‎‘A whole career lies between the quotations’: V. S. Pritchett English writer and critic. Autograph Letter Signed ‘Victor Pritchett’ submitting his ‘Turgenev’ i.e. the typescript of his ‘Gentle Barbarian’ to his editor ‘Mr Higgins’.‎

‎11 May 1977. On letterhead of 12 Regents Park Terrace London N.W.1. Pritchett’s ‘The Gentle Barbarian: The Life and Work of Turgenev’ appeared in 1977; the present letter is clearly addressed to his editor at the book’s publishers Chatto & Windus. Pritchett’s entry in the Oxford DNB describes his handwriting as ‘legendarily ugly and difficult to decipher’ but the present example is no worse than an average hand. 1p 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. Two fold lines. He is sending his ‘Turgenev’ and explains: ‘As you will see I have marked passages from the book in purple crayon and my own summary bridges in green. They are long because of course a whole career lies between the quotations.’ He hopes Higgins finds that ‘they are satisfactory; if they need changes in your opinion they can be altered’ but he gives dates when he will be ‘away in Cornwall’ for ‘A much needed holiday!’ He ends in the hope that Higgins is enjoying his holiday. ‎James Glaisher (1809-1903), English aeronaut and meteorologist who made balloon ascents with Henry Tracey Coxwell (1819-1900) [S‎

‎James Glaisher aeronaut and meteorologist. Two Unsigned Autograph Drafts: the first of Letter to ‘Mrs Wallis’ on ‘English legislation against Sunday trading’; the second with reference to the Fabian Society.‎

‎Draft of letter to 'Mrs Wallis': 18 May 1900. 50 Great Russell Street W.C. London offices of the Photographic Society of Great Britain. Other draft Fabian Society without date or place. See Glaisher’s entry in the Oxford DNB. The story of Glaisher’s balloon flights is travestied in the 2019 film ‘The Aeronaut’ with his co-pilot Henry Tracey Coxwell being replaced by the fictional female character ‘Amelia Wren’. The object of the ascents made on behalf of the British Association between 1862 and 1866 was to carry out scientific observations in such matters as the variation in temperature and humidity of the atmosphere at high elevations. On 5 September 1862 the coal-gas-filled balloonof Glaisher and Coxwell broke the world flight altitude record reaching 30000 to 36000 ft 9000 to 11000 m. The present items are unsigned autograph drafts from Glaisher’s papers both with deletions and emendations. ONE: Unsigned Autograph Draft of letter to ‘Mrs. Wallis’ from the offices of the Photographic Society of Great Britain of which Glaisher was President dated 18 May 1900. 4pp 12mo. On bifolium. In very good condition lightly aged. In answer to her letter he begins with a review of ‘English legislation against Sunday trading’ beginning with a reference to a statute of 1443. A bill being put before Parliament has ‘no chance of passing and will probably be withdrawn’ and ‘of course is a renewed attempt to introduce Sunday labor - which should be opposed tooth and nail’. TWO: Part of Unsigned Autograph Draft to unnamed recipient and without date or place. An intriguing fragment beginning: ‘So much for me. / Now for yourself. I am disappointed. You started out so splendidly. I want you to grow; to take the position which you ought if we are to get the best out of you.’ He urges the recipient to ‘get help: don’t rely on yourself quite so much’. Later he writes: ‘The Fabian Society has “principles†or it couldn’t hold together. You have “principles†- It is only a matter of expression’. Draft of letter to 'Mrs Wallis': 18 May 1900. 50 Great Russell Street, W.C. [London offices of the Photographic Society of Great unknown‎

‎Sir George Prothero Sir George Walter Prothero; Sir G. W. Prothero English historian editor of Quarterly Review Henry William‎

‎Sir George Prothero historian as editor of the Quarterly Review. Autograph Letter Signed ‘G. W. Prothero’ and dictated Manuscript Letter to Professor H. W. C. Davis regarding article on H. W. V. Temperley and Paris Peace Conference of 1919.‎

‎7 November 1921 and 30 March 1922; each on letterhead of The Quarterly Review 50A Albemarle Street London W.1. In addition to the entry for Prothero in the Oxford DNB see those of H. W. C. Davis 1874-1928 and H. W. V. Temperley 1879-1939 which reveal the interest all three had in the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. Both items in good condition lightly aged. Each folded once. Both addressed to 'Davis'. ONE: 7 November 1921. 4pp 12mo. Dictated and entirely including signature in the hand of an amanuensis. He is ‘delighted’ that Davis will be able to ‘write about Temperley & Co.’ Temperley published his six-volume account of the Conference between 1920 and 1924 and will be sending the books as soon as he can ‘get the American one which I have sent for’. He will also be sending the number of the Quarterly Review ‘containing Satow’s Art.’ He continues: ‘Temperly is certainly rather prickly & was annoyed with something in Satow’s paper & in the end I had to be rather short with him’. He thanks Davis for his enquiry after his health: ‘It is not good! but better than it was. I had to spend all last winter abroad which I did not like & not long after I got back I broke down again - but I am pulling round. You see this letter is not in my hand writing - but it saves time & trouble to dictate.’ His Chichele Lectures delivered in 1920 at Oxford ‘are really not fit for publication’: they ‘want a lot done’ but he hopes he ‘may be able to publish them some day’. In a postscript he sends belated congratulations to him on his professorship. TWO: 30 March 1922. 2pp. 12mo. Following on from Item One he begins by informing Davis that the article he agreed to write on the Paris Conference the previous November for publication that April is ‘too late for this number which is all in type & in page now but I shd. be glad to know if I may expect it for the July number.’ The fact that the article is late cannot be helped but as ‘there have been so many Conferences since that people have ceased to take an interest in Paris’ and he thinks the best way to treat the subject is ‘to bring it into connexion with the later Conferences showing how these have grown out of the Paris one & to confine oneself so far as the books are concerned to contrasting the views of Tardieu André Tardieu Clemenceau’s deputy at the conference & the Americans with the “official†- or semi-official - Temperley.’ He concludes: ‘I must not publish more than 6000 words at most on the subject & shd. prefer the art. to be shorter if possible.’ 7 November [1921] and 30 March 1922; each on letterhead of The Quarterly Review, 50A Albemarle Street, London, W.1. unknown‎

‎In another hand: ‘Written Oct 7. 1870.’ New York. During Lahrbush’s lifetime William John Thoms in his ‘Human Longevity’ 1873 described his claim to have been born in 1766 as ‘the most barefaced case of pretended centenarianism which has ever come under my notice’. ‘Capt. Lahrbush’ who claimed to have been born in 1766 ended his days in New York. He also claimed to have guarded Napoleon in St Helena and to have obbained a lock of Bonaparte’s hair there. In fact he was court-martialled for fraud in 1818 and sent as a convict to Australia. See Roberts and Roussac ‘Authenticating a Lock of Napoleon’s Hair: The Bizarre and Dubious Career of Frederick Lahrbush’ ‘The Gazette’ 2002 and the article on the Rollins College Archive website ‘Enough Hair to Carpet Versailles’ On 11.5 x 5 cm slip of paper laid down part of leaf from an album. The valediction reads ‘Yours alway faithfully / Arthur W. He feels that her ‘kind letter is all the more welcome inasmuch as it gives signs’ that she is recovering from her recent illness. ‘We have indeed been greatly concerned at the bad news we have heard of you. I hope that the present fine weather will set you up completely.’ He thanks her for what she says about his play ‘The Thunderbolt’: ‘I fear it is rather too serious an affair for the taste of the ordinary playgoer; but we shall see.’ He ends with ‘repeated acknowledgments’. 12 May 1908. ‎Clifford Bax [Clifford Lea Bax] (1886-1962), English playwright, poet, journalist and writer, brother of the composer Arnold Bax‎

‎Clifford Bax playwright and author. Autograph Letter Signed to Clifford Musgrave ‘Mr Muspratt’ regarding a lecture he gives in Brighton accompanied by the actress and model Meum Stewart.‎

‎14 and 24 February 1945. The first on letterhead of D2 Albany London W1; the second from the same Piccadilly address. See his entry and that of his brother in the Oxford DNB. The recipient Clifford Musgrave d.1993 Borough Librarian was instrumental in the saving and renovation of the Brighton Pavilion. Both items in good condition lightly aged. Both written in an elegant close calligraphic hand. The first is misaddressed to ‘Mr Muspratt’ and the second to ‘Mr. Musgrave’. Both signed ‘Clifford Bax’. ONE 14 February 1945: 2pp 16mo. Nineteen lines. Regarding the arrangements for a lecture he is going to give he has been asked by ‘Eric’ to communicate with him about his ‘Brighton visit’. As the letter of ‘Eric’ was ‘hurried and ambiguous’ he asks whether he has arranged for the actress and model ‘Miss Meum Steuart sic’ to stay at the ‘Old Ship’ or at ‘the Albion if it has been reopened’. He understands that ‘Eric’ will be joining them at their ‘little supper-party at the Ship after the lecture’. There is a possibility that ‘Mr. Leon M. Lion whom you probably know through Eric’ will be joining them. He thinks he has addressed him by his ‘true name it is quite familiar to me’ although he is in his address book as Clifford Musgrave. TWO 24 February 1945: 1p 12mo. Seventeen lines. Begins: ‘Dear Mr. Musgrave / I did enjoy my brief visit to Brighton . . . . that place of such happy memories for me. In 1935 I all-but took a flat no the sea-front: and as very small children we spent several holidays at a boarding-house in the Old Steyne. What is more I have always enjoyed the Pavilion because it speaks of a determination to make life gay.’ In addition Musgrave himself ‘came up to expectation. Indeed Miss Stewart and I when we were in the train lamented our poor chance of cultivating sombody so much to our liking’. Furthermore Bax ‘met’ Musgrave ‘this morning in the correspondence columns of the Lit: Supp: - a charming surprise’. In a postscript he expresses relief that the gout with which he is at present inflicted ‘postponed its visit till after my talk at Brighton!’ 14 and 24 February 1945. The first on letterhead of D2 Albany, London W1; the second from the same Piccadilly address. unknown‎

‎Sir Charles Oman [Sir Charles William Chadwick Oman] (1860-1946), English military historian and Librarian of All Souls College,‎

‎Sir Charles Oman military historian. Three Autograph Letters Signed all ‘C. W. C. Oman’ as Librarian of All Souls College to ‘Mr Harlow’ of Rhodes House Library regarding his proposal about ‘the long series of Cape Parliamentary proceedings’.‎

‎2 7 and 21 June 1937. All three on the letterhead of the Library of All Souls College Oxford. See Oman’s entry in the Oxford DNB. Each letter 1p 12mo. Each folded once. All three in good condition lightly aged. The correspondence concerns Harlow’s proposal according to the letter of 2 June 1937 ‘that All Souls College should present to the Rhodes House Library the comparatively few yearly numbers of the Cape Parliamentary proceedings 1875-1910 which are not already in either the Bodleian or the Rhodes House shelves - keeping for the College the residuence a broken set of about 200 volumes’. In the first letter Oman states that he will place the suggestion before the library committee adding ‘I must confess that it seems to me rather a crime from the point of view of a library to break a complete set. We shall perhaps be able to find some institution in London which would like the entire file’. He nevertheless sympathizes with Harlow’s ‘plea that a duplicate or almost duplicate set in your shelves would be a burden’. In the second letter he writes that he does ‘see the point’ of Harlow’s proposal: ‘avoidance of duplication’. In the last of the three letters which Oman signs ‘C. W. C. Oman / Librarian A. S. C.’ he informs Harlow that the library committee have voted ‘that it was prepared to present to the Rhodes House Library the volumes 1875-79 of the Cape Parliamentary reports and the odd numbers of Appendix 1 2. 3 and n7 of 1883 and 1 of Appendix II of the same year. The Committee intends to keep and dispense of the other volumes of the long set’. Harlow is invited to send for the Rhodes House volumes. 2, 7 and 21 June 1937. All three on the letterhead of the Library of All Souls College, Oxford. unknown‎
