Cambridge: John Archdeacon 1767. Two vols. 6.75 x 4.25". Contemporary Scottish black morocco spine in six compartments red morocco lettering pieces in the second others with gilt saltire with small flowers covers framed with distinctive interlocking tool impressed individually. Red and black PRINTED book labels of Elisabeth Hall dated 1769 pasted onto "Dutch gilt" endpapers. Some modern glue is visible in the inner hinge of the lower cover of vol. 2. Two original binder's blanks at the front and back of both volumes. Suitable for exhibition and study. This well preserved set of Scottish bindings is further distinguished by FOUR copy-specific letterpress bookplates printed in red and black no doubt in Scotland which reads in full: <br/><br/>"Elisabeth Hall Her Bible. 20th June. MDCCLXIX." <br/><br/>Concerning this printed bookplate it would appear that the present volumes contain the only known impressions of it thereby meriting inclusion in ESTC and elsewhere.<br/><br/>The tools on the front cover of the bindings have not been matched with published examples but the spine treatment and endpapers are decidedly Scottish.<br/><br/>That the Psalms were printed in Edinburgh Alexander Kincaid 1763 leads us to the conclusion that the present bindings are not only Scottish but that the original owner of them Elisabeth Hall was certainly Scottish herself.<br/><br/>John Archdeacon's 1767 Cambridge Bible is not in the National Library of Scotland. Unsurprisingly NLS has four copies of Alexander Kincaid's 1763 Psalms two of which are in the Bindings Collection: Bdg.s.8072 and Bdg.s.1002. John Archdeacon unknown books

Rio de Janeiro: Nova Fronteira Memoria Brasileira 1980. Hardcover. Near Fine. Folio size 124 pp. inscribed by Claudio Arrau. A little-known work on the great coffee plantations of the nineteenth century in the area around Rio de Janeiro. Coffee first started to appear in the area around 1760 and by 1822 there were plantations in the area with more than fifty thousand coffee plants with massive tracts of rainforest being cleared first from the vicinity of Rio and later Sao Paulo for coffee growing. The families owning the plantations built huge homes some of them almost small castles - one of which the Parque Sao Clemente had ceilings so beautiful that special reclining chairs were installed so that they could be better admired. This book explores those fazendas both inside and out to provide a glimpse into this glittering past. The text of the book is in Portuguese and an accompanying softcover book has the English translation.<br/><br/>This volume was previously owned by Claudio Arrau 1903-1991 a Chilean pianist widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century. <br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Quarter tan cloth with black paper boards pictorial paste-down of one of the plantation houses inset into the front board with titlte in silver brown lettering on the spine decorative endpapers of stylised palm trees title page in red and black with a small tipped-in photograph tipped-in colour photographs throughout drawn map towards the rear of the book showing the location of the fazendas along the Rio Paraiba do Sul; folio size 13.75" by 10.5" pagination: i-iii 1-2 3-111 112-121 inscribed by Claudio Arrau "Rio de Janeiro 1981" on the first flyleaf. Please note the text is in Portuguese. Accompanying English translation in English a softcover booklet in black paper wraps stapled at the spine with gold lettering and publisher's device on the front cover 19 pp. In a slipcase covered in green paper with stylised palm tree pattern and a pictorial paper label on the front board.<br/><br/>___CONDITION: Volume is near fine with clean boards a strong square text block with solid hinges straight corners with no rubbing the interior is clean and bright with the only prior owner markings in both volumes being the name written of Claudio Arrau as noted above and each of the tipped-in photographs is in fine condition; some light stray soil marks on the spine and a small old dampstain on the bottom edge of the spine a few of the final pages have some minor rippling from the old damp else fine. The accompanying English translation is also near fine clean overall with a few shallow creases on the wraps. Nine sammelband pamphlets bound in blind stamped decorative calf overlay recased with brown cloth boards; apparent shelf wear and toning to leaves each pamphlet constitutes approximately 16 pp. 8 vo. Scarce copies of all in disbound condition so this bound aggregate is a rare and singular entity. <br/><br/>A collection of poetry tracts in the 18th century assembled and bound as a set showcasing typical and popular poetry writing and style in England. This was a common practice to gather political satire and literary tracts and bind them together generally at the discretion of the owner or in some cases the printer and/or bookseller. The majority of these works are poetry written as political satire towards the Tory government. Both volumes bound in original blue pictorial gilt depicting Clark with sword in hand standing above Vincennes. Only minor rubbing to edges corners with wear previous owner's name dated 1896. There is a bit of foxing affecting each plate of the first volume as well as small tears at the top edge of each plate not affecting images. A small water stain in the margin of the first 4 plates in volume one and the first 3 plates in the second volume not affecting images. The plates in the second volume are on thicker paper. Most of the plates are dated individually and range from June 2nd 1852 to October 10th 1854. They measure 4" tall by 6.75" wide approximate. Natural scenes showing the countryside rivers and paddlewheelers and architecture of local buildings. Interesting ephemeral viewbooks in very good condition despite the minor faults. Double column text in roman type 63 lines to the full column engraved general title tinted by hand in rose pink and light blue wash woodcut headpiece and small ornament on New Testament title-page with continuous register but separate foliation full-page woodcut of Adam and Eve in Eden facing Genesis 31 woodcut text illustrations diagrams and maps woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces; foliation errors as typical; scattered staining throughout tape repaired tear on G2 cutting into side-notes and another on Ffff2 repaired with older cellotape. Contemporary calf over beveled wooden boards old sueded calf spine nailed to front and rear covers this done a very long time ago; catches perished but still a most impressive looking object and a quite decent copy overall of the Geneva Bible in Folio format in a contemporary binding. The Geneva version of the Old Testament translated by William Whittingham Anthony Gilby Thomas Sampson and perhaps others with Laurence Tomson's revision of the Geneva version of the New Testament and his translation of Franciscus Junius' translation of Revelation. Prescott detailing his various hunting excursions around the Kent countryside. Prescotts ownership inscription on front free-endpaper is dated 1871. His entries are easily read and cover Prescotts adventures on hunting hares with a skulk of foxes writing Found another in the same field ran her straight back to Old Park round the pond and the pack hunted her beautifully
. Dec. 16 1871. The hunts took place over sprawling village and countryside or as he describes hop-gardens hills and ploughs of land in the Herne Bay area of Kent England. Many entries are headed by recognizable locations; Stroud Park Broomfield Hilsborough Wolston Heath and Chislet Mill and are dated with month and sometimes year. Only a portion of the way full his entries span about three years the first dated: Oct. 19 71 Stroud Park and last March 25 1874. Contemporary black morocco marbled endpapers and marbled endpapers with original brass clasp faint splitting at lower hinge of first few leaves strengthened at endpapers corners rubbed otherwise in very good shape especially considering it was wielded around so much of the Kentish countryside. Prescott makes many personal anecdotes about his day noting things in his surroundings like scent moderate or adding his opinions we could not kill I think we should have but the sun was too hot. Prescott often ends the entries with jotting down the days weather as something like very indifferent but as good as could be expected with a very cold east wind or simply stating Frost. It is evident from Prescotts personal asides that he was a vigilant huntsman quite dedicated to the task. Further personal glimpses reveal a record of his horses charming names including Salt Fish and Molly Malone. At the time Prescott was taking these notes Herne Bay area and the Kentish villages would have been teeming with people. The Victoria era was one of prosperity when elite English folk flocked to popular destinations to partake in their favorite pastimes. From 1873 on in the journal Prescott notes he was hunting with Pytchley by writing their name in parentheses. The Pytchley hunt is an organization originally based in Northamptonshire in formation as early at the 1630s. The organization is still active today. Pytchleys website notes that from 1819-1873 right as Prescott began with Pytchley for one year the Althorp and Pytchley countries were hunted by one pack with a second pack established at Brigstock. Prescott was part of the famous hunt organization at a time when it was amid significant change and expansion. His notes may keep further clue of such growth. While the huntsman himself may be unknown to history the anecdotal evidence in Prescotts diary gives us a glimpse of the Victorian man fond of his sport. <br/><br/> hardcover books

A New Hieroglyphic Bible; With Above Four Hundred Cuts
Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd 1818. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. 108pp. Publishers original drab brown cloth; upper board blocked in gilt with title within a floral design. Ink name on front pastedown. Cloth soiled binding lightly shaken gilt rubbed else a very good copy. The date of publication is taken from the Advertisement page 4. This seems to be the first Oliver and Boyd printing of a hieroglyphic Bible and the second Edinburgh printing after the Doig and Sterling edition of 1814. The accepted publicaton date for this Bible is 1818; three other known copies are known to have been issued either in quarter leather and marbled paper boards or in printed card covers. Our copy is in what is clearly publisher's cloth with gilt blocked on the upper board. This combination is unknown before 1826. It is likely then that the textblock while printed earlier was bound after 1826. Exceedingly scarce. Protected in a custom clamshell box. Oliver & Boyd hardcover books
