‎New Commentary on the Old English 'Prose Solomon and Saturn' and 'Adrian and Ritheus' Dialogues‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 435 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:8 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503603278.‎

‎Summary Who was not born, was buried in his mother's womb, and was baptized after death? Who first spoke with a dog? Why don't stones bear fruit? Who first said the word 'God'? Why is the sea salty? Who built the first monastery? Who was the first doctor? How many species of fish are there? What is the heaviest thing to bear on earth? What creatures are sometimes male and sometimes female? The Old English dialogues The Prose Solomon and Saturn and Adrian and Ritheus, critically edited in 1982 by J. E. Cross and Thomas D. Hill, provide the answers to a trove of curious medieval 'wisdom questions' such as these, drawing on a remarkable range of biblical, apocryphal, patristic, and encyclopaedic lore. This volume (which reprints the texts and translations of the two dialogues from Cross and Hill's edition) both updates and massively supplements the commentary by Cross and Hill, contributing extensive new sources and analogues (many from unpublished medieval Latin question-and-answer texts) and comprehensively reviews the secondary scholarship on the ancient and medieval texts and traditions that inform these Old English sapiential dialogues. It also provides an extended survey of the late antique and early medieval genres of 'curiosity' and 'wisdom' dialogues and florilegia, including their dissemination and influence as well as their social and educational functions. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Sourcing Wisdom: Commentary as Dialogue Organizing Wisdom: The Compilatory Structure of the Prose Solomon and Saturn (SS) and Adrian and Ritheus (AR) Transmitting Wisdom: Encyclopaedic Notes, Dialogues, and Florilegia Disputing Wisdom: Medieval Lore Masters and Modern Scholars List of Texts I. ‎A Relation Of the State of the Court of Rome Made in the Year 1661 at the Council of Pregadi by the Most Excellent, the Lord Angelo Corraro, Ambassador from the most Serene Republique of Venice to Pope Alexander VII.‎

‎Londres, T. Mabb, 1664. Accompagné d'un second relié avec le premier, "A new relation of Rome as to the Government of the city, the Noble Families thereof, the Revenue and Expences of the Pope, the Courts of Justice, the Offices, the Congregations of Cardinals, and other Particulars very Curious. Taken out of one of the Choicest Cabinets of Rom, and English'd by Gio[vanni] Torriano, an Italian and Professor of the Italian Tongue", également édité par T. Mabb la même année, décoré de bandeaux. ************************************************ London, T. Mabb, 1664. First edition of the English translation of the book *Relation de la cour de Rome*, made in 1661 at the Council of the Pregadi by the Most Excellent Lord Angelo Corraro, Ambassador of the Most Serene Republic of Venice to Pope Alexander VII. A 16mo (150 x 94 mm) in two parts of (xix) 109 + (xv) 64 pp. Contemporary morocco binding, spine with horizontal decorations, losses at the head and tail, portrait of Pope Alexander VII as frontispiece, "ROME" in ink above the portrait. Translated from the Italian (from the French?) by J. B. Gent. Imprimatur of 1663, dedication to Mathias von Beuningen, index in alphabetical order ("Table"), text. Headpieces and initials. Accompanied by a second volume bound with the first, "A New Relation of Rome as to the Government of the City, the Noble Families thereof, the Revenue and Expenses of the Pope, the Courts of Justice, the Offices, the Congregations of Cardinals, and other Particulars Very Curious. Taken out of one of the Choicest Cabinets of Rome, and English'd by Giovanni Torriano, an Italian and Professor of the Italian Language," also published by T. Mabb the same year, decorated with headpieces. According to commentators Willems and Goldsmid, the pseudonym Angelo Corraro actually conceals Charles de Ferrare du Tot, a councilor to the king in the Parliament of Normandy in Rouen. The French version of the work was printed under a false address in Amsterdam by Daniel and Lodewijk Elzevier, from the original edition, typeset the same year in Rouen by Laurent Maurry under the pseudonym Almarigo Lorens. The mention of "translation from Italian" seems to continue the game of masks initiated by the original French edition.‎

‎Très rare ensemble d'une édition originale en anglais de ce livre sur les intrigues du Vatican de l'époque et d'un livre de commentaires budgétaires sur la papauté. ‎Charles Greville [ Charles Cavendish Fulke Greville ] (1794-1865), English diarist ('The Greville Memoirs') and first-class cric‎

‎Cholera; Charles Greville celebrated diarist and first-class cricketer. Autograph Signature 'C Greville' to part of letter.‎

‎No place. 28 November 1831. The Greville Memoirs caused an uproar on its publication in 1874. Queen Victoria described it as a 'dreadful and really scandalous book' which should be 'severely censored and discredited'. Disraeli characterised its author as 'the vainest being—I don't limit myself to man—that ever existed; and I don't forget Cicero and Lytton Bulwer … when he was not scandalous he was prolix and prosy—a clumsy wordy writer … a more verbose indefinite unwieldy affair without a happy expression never issued from the pen of a fagged subordinate of the daily press'. On both sides of a piece of paper cut from a letter. In good condition lightly aged. The verso reads: 'Sir Your Most Obedt Servant C Greville 28 Nov. 1831 A Report to be transmitted accordingly on Monday in every Week. -' The recto reads: '… requesting by desire of Viscoun<t> Palmerston that a Weekly Repo<rt> may be made out and transmi<tted> to that Department relative to the state of health in London with reference to Cholera Morb<us> I am to desire that you will …'. Note: "The first incidence of cholera in England occurred in Sunderland in October 1831 when a ship carrying sailors who had the disease docked at the port. The ship was allowed to dock because the port authorities objected to and therefore ignored instructions from the government to quarantine all ships coming from the Baltic states. From Sunderland the disease made its way northwards into Scotland and southwards toward London. Before it had run its course the disease had claimed some 52000 lives." ‎Charles I - King of England, etc; Baron Finch of Fordwich.‎

‎HIS MAJESTIES DECLARATION: TO ALL HIS LOVING SUBJECTS, OF THE CAUSES WHICH MOVED HIM TO DISSOLVE THE LAST PARLIAMENT. Published by His Majesties speciall command.‎

‎pp. [2], 55. Signatures: A^(4)(-A1) B-G^(4) H2. There are two settings of this same edition known (no priority as to first issue, and many copies contain mixed formes). This setting has the title page with a small version of the royal arms; and on the verso a large, full page, engraved version; and the last line of D4v begins: as ever'. **Short contemporary Ms. note on title: 'This p'lament began Apr. 16, 1640 & was dissolved May 5 folowing.' Small 4to. 190 mm. Later blue boards binding; leather title strip lettered in gilt. Clean and attractive copy. Charles I (1600-1649), King of Great Britain and Ireland. In his early disputes, arguments, and battles with the Scots, tried a new tool. He resolved to call an English parliament, and to ask for means to enable him to make war effectually upon Scotland. The discovery of an attempt made by the Scottish leaders to open negotiations with the king of France led him to hope that the national English feeling would be touched. In the meanwhile the English privy councillors offered him a loan which would enable him at least to gather an army without parliamentary aid. The Short parliament of 1640 was opened by the King on 13 April with a few words indicative of the gravity of the situation, the task of more fully setting forth the royal wishes and intentions being devolved upon the Lord Keeper (Baron Finch). Under Pym's leadership the Parliament showed itself disposed to ask for redress of grievances as a condition of a grant of supply, and it subsequently refused to give money unless peace were made with the Scots. On 5 May Charles dissolved parliament by means of this Declaration. Getting money by irregular means, he proceeded to push on the war, and formed an Irish army to join the mutinous and un-warlike Royal army. Terrified and exasperated Englishmen, believed that this army would be used in England to crush their liberties. The Scots knew that the opinion in England was in their favour, and they had already entered into communication with the parliamentary leaders. On 20 Aug. they crossed the Tweed, defeated part of the royal army at Newburn on the 28th, and soon afterwards occupied Newcastle and Durham. Charles's money was by this time almost exhausted, and he was obliged to summon the English peers to meet him in a great council at York, as there was no time to get together a full parliament. The great council met on 24 Sept. It at once insisted on opening negotiations with the Scots, and sent some of its members to London to obtain a loan to support the army during the progress of the treaty. Charles had now agreed to summon another parliament, and the negotiations opened at Ripon were adjourned to London. Possibly written by John Finch, Baron Finch of Fordwich (1584-1660), Speaker of the House of Commons and Lord Keeper. STC (2nd ed.) 9262; Thomason, E.203[1]; Lincoln's Inn. Catalogue of Pamphlets, 1506-1700. The attractive First Edition of a scarce and important pamphlet. KING CHARLES I DISSOLVES THE "SHORT PARLIAMENT". **PRICE JUST REDUCED! STC 2‎

‎Six Autograph Letters Signed all 'Halifax' and one secretarial letter from Charles Lindley Wood 2nd Viscount Halifax 'Lord Halifax' to Canon Edward James Russell regarding the English Church Union and the evils of 'Undenominationalism'.‎

‎1900 2 1907 4 and 1908 1. Four from Hickleton Doncaster one from Garrowby Bishop Wilton York one from 79 Eaton Square London and one from Harrowgate. The seven letters total 23pp 12mo. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. The third letter written from Hickleton on 7 January 1907 is in a secretarial hand Halifax being 'laid up with Influenza' and 'utterly good for nothing'; it carries an autograph postscript by Russell at the head of the first page. The first letter 14 July 1900 invites Russell to fill the 'vacancy on the list of Clerical members of our E.C.U. Council'; Russell's acceptance is acknowledged in the second which also discusses charges of 'disloyalty'. The third letter 7 January 1907 refers to 'the battle . on the Education question' which has 'only just begun . I think we want to construct a policy for ourselves & if possible carry the war into the enemy's country'. A week later Halifax discusses a conference in Manchester which he would like to attend despite not feeling 'up to speaking at a public meeting'. The letter includes a two-page statement concerning Halifax's position on 'Undenominationalism' 'as ever the enemy'. Halifax has written to the Bishop of Manchester on the subject of education and feels that 'we ought for one thing to insist that those who want Cowper Temple teaching should pay for it - just as it now seems to be admitted by every one that denominationalists have to pay for their own denominational teaching'. Halifax asks for Russell's and Canon Cleworth's views on the question and the next two letters concern an attempt to arrange a meeting to discuss it with reference to 'good' resolutions in Convocation. In the last letter 19 January 1908 Halifax states that he has been talking to 'Mr Hall' about 'the matter in question' and that while 'he could not of course pledge the Union to any constitution . he feels - as much as I do - and as you express in your letter how entirely the object is one which the Union ought to help'. 1900 (2), 1907 (4) and 1908 (1). Four from Hickleton, Doncaster, one from Garrowby, Bishop Wilton, York, one from 79 Eaton Squar unknown‎
