Sheila Kaye-Smith [married name Emily Sheila Fry] (1887-1956), English novelist [George Bell & Sons, London publishers]:
Sheila Kaye-Smith novelist. Autograph Letter Signed to 'Mr. Cazenove' of the publishers George Bell & Sons regarding the publication of her first novel 'The Tramping Methodist' requesting corrections to the proofs and suggesting the title.
On letterhead of 9 Dane Road St Leonards on Sea. 20 May 1908. 3pp. 12mo. On bifolium. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. Docketed at head of first page. She begins by explaining that at her 'interview with Mr. Bell on the 8th. he suggested an alteration in an important sentence giving me the alternative of taking the MS. home with me or of correcting the sentence in the proofs. At the time I thought the latter course would be the best but it occurs to me that it would save expence if the correction was made now.' She asks Cazenove to 'ask Mr. O'Connor if he would kindly alter the words in accordance with the enclosed not present'. She indicates the relevant sentence adding that she assumes that 'it is the publishers who bear the cost of necessary alteration to the proofs as nothing was said about it in the agreement'. Turning to the problem of 'how it is that a story supposed to be told by a man is written by a woman' she admits that she 'cannot think of anything that would do' by way of introductory explanation. 'Perhaps the title might read - The Tramping Methodist. The narrative of Humphrey Lyte Preacher. I would rather have this than put "edited by" before my name on the title page.' It does not appear that the suggested subtitle was utilised. On letterhead of 9 Dane Road, St Leonards on Sea. 20 May [1908]. unknown

Eden Phillpotts (1862-1960), English novelist, strongly associated with Dartmoor, Devon, his daughter Mary Adelaide Eden Phillpo
Autograph Letter Signed from the novelist Eden Phillpotts to an unnamed woman discussing the handling of socialism in his 1926 play with his daughter Adelaide 'Yellow Sands' as well as his own political views sympathetic to Italian Fascism.
Torquay Devon. 4 May 1927. 2pp. 4to. 41 lines. In fair condition on aged paper. He begins by stating that 'Yellow Sands' 'only touches social questions by the accident of the plot. Socialism is a word the definition of which no two people appear to agree about. Ask a dozen Socialists what they understand by their faith & they will each tell you something different.' The opinions depicted in the play are both 'clear' and 'foggy' 'but it is in no sense propagandist - I hate propaganda in art.' He goes on to discuss his own views: 'I am not a socialist. Socialistic & communistic ideals will undoubtedly be exploited in this country when Labour returns to power & I apprehend no vital or rational advantages under that regime.' In a twenty-three line postscript he expounds a position sympathetic to Fascism beginning: 'The masses have always needed string to lead them. Take Italy & take England under the Commonwealth. You may regard dictatorship as in every sense reactionary; but weighed in the balance of national prosperity & increased well-being for the greater number benevolent autocracy has a great deal to be said for it - given the men big enough to lead & powerful enough to impress their will on a nation & noble enough to act on high principles only.' He considers Britain to be 'a nation of political dwarfs. Labour has no genius to guide or guard . In the Liberal ranks you see what I mean: Lloyd George genius without principle; Lord Grey principle without a ray of genius.' Torquay, Devon. 4 May 1927. unknown

3 January 1896; The Author's Club 3 Whitehall Court SW London. 12mo 4 pp. 61 lines. Text clear and complete. Good on lightly-aged paper. An impressive letter applying for work. He does not expect Massingham addressed as 'W. H. Massingham' to remember their meeting 'in the Lobby' when he was 'chief reporter on The Sun' while at the same time holding 'a Parliamentary engagement on the staff of the C. N.' Gives details of his subsequent employment including joining the editorial staff of the 'Manchester Guardian' 'principally to look after their weekly paper which was in a sad way. I prolonged its existence rather than gave fresh life to it & in May last it died.' For the last four months he has been 'in Asia Minor & Syria seeing something of the disturbed country - an interview of mine with Sir Phillip Currie is to appear in the English Illustrated - & getting material which I hope may be useful to me'. He is 'now back in London extremely anxious to get back in the Press Gallery'. A 'descriptive writer' is more than he can hope for and he would like to 'secure a sessional engagement on the reporting staff of the Daily Chronicle'. He is a 'verbatim note taker' and 'a good summary writer' and is 'well acquainted with Parliamentary work'. Names six individuals 'who know what sort of journalist I am' including Clement Shorter and T. P. O'Connor. As 'a young man & a Radical' he would 'prefer the Daily Chronicle especially as it is also a literary paper'. Being 'a magazine writer' does not prevent him from 'being a reporter'. He is 'no novice to Parliamentary reporting for it is only eighteen months since I left it'. 3 January 1896; The Author's Club, 3 Whitehall Court, SW, London. unknown

Sir Charles A. Elton Sir Charles Abraham Elton; Sir C. A. Elton 1778 1853 English army officer author and translator John Tayl
Autograph Letter Signed 'Charles A. Elton' from Sir Charles Abraham Elton to John Taylor editor of the 'London Magazine' submitting a contribution on 'Homer's Battle of the Frogs and Mice' and discussing his own and other contributions.
'Clifton Bristol. August 16th.' 1821. 2pp. 4to. Bifolium. Good on lightly-aged paper. Addressed by Elton on reverse of second leaf to 'John Taylor Esq.' Taylor had assumed the editorship of the London Magazine on the death by duel of John Scott in February 1821. Elton begins by informing Taylor that he has 'not been able yet to manage the Batrachomyomachia to my mind'. Elton's translation of 'The Battle of the Frogs and Mice' would appear anonymously in the issue of October 1821 as the second of a series named 'Leisure Hours'. He has instead 'sent some chit-chat to serve as an introduction'. 'On Homer's Battle of the Frogs and Mice' appeared in September 1821 as the first of the series. He intends this as 'the first of occasional desultory papers of criticism poetry or the like: a specimen or two of the Battle of Frogs may form the second of the series'. Changing the subject he now declines two books Taylor has sent him to review: he feels that too much has already been said about Madame de Stael and he has 'already administered the ferula to her somewhat roughly'. He is 'equally diffident about Bonaparte's literary character' and asks whether 'Mr Hazlitt or Leigh Hunt' are not 'the fittest men to undertake it'. He feels that to 'enter fully' into Taylor's 'plan relative to the Monthly Literature seems to require the interchange of sentiments in conversation' and that this is 'one of the disadvantages of a periodical contributor residing in the country'. He suspects that 'a London domicile' is 'necessary for the convenient and ready arrangement and execution of this sort of monthly summary'. He has been 'thinking of some regular supply of poetry translated or original independent of the incidental passages in the Leisure Hours' but has not yet 'ascertained either my plan or my powers'. In the first part of a postscript he asks 'What is Knickerbocker Washington Irving & is he worth reviewing' This appears to be a reference to a footnote to the 'Epistle to Elia' by 'OLEN' published in the August 1821 issue of the London Magazine; the footnote also discusses two readings of that poem thanks Taylor 'for the Magazine' and ends 'It is a pity the writer who so ably reviewed Crabbe does not continue his "Series of Living Poets." 'Clifton [Bristol]. [August?] 16th.' [1821]. unknown

She begins by apologising for the delay in sending an autograph: 'In atonement I give you Anthony Trollope's signature which perhaps you have not got.' Reports that they 'went to the Italian lakes this summer. We aimed at Venice but gave it up because of the cholera.' She regrets that the recipient's 'friends book & chart do not prosper. Mr Bowes the Macmillan of the shop thought the chart a good plan and likely to succeed except that the size would be against it'. She has been 'very busy at present being on the committee of a meat association which is being got up among a number of families in Cambridge. I had an affecting interview with my butcher one of the least dishonest in his prices but I could not persuade him that it would be for his good to come to smaller profits. We shall part good friends but we shall part.' Her husband and F. D. Maurice are that year's two new Final Science Examiners. Describes the nature of this 'cheap work'. Describes the behaviour of her young daughter Margaret 'reproving and instructing' her father 'eating her fruit with the peel on'. 8 November 1867; Cambridge. unknown

Tommy Trinder [Thomas Edward Trinder] (1909-1989), English stage, screen and radio comedian with the catchphrase 'You lucky peop
Autograph draft of a circular letter by the comedian Tommy Trinder urging Equity members to vote in favour of Sunday opening in a wartime ballot on that question. With a typescript of the circular and a printed facsimile of Trinder's signature.
Undated 1943. The three items are stapled to one another in good condition on lightly-aged paper. The first item is the typescript which is 1p. 4to. It is addressed to 'Dear Brother Artist' and begins: 'You will possibly be rather surprised to receive a letter from me but after having spent most of my life in the Provinces I now find myself landed in London. I am surprised at the amount of discussion and activity that takes place here regarding the "politics" of the theatre - and realise how you in the Provinces are apt to get left out. With regard to Sunday Opening I think that this is a matter which primarily affects you personally. I am rather surprised to find that a few West End actors who know nothing of those train journeys from Scunthorpe to Lincoln via Plymouth because the Railway Company is repairing a tunnel - on Sunday! were opposed to bettering the travelling and working conditions of 75% of our Profession - and that means you again.' A reference to 'the Progressive bunch the anti-D.O.R.A.'S' follows with an injunction for 'those of you who are Equity members - to vote in the Ballot. Whether you are for or against - vote and vote now - post that card now.' The draft ends: 'Yours sincerely Signature block'. In a postscript Trinder apologises 'for poking my nose into something that appears not to concern me by sending you this book. But I feel it concerns everyone in the show business be it circus music-hall or the "legit." to give the Forces and the Public what they obviously want and need.' The facsimile of Trinder's signature the 'Signature block' referred to in the typewritten draft is 8.5 cm long on a 5 x 20cm strip of paper. The manuscript draft with several emendations is 4pp. 12mo and is written out in pencil on four leaves. A copy of Trinder's printed circular is among the Robert Donat papers at the John Rylands Library in Manchester. Undated [1943]. unknown

'7 March 1815 Melina Place Westr Road'. 1p. 4to. 31 lines. Fair on aged paper. On paper with watermarked date of 1814. Initialled 'G. C.'; with the words 'Copy to Morris' in the top left-hand corner. He states that he is 'in treaty with various Performers for the approaching Summer'. This enables him to communicate 'propositions' to the recipient and 'Mr Winston'. The second paragraph reads: 'In adopting this only measure you have left me according to the Deed of Ownership I request you to bear in mind that should I be as much impeded in my endeavours as in the Year 1813 the same causes will produce the same ruinous effects.' Should the recipient and Winston prevent Colman's 'formation of an entire last word underlined company of performers . the Theatre must once more in spite of all my struggles - to the contrary remain shut for the Summer'. The fourth paragraph concerns the "instruments" of the stage manager. The Oxford DNB notes that Colman was 'involved in a protracted chancery dispute from 1809 to 1816 with his business partner and brother-in-law David Morris' and that he resided within the King's Bench Rules between 1806 and 1817 at the instigation of 'S. J. Arnold the son of Dr Samuel Arnold the well-known composer from whom Colman had borrowed significant sums'. '7 March 1815 | Melina Place Westr Road'. unknown

Scarce. Lg.4to. ABEL BOYER: was probably born on 24 June 1667 at Castres in Upper Languedoc southern France. His father Pierre Boyer one of the two consuls or chief magistrates of Castres had been suspended and fined for his Protestantism. Boyer's education at the academy of Puylaurens was interrupted by the religious disturbances and leaving France with his maternal uncle Pierre Campdomerc a noted Huguenot preacher he finished his studies at Franeker in Friesland after a brief episode it is said of military service in Holland. Proceeding to England in 1689 he fell into great poverty and is represented as transcribing and preparing for the press Dr. Thomas Smith's edition of William Camden's Latin correspondence London 1691. A good classical scholar Boyer became in 1692 tutor to Allen Bathurst afterwards first Earl Bathurst whose father Sir Benjamin was treasurer of the household of the princess afterwards Queen Anne. Probably through this connection he was appointed French teacher to her son Prince William Duke of Gloucester for whose use he prepared and to whom he dedicated The Complete French Master published in 1694. In 1702 there appeared at The Hague the work which has made Boyer's a familiar name his 'Dictionnaire Royal Français et Anglais divisé en deux parties' ostensibly composed for the use of the Duke of Gloucester then dead. It was much superior to every previous work of the kind and has been the basis of very many subsequent French-English dictionaries; the last English unabridged edition is that of 1816; the edition published at Paris in 1860 is stated to be the 41st. For the English-French section Boyer claimed the merit of containing a more complete English dictionary than any previous one the English words and idioms in it being defined and explained as well as accompanied by their French equivalents. In the French preface to the whole work Boyer said that 1000 English words not in any other English dictionary had been added to his by Richard Savage whom he spoke of as his friend and who assisted him in several of his French manuals and miscellaneous compilations and translations published subsequently. The French taken out of the dictionaries of Richelet Furetiere Tachart the great dictionary of the French Academy and the remarks of Vaugelas Menage and Bouhours. The English collected chiefly out of the best dictionaries and the works of the greatest masters of the English tongue; Archbishop Tillotson Bishop Sprat Sir Roger l'Estrange Mr. Dryden Sir William Temple &c. Large Quarto; size approx. 10 x 8 x 3 inches. SCARCE. Heavy; extra postage needed. Will be well-packed for posting/shipping.
