Mr Serjeant Ballantine [William Ballantine, Serjeant-at-Law] (1812-1887), lawyer and author ['The English Resident', journal; Bo
Mr. Serjeant Ballantine William Ballantine Serjeant-at-Law lawyer and author. Substantial Autograph Letter Signed praising 'a new family paper called "The English Resident"' with regard to 'English sojourners' in Boulogne-sur-Mer.
'Boulogne s/m June 18 1883'. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 4to. On first leaf of bifolium. Forty-three lines of neat text. In fair condition lightly aged and worn with a few small closed tears. The author 'Sir' is unnamed but is presumably the 'Editor' referred to in the text. Signed 'Wm Ballantine'. By recipient at head of first page: 'Letter from Mr Sergeant sic Ballantine / United Club -'. Begins: 'I have to acknowledge the receipt of what purports to be a specimen of a new family paper called "The English Resident" & which it is supposed will supply a want existing especially amongs the English sojourners of all descriptions in different French places of resort. & notably at this one of the most favourable watering places of the British people - Those who favoured me with the number in question were aware that for many years of a busy life there has rarely been a year during which upon more than one occasion I have not sought health and recreation uponits shores. I have had abundant opportunities of appreciating its advantages & recognizing its wants and I welcome very heartily the probabl advent of a newspaper which appears to be conducted upon principles likely to render it a very popular addition.' The second half of the letter is in much the same highfallutin tone see reference to 'the freedom and elasticity of Boulogne air' with Ballantine feeling that is is 'impertinent on my part to offer hints to an Editor so evidently experienced as the Gentleman who has supplied news in the number that I have had the pleasure of reading'. See Image of second page. 'Boulogne s/m June 18 1883'. unknown

Mr. Yorick [Sterne, Laurence]
A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy
RARE book containing all four volumes of "A Sentimental Journey", and "A Political Romance". Irish-born English author Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) wrote and first published the "A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy" in 1768 which immediately became extremely popular and helped establish travel writing as one of the dominant genres of the second half of the 18th century. "A Sentimental Journey" ends quite abruptly after its two first volumes, mid-sentence in fact, with the promise of two volumes to follow. This plan was interrupted by Sterne's death. John Hall-Stevenson, a friend of Sterne's, attempted to complete the work. Two volumes containing the continuation were published in 1769 and this rare 1774 edition includes all four volumes. 110x180mm. 328 pages. Seemingly original brown leather Hardcover. Gilt ribbed spine. Cover rubbed. and bumped on corners. Cover corners and spine edges bumped and peeling. Spine heavily rubbed and wrinkled. Inner cover and whitepages age-stained. Few pages slightly age-stained. Few pages slightly dog-eared. Rear whitepage fore edge slightly torn. Pages yellowing and wavy. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare edition of the classic book is in a surprisingly good and clean condition considering its age.

Mrs Humphrey Ward [ Mary Augusta Ward, nee Arnold ] (1851-1920), English novelist [ Harold Frederick (1856-98), London correspon
Mrs. Humphrey Ward novelist. Autograph Letter Signed 'Mary A. Ward' to W. J. Fisher regarding 'the fund to be raised for Mr. Harold Frederic's widow & children' expressing disquiet over 'circumstances disclosed' at .Frederic's inquest.
25 Grosvenor Place London SW on cancelled letterhead of Stocks Tring. 5 December 1898. An interesting letter regarding a celebrated Victorian scandal. In 1884 Frederic had come to England with his wife and five children as the London correspondent of the New York TImes. He set up a second household with Kate Lyon with whom he had a further three children. Lyons was a Christian Scientist and when Frederic suffered a stroke in 1898 she tried to cure him by faith healing but he died. At the instigation of Mrs Frederic Lyon was tried for manslaughter but was acquitted. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In good condition lightly-aged with minor traces of two tissue mounts. She begins by stating that his letter has remained unanswered due to 'health which is not very strong and an unusual pressure of letters'. She is 'somewhat puzzled what to say' but while contributing five guineas does not wish to be put on the committee of the fund 'for poor Mrs. Frederic & her children'. She concludes: 'I much admired some sides of Mr. Frederic's talent but circumstances disclosed at the inquest were very painful and my mind is so far from clear on the whole subject that I should prefer not to be on the Committee'. A postscript regarding the making out of the cheque for five guineas is in another hand. Loosely inserted is a slip of paper with a manuscript note by Fisher regarding the author of the letter. From a batch of papers received by Fisher in connection with the fund. 25 Grosvenor Place, London SW, on cancelled letterhead of Stocks, Tring. 5 December 1898. unknown

Includes Preface; The Isha Upanishad; The Isha Upanishad Another Version Kena Kaina Upanishad; Taittireeyo Upanishad; The Aitaryo; The Svetasvatara; Sentences from the Gita; and Mystical Passages. Hinduism is an Indian religion and dharma or way of life. It is the world's third-largest religion with over 1.2 billion followers or 15-16% of the global population known as Hindus. Hinduism has been called the oldest religion in the world many practitioners refer to their religion as San tana Dharma which refers to the idea that its origins lie beyond human history as revealed in the Hindu texts. Hinduism is a diverse system of thought marked by a range of philosophies and shared concepts rituals cosmological systems pilgrimage sites and shared textual sources that discuss theology metaphysics mythology Vedic yajna yoga agamic rituals and temple building among other topics. Prominent themes in Hindu beliefs include the four Puru rthas the proper goals or aims of human life; namely dharma ethics/duties artha prosperity/work kama desires/passions and moksha liberation/freedom from the passions and the cycle of death and rebirth as well as karma action intent and consequences and sa s ra cycle of death and rebirth. Hindu texts are classified into ruti "heard" and Sm ti "remembered" the major scriptures of which are the Vedas the Upanishads the Pur nas the Mah bh rata the R m yana and the gamas. Dhan Gopal Mukerji 6 July 1890 - 14 July 1936 was the first successful Indian man of letters in the United States and won a Newbery Medal in 1928. He studied at Duff School now known as Scottish Church Collegiate School and at Duff College both within the University of Calcutta in India at the University of Tokyo in Japan and at the University of California Berkeley and Stanford University in the US. Dhan Gopal took his ideology with him to America where he fell in with a number of dirt-poor 'anarchists' like himself. His experiences among them in San Francisco and New York are detailed in 'Outcast' the second section of his autobiography. In 1910 he enrolled at University of California Berkeley but transferred to Stanford University where he eventually received his A.B. degree in Philosophy in 1914. In San Francisco Bay Area he looked about for a way to support himself and pay for his college education and soon lit upon writing. Around 1916 he wrote Sandhya Songs of Twilight and Rajani or Songs of the Night two books of poems and Laila Majnu a musical play in three acts all published by Paul Elder and Company of San Francisco. In the 1920s Mukerji moved to New York City and began his most prolific period of writing published mainly by E.P. Dutton. Of his many children's books Kari the Elephant was the first to see publication in 1922 followed by Gay Neck the Story of a Pigeon in 1927. Gay was the most successful; Mukerji won the 1928 Newbery Medal from the American Library Association recognizing it as the year's best American children's book. Among Mukerji's writings for adults are A Son of Mother India Answers 1928 Devotional Passages from the Hindu Bible and Visit India with Me 1929 Disillusioned India 1930 and My Brother's Face 1932. The Face of Silence 1926 is about the nineteenth-century saint and visionary Ramakrishna Paramhansa and is said to have deeply influenced Romain Rolland. He felt deeply isolated and marginalized in America as he could do very little beyond raising funds to further the cause of the Indian independence movement. The choices he had made in life prevented him from ever returning permanently to India. The unhappiness of his final years drove him further into spirituality fueled his interest in the spiritual heritage of his motherland and gave urgency to his desire to interpret and explain India to the West. On 14 July 1936 his wife discovered Mukerji had hanged himself his New York City apartment. No note was left. E. P. Dutton & Co., Inc hardcover
