Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), was an English novelist, humorous poet, and priest in the Church of England. He was very much better known by his nom de plume - Thomas Ingoldsby. From Wiki: "on the establishment of Bentley's Miscellany in 1837 he began to furnish the series of grotesque metrical tales known as The Ingoldsby Legends. These became very popular, were published in a collected form and have since passed through numerous editions. In variety and whimsicality of rhymes these verses have hardly a rival since the days of Hudibras. But beneath this obvious popular quality there lies a store of solid antiquarian learning, the fruit of patient enthusiastic research, in out-of-the-way old books, which few readers who laugh over his pages detect." John Gay (1685-1732) was an English poet and dramatist and member of the Scriblerus Club. In 1727 he wrote for six year old Prince William, later the Duke of Cumberland, Fifty-one Fables in Verse, for which he naturally hoped to gain some preferment, although he has much to say in them of the servility of courtiers and the vanity of court honours. He was offered the situation of gentleman-usher to the Princess Louisa, who was also still a child. His 'Splendid Shilling' (1701, 1705) is a parody of Milton. 'Cyder' (1708), a utilitarian poem describing the cultivation of apples and the pressing of cider, is modeled after Virgil's 'Georgics'. This is a fine early collection of of Philips' major poems, works that, "written in revolt against the heroic couplet, between the death of Dryden and the appearance of Pope, occupy an important position in the history of English literature."
