‎Malcolm Osborne painter. Two Autograph Letters Signed to Westley Manning in the first describing his wartime enlistment in the Artists Rifles and training under the artist William Lee-Hankey.‎

‎The first from 11 Edith Grove Chelsea. 24 July 1915. The second from 15 Redcliffe Square South Kensington. 25 July 1921. Both letters in very good condition neatly written out on lightly-aged paper. ONE: 2pp. 4to. He begins: 'I am just sending you a line to let you know that I have now taken the plunge & have enlisted in the "Artists Rifles." So far the change of life & exercise I am finding quite enjoyable and beneficial although everything seems such a contrast to previous habits of living no doubt I shall become accustomed to things as time passes.' He has 'worried Mr Oakley Williams with reference to Red Cross work' but was told that there was 'not much chance of my services being made use of in that direction so I abandoned the idea'. He has since 'applied at the R.A.M.C. but found they were up to full strength so I have now forsaken my intention of taking Ambulance work'. He knows several of the men in the Artists' Rifles 'quite well. in fact I find that one of the Officers is Mr Lee Hankey the Etcher. It seems very curious now having to stand & salute him after knowing so well in private life. He is our instructor for panoramic drawing & map drawing & makes it very interesting.' He ends in the hope that Manning has found 'a suitable place to spend the Summer'. TWO: 2pp. 12mo. On bifolium. He begins by acknowledging a cheque 'for the proof of "Admiralty Archway" sold in Japan' and thanks him for his efforts in what has 'certainly turned out to be quite a successful venture'. He sends his sympathies to Manning for being unable to leave London it being 'a very anxious time for Mrs Manning' and concludes with his own plans to 'spend a few days by the sea'. ‎Good condition (very small lack on top joints, otherwise a very good copy) for this copy, complete with the 12 illustrations and the folding map, in which was joined an original photographic portrait of George Manington, signed on a paper pasted on the verso, by himself ! This portrait, preserved under silk paper, appears highly scarce, and no other portrait of George Manington appears to be available or published. As explained in the editors' note, "though well under forty years of age, he had been a student in France and Germany, a prospective doctor in Paris, a soldier in Algeria and Tonquin, a man of commerce in Indo-China, an interpreter, traveller, and journalist in South China, besides a participator in more fleeting occupations in many lands, including Japan and the Philippines. [... ] An educated gentleman, Mr Manington has given an insight into the unusual experiences of an Englishman in the French Foreign[Pg xiii] Legion, such as no ordinary "mercenary" could have done".‎

‎Erste französische Ausgabe der Bände I und II, der dritte Band wohl in der dritten französischen Ausgabe, mit dem aus Bd. I wiederholten Frontispiz; alle drei Bände in einheitlicher Aufmachung. Wahrscheinlich erschien diese von Henry Scheurleer und Jean Rousset de Missy (1686-1762) aus dem Englischen übersetze Ausgabe gleichzeitig bei Scheurleer in Holland und John Morphew in England. Der vermutlich in Jersey geborene Manley veröffentlichte ihre allegorische Satire auf die Londoner Gesellschaft 1709 als Secret Memoirs and Manners of several Persons of Quality, of Both Sexes. From the New Atalantis, an Island in the Mediteranean. in London. Zuvor hatte sie zu Gunsten der Whigs und in Zusammenarbeit mit Jonathan Swift, diverse Pamphlete ediert. Ihr höchst erfolgreiches Buch gehört in die Gattung jener Romane, die, mit Utopia überschrieben, gerade das Gegenteil einer idealen Gesellschaft zu beschreiben beabsichtigten. 1711 wurde sie deswegen zusammen mit dem Drucker und Herausgeber auf Befehl des Earl of Sunderland für kurze Zeit inhaftiert, was Lady Mary Wortley Montagu mit den Worten kommentierte: "Miserable is the fate of writers! If they are agreeable they are offensive, and if dull, they starve". Das Werk besteht aus einer Sammlung von einzelnen Geschichten, die durch eine Rahmenhandlung zusammengehalten werden. Darin kehrt die Göttin Astrea auf die Erde zurück, wo sie die im Mittelmeer gelegene Insel Atalantis besucht. "While on Atalantis, Astrea encounters Virtue and her mother, Intelligence, and the three share stories of what they have seen on their travels" (Women in World History X, S. 162). - Etwas gebräunt und stockfleckig, ein sehr gutes Exemplar in dekorativen modernen Halblederbänden.
