A satirical review of an imaginary exhibition by real artists at the Royal Academy dedicated to Joshua Reynolds a founder and the first president of the Academy. The anonymous author makes fun of the pretentions of the Academy and its guidelines in choosing members. In the preface Petit Mot Pour Rire "a small joke" Academy founder Johann Zoffany is subject to a particularly unfriendly tale of how he acquired his fame. This is followed by the review of the fictitious paintings with prefatory remarks on the "revolution of taste in the Polite Arts" "the love of novelty is particularly remarkable . . ." and an addenda with an assessment of the new quarters of the Royal Academy at New Somerset House where it moved in 1780. The author apparently was not a member of the Academy.

London: Printed for G. Kearsly, 1781 unknown books

OCLC records about 16 copies of the two issues combined; not found in Block or Garside Raven & Schöwerling. An uncommon and unusual novel written in the form of a memoir of seven days that two men the narrator and his guide Mr. Grey spend roaming the streets of London in search of answers about the morality and sanity of the world. They report on Londoners from all walks of life in their visits to banks the Stock Exchange coffee-houses Covent Garden St. James's "on a court-day" an auction house the Scientific Institute the British Museum and a "chapel for frail females" among many other places. The narrator and Mr. Grey discuss a multitude of subjects including fiction religion cruelty to animals and prostitution. And among the many conversations they record is one between a bookseller an author and two reviewers. Each evening they return to their inn to discuss that day's events and their conclusions about the moral madness of the world its follies and vices. The Insane World was apparently sufficiently popular that its author Thomas Williams 1755-1839 put his name on the title-page of a reissue in which there are also two pages inserted of excerpts from reviews. Modern bookplate of Mary Kenny on the front free endpaper.

London: Published by J. Hatchard and Williams and Co., 1818 unknown books

1769. A Defense of John Wilkes English Freeholder. The Sentiments of an English Freeholder On the Late Decision of the Middlesex Election. London: Printed for J. Dodsley 1769. iv 60 pp. Quarto 10-1/2" x 8-1/4". Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet. Moderate toning light soiling to exterior light rubbing to corners of text block faint spots and stains to a few leaves "5" "B" and "By the Rt. Honble Dowdeswell Esq" in contemporary hand to title page. $450. Only edition reprinted in Dublin in 1770. In 1768 John Wilkes the publisher of the controversial paper The North Briton was elected to Parliament by Middlesex. However during his term he was imprisoned for seditious libel and subsequently expelled. While the legitimacy of his sentence was being debated Middlesex attempted to re-elect him several times without success. The Wilkes Cause as it was known was a significant controversy of its day and many prominent figures including Sir William Blackstone weighed in. Among others our pamphlet replies to Blackstone's The Question Stated 1769 pointing out inconsistencies between his endorsement of Wilkes's expulsion and his position in his Commentaries in a defense of Wilkes. This anonymous pamphlet has been attributed to several authors. The annotator of our copy appears to have assigned the authorship to William D. Dowdeswell 1721-1775 a member of Parliament and leader of the Rockingham Whigs who opposed Wilkes's expulsion from Parliament and other legal measures against him. Not in Eller or Laeuchli. English Short-Title Catalogue T47461. unknown
