‎Romola‎

‎New York: Grosset & Dunlap n.y. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Green cloth with black lettering pictorial dust jacket. vii 550pp 2pp ads. Frontispiece 7 full-page illustrations. Very good/fair. Faintest of binding edgewear with endpapers mildly age toned from jacket contact; jacket edgeworn and edge chipped mainly along spine but complete and overall fairly attractive. A tight attractive photoplay edition touts front jacket panel "Illustrated with scenes from the Photoplay Produced by Inspiration Pictures Inc. Charles H. Duell Jr. President" featuring scenes from the 1924 Henry King silent film version starring the Gish sisters Ronald Coleman and William Powell -- and fetching jacket front panel art a provocative portrait of Lillian Gish. Best of all the front flyleaf bears a lovely autograph addition: A 2 3/4" X 2" heavy stock card is tipped in bearing a bold "In remembrance -- / Lillian Gish" in black fineline. Gish 1896-1993 was nicknamed "The First Lady of the Silent Screen" and her vast number of films ranged from silent classics such as "Birth of a Nation" 1915 to made-for-television dramas such as "The Whales of August" 1987. ‎Eliza Cook (1818-1889), English poet and Chartist, close friend of the American writer Charlotte Cushman:‎

‎Eliza Cook. poet Autograph Letter Signed from the poet Eliza Cook sending what she describes as a 'specimen' of her 'pothooks' and hangers': a holograph poem titled 'Impromptu on being told the death of my Mother would leave a scar on my heart'.‎

‎9 Gloucester Buildings Old Kent Road London. 11 December 1845. 2pp. 4to. Bifolium. In very good condition on lightly-aged paper with minor evidence of previous mounting. Apparently addressing an autograph hunter she writes: 'I beg to forward you a specimen of my "pothooks and hangers" trusting you will "admire" if you honestly can. Believe I have pleasure in gratifying your request and am with truth my dear Ever yours faithfully Eliza Cook'. The poem also signed 'Eliza Cook' is four lines long titled 'Impromptu on being told the death of my Mother would leave a scar on my heart' beginning 'That stroke indeed would deeply gash'. There is no indication that the poem was published. In her biography of Cushman 'When Romeo Was A Woman' 2000 Lisa Merrill claims that the two women were lovers. ‎Lesbian Modernism: Censorship Sexuality and Genre Fiction Edinburgh Critical Studies in Modernist Culture‎

‎Edinburgh University Press 2014. New/New.
Author: Elizabeth English

Publisher: Edinburgh University Press

ISBN: 9780748693733

Release Date: 2014

Languages: English

Binding: Hardcover

Number Of Pages: 224

Details: From the Back Cover AUTHOR APPROVEDLesbian Modernism pits highbrow modernist experimentation against popular genre fiction to offer fresh perspectives on the literary representation of Sapphic love and desire. Conceptually ambitious and deeply researched this study exposes the ways some women writers evaded the censor by exploiting the fissures of the literary marketplace.Laura Doan author of Disturbing Practices: History Sexuality and Women’s Experience of Modern WarThe first book-length study to explore the importance of genre fiction for the body of literature we call lesbian modernismElizabeth English explores the aesthetic dilemma prompted by the censorship of Radclyffe Hall’s novel The Well of Loneliness in 1928. Faced with legal and financial reprisals women writers were forced to question how they might represent lesbian identity and desire. Modernist experimentation has often been seen as a response to this problem but English breaks new ground by arguing that popular genre fictions offered a creative strategy against the threat of detection and punishment. Her study examines a range of responses to this dilemma by offering illuminating close readings of fantasy crime and historical fictions written by both mainstream and modernist authors.
