helped bring attention to the scrolls and contributed to their preservation and study. Sukenik recollected in his diary:""My hands shook as I started to unwrap one of them. I read a few sentences. It was written in beautiful biblical Hebrew. The language was like that of the Psalms, but the text was unknown to me. I looked and looked, and I suddenly had the feeling that I was privileged by destiny to gaze upon a Hebrew Scroll which had not been read for more than 2,000 years."" Eleazar Sukenik, along with Roland de Vaux, emerged as among the earliest scholars engaged in the study of the initial scrolls unearthed in 1947. Sukenik swiftly established a connection between these scrolls and the settlement at Qumran, positioned on the northwest bank of the Dead Sea, specifically attributing them to a Jewish sect identified as the Essenes. In 1951, de Vaux conducted excavations at the Qumran site, unearthing pottery that bore an identical resemblance to the pottery discovered in nearby Cave 1 (the scrolls had been extracted from a sequence of 11 caves, each numbered by archaeologists based on their order of discovery). This further solidified Sukenik's correlation between the caves, their contents, and the adjacent archaeological remains of the Qumran settlement. The Qumran-Essene hypothesis put forth by these prominent figures in archaeology subsequently became the prevailing theory, endorsed in scholarly publications and reference works. While a group of experts commenced the task of translating the scrolls in the 1950s, the wider academic community had to wait nearly four decades before gaining access to them.‎

The Dutch philologist Etienne Morin (1624–1700) utilizes the Augustinian thesis in his discussion of the primeval language: ""Quoting from Augustine (City of God xvi. 5 and 10), he maintains that the world always ought to be divided into two antithetical communities. Of these two, the patriarchs Shem and Heber belonged to the city of God, while the crowd of rebels who conspired at Babel embodied the city of man. Morin concludes that this proves that Shem could not possibly have taken part in the conspiracy at Babel. Augustine could not have put forward a better argument, he says. As the constant companion of true religion, the original language was preserved in the family and among the pious descendants of Heber who transmitted it as a legacy to those practising piety."" (Eskhult, Augustine and the Primeval Language in Early Modern Exegesis and Philology).‎

‎Later editions of Michaelis highly popular grammars on Hebrew and Aramaic. Johann Davis Michaelis (1717-19) was a theologian and orientalist, whose fame today rests upon the fact that he was responsible for the first scientific expedition to Arabia Felix, namely that of Niebuhr. In 1753, he had come up with the idea for the the Royal Danish Arabia Expedition (1761-1767) and had gotten the Danish minister Bernstoff to agree to it. In 1760, when the expedition was becoming a reality, Michaelis recommended Niebuhr as a participant, and he outlined the entire purpose of the trip - namaly the list of 100 questions that he prepared and published for the members of the expedition, in order for them to answer in the course of the voyage. For all intents and purposes, Michaelis was the spiritual father of the Arabia-expedition. As a theologian and an orientalist, many of Michaelis' questions have root in the Bible. But unlike many other theolgians of the time, Michaelis sought to shed light over biblical themes through sources outside of the Bible - especially from the Middle East, not least Arabia. In this regard, his 100 Questions also came to be a precursor to the emergence of modern bible science.‎
