Tom Jones è considerato il suo capolavoro. Assieme a Daniel Defoe, in primis e a Samuel Richardson, Fielding è considerato uno dei padri fondatori del romanzo realista inglese. Ed è proprio una parodia di Richardson che Fielding nel 1741, fa il suo debutto nel mondo dei romanzi con il suo "An Apology for the Life of Mrs. Shamela Andrews", parodia di "Pamela, o la virtù premiata". Tom Jones è universalemnte considerato come uno dei più grandi romanzi della letteratura inglese. L'opera è allo stesso tempo un romanzo picaresco (vicenda avventurosa, ritmo narrativo rapido ed incalzante) e di formazione dal ritmo sempre incalzante che ricostruisce la vita avventurosa ricca di "disavventure" del giovane protagonista, Tom Jones e della sua amata Sophia Western. Translated to Turkish by Mina Urgan. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, often known simply as Tom Jones, is a comic novel by English playwright and novelist Henry Fielding. It is both a Bildungsroman and a picaresque novel. It was first published on 28 February 1749 in London, and is among the earliest English prose works to be classified as a novel. It is the earliest novel mentioned by W. Somerset Maugham in his 1948 book Great Novelists and Their Novels among the ten best novels of the world. Tom Jones is generally regarded as Fielding's greatest book and as an influential English novel. Urgan was a Turkish academic, translator, author and socialist politician. She translated works of Thomas Malory (c. 1415-1471), Henry Fielding (1707-1754), Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850), Aldous Huxley (1894-1963), Graham Greene (1904-1991), William Golding (1911-1993), John Galsworthy (1867-1933) and Shakespeare (1564-1616) into Turkish. She was honored with the "Golden Book Award" in 1993. On letterhead of the Old Mill House Cambridge. 11 August 1933. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged and worn. He begins by stating that he has of late found the act of writing almost impossible but that when he goes into his garden 'there are various things determined that you should not be forgotten; above all those beautiful white Turks' Cap lilies'. He has not been able to enter his garden and now realises 'that old Charon is in the offing with that low flat boat of his ready to convey me not entirely unwilling to the other side. One has for some time been increasingly interested in the new abode which my old ancestor Jean wrote so well about in his "Combat entre l'Homme et la Mort".' He has all manner of visitors: 'I think I have been able to get at them because all through life I have seldom had any axe to grind and have been interested in things. . My three years on the Marchesa between 1882 and 1884 made me hungry for someone who wd recognise even a simple allusion - and I was desperately hard at work too.' He ends in elegiac tone: 'The thermometer has sunk & leaves me happier: soon I suppose I shall be putting a match to the fire in my grate. A wonderful place England. But I am thankful to be alive & fairly well in it & to be able to say that I always have delightful memories of our talks and hopes that they have not finished. I must get old Charon to wait a bit - stand him a drink at the "Pipe & Eel"'. He signs off 'Unchangeably yours Henry Guillemard'. Henry Hallam historian responds indignantly to Dr Thomas Arnold's claim that he has made 'false quotations'. Autograph Letter Signed 'Henry Hallam' to Dr Thomas Arnold defending himself against an allegation made in a lecture at Oxford.
24 Wilton Crescent London. 28 February 1842. 4pp. 4to. Bifolium with mourning border. In fair condition lightly aged with short closed tears at edges of some folds. An excellent letter indignantly countering what must be the most serious accusation one historian can level against another that of making 'false quotations'. The recipient is not named but from the context is undoubtedly the Headmaster of Rugby School Thomas Arnold who since the previous year had held the Regius Professorship of History at Oxford and would die four months later on 12 June 1842. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir You will not I am certain consider it as a liberty if I address you a few lines on the subject of an allusion last word underlined to a passage in my History of the Middle Ages which I understand you to have made in a recent lecture at Oxford. The great respect which I bear to you will be a sufficient excuse; for in an ordinary case I should have waited for publication of the lecture & made my observations then or not as I might have thought it expedient'. He does not have 'an exact knowledge of what you said concerning me' but assures Arnold of the 'very great annoyance' he felt when 'Dr Buckland i.e. the geologist and cleric William Buckland 1784-1856 some weeks since told me in his jocular language “Dr Arnold has been blowing you up for false quotations'. He did not have 'the slightest notion what was the specific charge' but considered it 'a most serious imputation upon any writer' and subsequently 'obtained some information' from 'Dr. B.' 'vague indeed but enough to make me conjecture that your charge related to the well-known passage in Eligius. This has been confirmed since by a letter which a friend of mine received from Oxford; but the words said to have been used by you are very loosely given from memory. It appears however that you spoke in very handsome terms of my general character as a faithful historian'. Arnold has almost certainly overlooked the fact that 'in the fourth edition of my work & in all that followed I have retracted the error into which I had been led so far as it was an error in the fullest manner; not silently correcting or omitting the passage but leaving it as it stood with a note acknowledging it to be highly exaggerated in consequence of the wrong interpretation which through Mosheim's quotation many besides myself had put upon the original writer's meaning. On reading this note again after several years it appears to me that I have gone to the utmost in saying that the passage quoted by Mosheim ought never to be applied again; for in reality it is one of importance & serves to confirm what Mosheim himself has said though Maclaine & those who followed him went much farther than it would warrant.' He discusses a Latin sentence declaring: 'I need not add that this was no false quotation nor even a garbled one on the part of Mosheim who gave an entire - still less on my part who only quoted him & Robertson.' He ends by declaring his expectation that 'when your lectures go to the press you will do me the justice of taking notice' that he has corrected 'the error into which I had been led'. Henry Hawkins English artist. Autograph Letter Signed to William Loney of Macclesfield regarding a ‘successful’ portrait he is painting of ‘Mr Roe’ and upsetting a bottle of varnish over a letter.
No date franked 3 July 1838. 11 Bulstrode Street Manchester Square London. An uncommon signature of a neglected artist. Hawkins was a founding member of the Society of British Artists exhibiting there prolifically from 1824 to 1881. He also showed at the Royal Academy eight times between 1822 and 1849. See Holmes's entry in the Oxford DNB. On 14 cm square piece of watermarked wove paper cut from a frank. The letter is written on the reverse of the cover which is laid out in the customary way: ‘London third July 1838 / Wm. Loney Esq / Macclesfield.’ With red dated postmark and signed in the customary way at bottom left: ‘John Baron’. In fair condition lightly aged with traces of blue paper mount adhering to the cover side. The letter reads: ‘My dear Sir / Our friend James Holmes requested me to preserve a Frank for the inclosed I have done so but have unfortunately upset a bottle of varnish over the letter - which accounts for its being in such a filthy state which I trust you will excuse. - I am truly happy to hear from Roe - that you are well and as happy as can to sic expected - I am painting a portrait of Mr Roe which I think promises to be very successful - I trust you will give me a call when you come to Town / believe me / most truly yours &c / Henry Hawkins’. Henry Kemble actor. Long Autograph Letter Signed to 'Seymour' entirely written in verse giving a humorous account of his activities in provincial theatre.
Theatre Royal Nottingham 21 September 1871. 8pp. 12mo. Text complete on aged and worn paper. A charming and high-spirited description of life in the provincial theatre in Victorian England in better than average verse showing the influence of Byron's humorous poetry. The letter begins: 'Dear Seymour After long delay And putting off from day to day The duty that to you I owe Of writing lines to let you know How fares it with me well or ill Or else of forwarding a bill I'll now atone for my neglect By sending you with all respect The history of myself in verse.' Among his 'woes' are an unpleasant trip from Scarborough to York: 'It pleased the government to send Some half-a-dozen raw recruits With dirty bodies clothes and boots; To join their regiment in Brum. Into our carriage must they come And what with drinking coughing spitting Around the place where I was sitting The filthy wretches made me sick. I longed to give the brutes the stick.' On arrival in 'fair Nottingham' he goes straight to the playhouse 'And went in front for which I had to pay For Musgrave had directed Sir Alas! Without an order none of us should pass.' He reports a speech from his 'future manager': 'Dear Sir I'm glad to see you pray sit down I'm very busy just arrived from town Where I have been to see if I could find A man to play "Claude Frolls" to my mind . But just oblige me and I think you will We'll put your name as Temple in the bill If you'll consent a smaller part to play For Mr. Wills who's very ill to-day'. References follow to 'Miss Brough the leading lady pretty fair Unsympathetic though and given to stare' and to 'Miss Sidney juvenile' who is 'not much good Her heart is soft Sir but her head is wood. Pretty to look at but not over sage Charming in private wretched on the stage.' Also 'the old woman Mrs. Sennett'; the leading man Brandon Ellis; the 'manager of stage affairs' 'Mr. Nelson'; 'Miss Elton' and 'Boffin Palmer'. 'I saw "Notre Dame" in London & must say Our scenery is as good in every way.' He is happy with business and his landlady and asks to be commended to 'all I know in Liverpool'. He asks him to look out for an opening there: 'As an old man Sir whether grave or funny You won't get many better ones for money' In a prose postscript he states that he has only 'sacrificed truth for the sake of making a rhyme' in the story of the recruits he travelled with: 'they were not going to Birmingham but only to York; their conduct however was as unpleasant as I describe.' 4 July 1944; St John's Cottage Cambridge. Landscape 12mo. 12 lines. Text clear and complete. Good on aged paper in envelope addressed by Lamb to Inglis. On 'seeing the picture after that long interval' he was 'not ashamed of it' but 'when it was new my friends used to rag me about my "Morgue" pictures' there being 'a few others of similar gruesome import'. Now that he is 'far past youth' he is 'painting mostly scenes of sweetness & serenity'. He is sorry that she is 'denied the priviledge sic I have enjoyed all these sinister times' that of being able to paint. 4 July 1944; St John's Cottage, Cambridge. unknown

The first two from 4 Chalcot Terrace London. 21 April and 11 December 1858. The third from 2 Winchester Road Avenue Road Regents Park NW. 24 December 1860. The three items in good condition on lightly aged and worn paper. ONE: 4 April 1858. 2pp. 12mo. Bifolium. Addressed to 'Mr. H Moore Messrs. Gambert & Co.' Regarding the financial arrangement surrounding his engraving 'The Miller's Daughter'. On the subject of 'the two repayment bills' he would 'rather not part with £50.00 for some two or three months to come'. TWO: 11 December 1858. 1p. landscape 12mo. Directing the firm to give the bearer 'six 6 Artists Proofs of Millers Daughter - which I long since promised to the owner of the Picture'. THREE: 24 December 1860. 2pp. 12mo. He has finished the work he has 'in hand' and is 'looking around me to see how next to occupy myself'. He considers that it 'might be to your inclination & interest to put the plate into my hands' of 'The Saviour in the Temple'. He knows 'how important time is in the carrying out of such an enterprise as this' and undertakes 'to devote to it the whole of my time & as to price I do not imagine we should have any difficulty as to that'. He will be too busy over the following days to visit Clark in person 'and so I send you the first act of the MSS I talked to you about - I may say I read the 1st. act one afternoon to Miss Terry who wanted to take it to Webster - but I was disinclined'. If Clark 'had anything to do with it - the Blacksmith would be the last word underlined part'. Moore's letter and the directions on separate Hoglands letterheads the letter dated 29 March 1973 and the directions undated. Copies of four Juda letters dated 13 May 1965 23 March and 3 April 1973 and 29 August 1974. ONE: Typed Letter Signed 'Henry' from Moore to Juda 'Dear Hans'. On letterhead of Hoglands Perry Green Much Hadham Herts. 29 March 1973. 1p. 12mo. He thanks Juda for telling him about 'the ART AUCTION in aid of "Save the Children Fund." I do know about it as some years ago I gave a sculpture and then a lithograph for this fund.' Moore has given so much work 'for these worthy causes . that the Inland Revenue people realising that they were losing a lot of tax through my work not being sold in the normal way made a ruling which I think applies only to me that I can only give work "to the Tate Gallery or any other public gallery or for a public monument of national importance." I was relieved when they made this ruling it solved many problems for me.' He concludes with best wishes to Juda and his wife the photograph Elspeth Juda. TWO: Autograph driving directions from Hoglands to Hoddesdon drawn in blue ink by Moore. On Hoglands letterhead. 1p. 12mo. Representing along the right-hand margin a snaking road route up from Hoglands in the bottom right-hand corner joining the A10 which is drawn vertically across the page below the letterhead to Hoddesdon in the top left-hand corner from which an arrow points leftwards off the page. THREE: Copy of typed letter from Juda to Moore. 13 May 1965. 1p. 8vo. Attached to Item Two. He thanks Moore for a 'wonderful afternoon'. 'Last night at Victor's Retrospective Exhibition - impressive and beautifully staged - we looked at our favourite Moores; the knife-edged two-piece which was bought by the Tate in 1963 appealed to Elspeth who remembers that you showed us part of this knife-edged piece last Tuesday; the other part you looked for was not there.' He concludes by askigng whether there is 'a possibility of your letting us have a similar piece as the one at the Tate' FOUR: Copy of typed letter from Juda to Moore. 23 March 1973. 1p. 8vo. The letter to which ONE replies. He realises that 'the flood of begging letters for worthy causes' Moore receives 'must increase daily' but is writing on behalf of his 'dear and old friend' Mrs Lola Hahn-Warburg who is in charge of the Save the Children Fund art auction. 'If you could see your way to part with a little sketch or drawing it would certainly be the highlight of the Auction.' FIVE: Copy of typed letter from Juda to Moore. 3 April 1973. 1p. 8vo. Moore's letter 'makes it very clear that you cannot possibly be as generous as you would like to be'. SIX: Copy of typed letter from Juda to Moore. 29 August 1974. 1p. 8vo. He is approaching the age of seventy 'I think you might still remember the event.'. 'I have given myself one gift: to thank you personally for the enlightenment you have given for all those years. The more my eyesight deteriorates the more vision there seems to be and "to see things" is a quality which you have given not only to me but to many thousands if not millions of people.' He describes three of his own sculptures which he is sending Moore under separate cover one of which 'is of course based on an objet trouve which I only slightly manipulated before it was cast at the Central School of Art and Design in which I still take a very active interest as you know. . To send you these three items is my only birthday present. What you should not do is to clutter up further your huge collection of similar if not more congenial items.' No place 7 Dec. 1878. Three pages 8vo bifolium small stain otherwise good condition. He comments initially on a cutting from a newspaper. Singular to relate there is more truth in that cutting than you wd imagine. Before leaving London I had persuaded Miss Kellogg to come to Brighton for the race week: I got a letter from her to say . I had a very bad Goodwood & lost heavily the first day at Brighton and wrote in the evening begging her top come as I could npot win a bet and she might change my luck: the second day was as bad as the first but she came down to Brighton that evening for the Cup Day: Speculum won the Cup I landed between 5 and 6000 and gave her a bracelet to commemorate his victory = If I remeber right I did win very nearly 10000 that day but it did little more than clear one over Goodwood and the first two days. Excuse a scrawl ."Note: His taste for gambling resulted in his fleeing the country in 1860 to escape his debts which had then reached £230000. In 1861 he married Henrietta Hope heiress of the wealthy Henry Thomas Hope in Paris. As part of the marriage settlement his debts were paid and an income of £50000 a year settled on the couple. Extensive lands in England and Ireland were also added to his family's holdings by inheritance from his father-in-law although Pelham-Clinton himself never controlled them due to the terms of that testament."
