English Thomas Dunn
Autograph Manuscript signed fair copy of the lyrics to "Ben Bolt" with an Autograph Note of explanation
N.p. 1895. 5 stanzas of verse with 7-line note. 2 pp. on two sheets of blank stantionery. 8vo. Fine. 5 stanzas of verse with 7-line note. 2 pp. on two sheets of blank stantionery. 8vo. Author of "Ben Bolt" New Jersey Congressman and Enemy of Poe. Thomas Dunn English 1819-1902 was a proilific author of poems ballads and novels; he also server two terms in the U.S. Congress as a Representative from New Jersey; but his fame as a writer rests on the ballad in wrote in 1843 "Ben Bolt." First published in Nathaniel Parker Willis' magazine NEW YORK MIRROR "Ben Bolt" was set to music many times and became very popular especiallly in the version set to a tune by Nelson Kneass. In his note appended to this transcription of the poem English writes: "The foregoing stanzas are as they originally appeared in Willis & Morris's NEW YORK NEW MIRROR in the year 1843. Though they have been set to music eight tiimes the only popular melody was the one take from a German air by Kneass. The words there - three stanzas only being taken - are very much mutilated." "It was hugely successful at the time but had a new lease of life as the song that Trilby O'Ferrall sings in the novel TRILBY 1894 by George du Maurier. It is described in the novel as an 'unsophisticated little song' but when Trilby performs it under the influence of the sinister hypnotist Svengali it reawakens a 'cosmic vision of the beauty and sadness of things' in her former lover Little Billee." Derek B. Scott THE SINGING BOURGEOIS: SONGS OF THE VICTORIAN DRAWING ROOM AND PARLOUR. Aldershot Hampshire; Burlington VT: Ashgate 2001. Ironically "Ben Bolt" being a tribute to a long-lasting friendship English is also remembered as the bitter foe of his former friend Edgar Allan Poe. The two had a falling out which resulted in a fist fight as well as a long running literary feud. unknown

William Charles Macready 1793 1873 English actor
autograph letter
To 'John Knowles' the letter is marked 'Private'. <br />'Thank you for your frank and confidential letter. I will meet your advances as they justly deserve putting you.in possession of the situation in which I stand and of the degree of probablity that exists of my being able in case we agree terms to make the experiment of restoring the fallen character of the Bath Theatre. He goes on to write that he is under obligation to Mr. Bunn Alfred Bunn theatre manager of both Drury Lane and Covent Garden. At this point Macready is two years away from his infamous assault on Bunn. The two men were not close friends. 'Should he claim my services . I have no alternative but to resign all idea of Bath as I would not trust such an undertaking to any agent or deputy whatever. It would be my personal influence industry activity experience.that I should chiefly depend for success.'<br />He is nonetheless at pains to point out that success is not guaranteed.<br />'At present the Bath Theatre is not to be compared as a theatrical speculation with the Bristol - so have times changed: it is down to the very ground.the property is .so much more deteriorated.look at last season!'<br />He is not even sure there is a 'theatrical taste in the city' or if one needs to be created. He mentions again his obligations to Bunn and outlines the practical financial difficulties of keeping his house at Elstree and his chambers in London as well as possibly a house in Bath. 'This is no trifle'. He balances the speculative nature of the venture against 'security' and begins to discuss money. 'I would not object to guarantee £500 - and not one shilling more - but I would place the other £200 and even £100 added to that upon the contingency of success either depending upon the time to which I might extend the season.I have used no reserve with you you know exactly my views and situation.'<br />The letter in good condition with small area of loss of paper by wax seal where originally opened by the recipient.<br />Macready did not take up the lease of the Bath Theatre but his stepmother Sarah did fourteen years later. She also managed the Bristol Theatre Royal. <br />John Knowles was Chief Clerk in the Surveyor's Department of the Navy Office until 1832 when he became Managing Director of the Economic Life Assurance Office in Blackfriars and the letter is addressed there. <br />

Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson 1889 1946 English artist
autograph letter dripping with sarcasm
Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson 1889-1946 English artist autograph letter. <br />Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson 1889 - 1946 artist. Nevinson was initially influenced by Marinetti and the Futurists and at the outbreak of war in 1914 he went to France with the Friends i.e. Quaker Ambulance Unit. He was deeply struck by his experiences and his first paintings made during the war drew on the Futurist styles. These paintings made him famous but he later changed his style to something more realistic. Throughout his career from his student days he felt persecuted and undervalued and the letter shows this attitude very clearly. He was always a tetchy character confrontational and he made many enemies. His correspondence held in the Imperial war Museum shows increasingly racist tendencies He suffered a stroke in 1942 and I would guess by the handwriting - he had to use his left hand after the stroke - that this letter dates post 1942. the hand is scrawly - but readable - and has several crossings out. The letter is written in reply to an editor at the London Evening Standard inviting Nevinson to contribute to an ongoing series of 'quandaries' to which celebrities offered their views. Good condition envelope folds minor creasing written rectos only. The enclosure referred to in the first line is not present.<br />I enclose my answer to Quandary 16. Do I get an honorarium Or do you use my name to get your paper publicity for nothing Poor Lord Rothermere - that great philanthropist is now so hard up owing I am sure to his wonderful generousity in the past - that he expects famous professional people to write just for fun to get his papers a good name. I am sure the Beaverbrook press consider a labourer worthy of his hire. BUT perhaps not poor newspapers even starving artists I find moved to pity by their new straightened circumstances & never suspect these institutions of meanness. I hope you will ask the Lady typist to spell my name right. It is so unrefined to write to a man who is a perfect stranger & call him by his wrong name & wrong initials without even an honorarium!!! C.R.W. Nevinson<br />
