Mildly XLib. James Orchard Halliwell (1820-1889) was a biographer of Shakespeare, book collector, antiquarian, and prodigal scholar. In spite of his intelligence and industry, Halliwell's life was dogged with controversy on both personal and professional fronts. His marriage to the daughter of Sir Thomas Phillips did not meet with Phillips' approval, and the young couple was disinherited and placed in financial st aits. He was later investigated for book theft from the library of Trinity College, Cambridge, regarding several volumes later sold to the British Museum, but no charges were ever filed and Halliwell was able to clear his name. Later disputes arose over Halliwell's views concerning the authenticity of various Shakespeareian works. His quarrel with the authorities at Stratford-on-Avon led to his decision not to bequeath his important personal Shakespeare collection to their library; instead, it was sold to a buyer in the United States upon Halliwell's death. The text includes: "A Short Bibliography of the W itings of Samuel Butler and of the Books and Articles Concerning Him". Samuel Butler was born in Langar, Nottinghamshire. The son of a clergyman and grandson of a Bishop, he was educated at Shrewsbury and St John's College, Cambridge. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1859, where he achieved success as a sheep-farmer. His letters home to his father were compiled to form 'A First Year in Canterbury Settlement' (1863), which later became the core of his most popular work, 'Erewhon'. He returned to England in 1864, having accumulated a small fortune, and settled in Clifford's Inn, where he stayed until his death. In 1872 he published 'Erewhon' (an anagram for nowhere) anonymously. It attacked contemporary attitudes on morals, religion, education, and science by describing a land where (among other things) illness is considered a crime. Sick people are thrown in jail, as their sickness is their own fault. Sad people are also imprisoned, for grief is a sign of misfortune and people are held responsible for the actions that made them unfortunate. People who rob or murder, on the other hand, are treated generously and taken to the hospital to recover from their affliction. No machines are allowed in Erewhon, as a philosopher once speculated that machines could rapidly evolve and would take over the world. Students study anything that has absolutely no practical purpose at the University of Unreason. The book was scintillatingly popular. It still can be read with great enjoyment and relevance today. During the next decade Butler wrote a series of controversial scientific works. They were distinctly anti-Darwin, and especially opposed to certain aspects of the theory of natural selection. He also began experimenting in musical composition, and collaborated with his friend (and later biographer) Henry Festing Jones on the oratorio 'Narcissus' (1880). In 1896 he published the biography of his grandfather, Bishop Samuel Butler. Today, his best-known work is probably 'The Way of Al l Flesh'. It was the thoughtful result of many years of hard labor, but did not appear in his lifetime. "I am the 'enfant terrible' of literature and science. Sidney Smith (1771-1845) was one of the foremost English preachers of his da y; a champion of parliamentary reform; staunch advocate of Roman Catholic emancipation; and a figure famous for his intelligence, wit, and charm. After leaving Oxford he was ordained in the Church of England. He later attended lectures in moral philosophy, chemistry, and medicine at the University of Edinburgh, where he made many friends and helped to found 'The Edinburgh Review' (1802). For over twenty-five years he was a leading contributor to that important journal. In 1803 he moved to London and began a series of enormously popular lectures in moral philosophy. When the predominantly Whig ministry took office in 1806, Smith received the living of Foston-le-Clay, Yorkshire. At first he discharged his duties through a curate, until the Clergy Residence Act put an end to this common pract ice, and he left London for Yorkshire in 1809. Although he hated being isolated in Yorkshire, he won his parishioners' affection; and he continued to write effective polemics (especially on the Roman Catholic question). In 1828 he was installed as prebend of Bristol Cathedral. Under a Whig government it was expected that he would soon be a bishop; but opposition proved strong. Eventually, he succe eded in becoming a canon of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. On his brother Courtenay's death in 1839, Smith inherited a fortune, bought a house in London, and lived there until his own death. Scarce f irst American edition the 'standard' life of Smith.
