‎Lord Northbourne‎

‎Look To The Land‎

‎London, Dent, 1942. 190 x 130 mm, 186 pp. Hardcover with blue cloth, no jacket. Reprint of the 1940 edition. This is a rare copy of the war edition which, due to war restrictions, contains less paper than usual and shows the "Authorized Economy Standard" seal of approval on the first page. "In May 1940, Lord Northbourne’s book ‘Look to the Land’ appeared. He coined the term ‘organic farming’. His book stripped out the prolixity, abstruseness, esotericism and mysticism of Rudolf Steiner, and, with compelling clarity, Lord Northbourne presented a manifesto of organic agriculture. From this point on, biodynamics and organics have developed in parallel, with the general recognition of biodynamics as a particular manifestation of organic agriculture." (John Paull, "The Global Growth and Evolution of Organic Agriculture", p. 5) "Lord Northbourne (1896-1982) was a man of exceptional vision, who already in the 1940s diagnosed in detail the sickness of modern society as stemming from the severance of its organic links with the wholeness of life. A leading figure in the early organic farming movement, his writings profoundly affected such other pioneers as Sir Albert Howard, Rolf Gardiner, Ehrenfried Pfeiffer, and H. J. Massingham. His path led him on to a profound study of comparative religion, traditional metaphysics, and the science of symbols, which he employed in incisive observations on the character of modern society. His later writings exercised considerable influence on his younger contemporaries E. F. Schumacher and Thomas Merton, and in many ways anticipate the essays of Wendell Berry." (Later summary of the book by Angelico Press) Walter Ernest Christopher James, 4th Baron Northbourne (1896-1982) was a precursor of what is now known as organic agriculture. He translated to English several works by Perennialists or Traditionalists René Guénon, Fritschof Schuon and Titus Burckhardt, and contributed frequently to the quarterly journal Studies in Comparative Religions. According to Wikipedia, "Lord Northbourne's garden at Elizabethan Northbourne Court near Deal in Kent, set within the standing former outbuildings (the manor house burned in the 18th century) and upon ancient terracing, nurtured for a century, is reputed one of the finest in England; it is not generally open to the public."‎

‎A few scruffing on the joints, firm binding. Some foxing and staining on the first pages. Text is all legible.‎

‎LORD BYRON [GEORGE GORDON BYRON], (1788-1824).‎

‎[FIRST TURKISH EDITION OF 'THE PRISONER OF CHILLON' PRINTED IN GENEVA] Silyon mahbusu. [= The prisoner of Chillon]. Translated by Abdullah Cevdet [Karlidag], (1869-1932).‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Foolscap 8vo. (18 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script. 38 p., 1 b/w portrait of Byron. A heavy tear on the back cover. The Prisoner of Chillon is a 392-line narrative poem by Lord Byron. Written in 1816, it chronicles the imprisonment of a Genevois monk, François Bonivard, from 1532 to 1536. After almost 100 years later, this poem was translated into the Ottoman Turkish by Abdullah Cevdet firstly printed in Geneva. Abdullah Cevdet, (1869-1932), was a leading Ottoman/Turkish free-thinker, materialist, and Westernizer. He was born in the town of Arapgir in Ma?muret?ül-Azîz Province of the Ottoman Empire and grew up in a pious, lower-middle-class Muslim household, where he received a strict religious education. His father's stubborn refusal of smallpox vaccination left him pockmarked for life and contributed to his eventual gravitation towards scientism. Abdullah Cevdet graduated from the Military Middle School in Ma'muret'ül-Azîz in 1885, and then entered the Kuleli Military Medical Preparatory School in Istanbul. Three years later, he enrolled in the Royal Military Medical Academy. At this time, he was still very religious; one of his early poetry books from this period includes a glowing "Na't-i Serif," a eulogy for the Prophet Mu?ammad. However, like many other cadets, Abdullah Cevdet's views underwent a drastic transformation in the academy, where he became an ardent scientistic thinker and materialist. Here he produced his first translations from major works of German Vulgärmaterialismus, such as Ludwig Büchner's Kraft und Stoff and Aus Natur und Wissenschaft. He continued to translate from European writers up until his death, including Vittorio Alfieri, Émile Boutmy, Lord (or George Gordon) Byron, Jean-Marie Guyau, Baron (or Paul-Henri Dietrich) d'Holbach, Friedrich von Schiller, William Shakespeare, and François-Marie Arouet (Voltaire). One of his most important contributions to Ottoman and Turkish intellectual debate was the translation of Gustave Le Bon's writings into Turkish and the introduction of his elitist ideas to the Ottoman elite. Abdullah Cevdet also continued to write poetry throughout his life. Although the poems he wrote in the academy bore strong Parnassian influences, his later work was increasingly Symbolist in nature. He also translated the Persian poetry of Khayyâm into Turkish. (Source: Oxford Islamic Studies Online; Cevdet, Abdullah). Özege 18963.; TBTK 7035. OCLC 754957413 (Not found an institutional copy in OCLC). First Edition. Extremely rare.‎

After almost 100 years later, this poem wastranslated into the Ottoman Turkish by Abdullah Cevdet firstly printed in Geneva. ‎Lord Robson [William Snowden Robson, Baron Robson] (1852-1918), English judge, Liberal MP, Solicitor General and Attorney Genera‎

‎Lord Robson William Snowden Robson Baron Robson English judge and Liberal MP Solicitor General and Attorney General. Two Autograph Letters Signed to ‘B Piffard Esq’ regarding his possible candidacy in the coming general election.‎

‎ONE: 26 May 1885. On letterhead of 45 Curzon Street Mayfair. W. London TWO: 15 June 1885. On letterhead of 3 Plowden Buildings Temple. E.C. London. Interesting items casting light on the nitty-gritty of Victorian constituency politics. Both are signed ‘W. S. Robson’ and addressed to ‘B. Piffard Esq’. Both in good condition lightly aged with the second a little spotted. Each on a bifolium. ONE 26 May 1885: 3pp 12mo. He has been informed ‘that it is now the wish of the Watford or Divisional Association that I should visit the Division & address meetings there. In fact they have asked me to speak at a meeting at Watford next Saturday evening & I have consented.’ He will be happy to ‘deliver my address at Hemel Hempstead on the Saturday following 2.5. Saturday week.’ He stresses that he is not visiting the division as a candidate. ‘I was asked to meet the Committee of the Divisional Association at Watford with the view of becoming a Candidate but declined to do so on grounds stated in a letter to them & which I shall be happy to explain to you when we have the pleasure of meeting.’ He agrees with Piffard ‘that it is the new voters who have mainly to be considered in the coming fight. They are at present outside the organisation of either party & must be won to Liberalism’. TWO 15 June 1885: 4pp 12mo. In much the same tone as One. Discusses his ‘Watford Speech’ which was not intended as ‘a declaration of political views’ but rather as ‘a controversial skirmish against the inconsistent & dishonest attitude of the Tories in modern politics’. His address ‘might be entitled “How shall we use our vote†’ He is still being cagey: ‘I would rather not appear definitely as a Candidate’. In the remainder of the letter - more than half - he describes how he believes the candidates should conduct themselves. For all his talk of dishonesty it was Robson who was hedging his bets; he never did stand for Piffard's district being elected to Bow and Bromley 1885-1885 and to South Shields 1895-1910. ONE: 26 May 1885. On letterhead of 45, Curzon Street, Mayfair. W. [London] TWO: 15 June 1885. On letterhead of 3, Plowden Buildi unknown‎
