‎18 lines on folded self envelope with cancelled stamp signed "GeoCruikshank" Cruikshank writes that at an "elocution class" at the Southwark Literary & Scientific Institution" he had intimated a friendship with MacKay and that the class entreated him to get McKay to address the asembly. Cruikshank writes this letter enclosed with an invitation not included. Small piece missing from the bottom of the leaf not affecting any of the holograph. from Wikipedia: Cruikshank George 1792–1878 English caricaturist illustrator and etcher; younger son of Isaac Cruikshank 1756–1810 caricaturist. Self-taught George early gained a reputation for his humorous drawings and political and social satires. He succeeded James Gillray as the most popular caricaturist of his day. Cruikshank illustrated more than 850 books and contributed to such publications as the Meteor the Scourge and the Satirist. Among the best of his many illustrations are the famous Life in London in collaboration with his brother; his masterly etchings for Grimm's German Popular Stories; and the 12 etchings in Richard Bentley's miscellany which include the notable illustrations of Oliver Twist. In his later years Cruikshank made many drawings depicting the evils of intemperance such as The Drunkard's Children The Bottle and The Gin Trap. Collections of his works are in the British and the Victoria and Albert museums.<br /> Charles Mackay 27 March 1814 – 24 December 1889 was a Scottish poet journalist author anthologist novelist and songwriter remembered mainly for his book Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds. unknown‎

The title to the Apocrypha is printed. The latter portion of part 2 and all of parts 3 and 5 were probably printed by Whitchurch. The rest of the book appears to be printed in a different though somewhat similar type with flourished initials before the chapters.</p><p><strong>Collation:</strong> 6 -2-5 6-1-5 a-l8 -a2-6 m10 A-R8 S6 Aa-Ss8 Tt4 Aaa-Mmm8 unsigned2 A-N8 O12-O1-10. <strong><em>Lacks</em></strong> 9 preliminary ff 5 ff. in the OT Gen 3-15 10 ff in the New Testament 1 Pet 3 – Rev 17.</p><p><strong>Binding: </strong>Later red straight-grained morocco. Boards paneled in triple-gilt lines. Spine with four triple-raised bands and a red morocco label with the words "Holy Bible Cranmer's Version" in gilt. All edges gilt. The books of the Old Testament are arranged in Jewish order with Chronicles at the end. One of 950 copies.</p><p><strong>Binding: </strong>Rebacked in matching black calf with original spine laid down. Embossed cloth spine with "Holy Bible" and "Translated by Julia E. Smith" lettered in gilt to spine. All edges speckled red. Rubbed to edges with loss of small portions of relaid spine.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Crisp clean and bright.</p><p><strong>Provenance: </strong>Note inked on front flyleaf reads "This Bible translated by my late wife Julia E. Smith is presented to Mrs. Susan E. Tullar by Amos A. Parker Aged Ninety Eight – Fitzwilliam N.H. June 20th 1889."</p><p><strong>Note: </strong>A remarkably well-preserved copy of the first and only Bible translated entirely by a woman. Julia E. Smith 1792–1886 of Glastonbury Connecticut used her knowledge of Latin Greek and Hebrew to render the entire Bible into English. A member of the Sandemanian sect which sought to restore the Apostolic church she dedicated eight years to her translation but did not publish it for another twenty-one years.</p><p>Sampson recounts Julia's deep passion for the project: "I cannot express how greatly I enjoy the work of translating and now the real meaning of different texts would thrill through my mind till I could hardly contain myself." According to one account she became so engrossed in her work that she often failed to hear the dinner bell and had to be summoned by her sisters.</p><p>Elizabeth Cady Stanton in her radical and controversial work <em>The Woman's Bible</em> remarked that Smith's translation would become a rarity in the next century "much sought after by bibliomaniacs to say nothing of scholars who will want it for its real value."</p><p><strong>References:</strong> Herbert 2202; Hills 1918; Rumball-Petre 201; Stanton Elizabeth Cady. <em>The Woman's Bible</em>. Woodcut maps woodcut chapter initials and decorated head- and tailpieces throughout.</p><p><strong>Collation:</strong> Bible - A-C6 A-Z6 Aa-Zz6 Aaa-Zzz6 Aaaa-Nnnn6 Oooo4. Complete with all titles.</p><p><strong>Binding:</strong> Brown calf over beveled oak boards expertly rebacked. Boards within double blind paneled borders with eight cornerpieces backstrips metal bosses and two straps. Plain endpapers.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> General title trimmed to border and laid down; A6 of both Calendar and Bible text frayed with closed tear; A25 loss to lower margin reducing border; L12 Oo1 Qqq1-4 Xxx small lower marginal loss; Oooo4 final leaf with small loss costing two letters. A clean and well-preserved example of an important Bible.</p><p><strong>Note:</strong> The last printing of the Bishops' Bible used by the King James' translators in their work. Robert Barker who held the patent for printing the Bishops' Bible provided 40 unbound copies of this 1602 edition for the project.
