John Farleigh, prob. [Frederick William Charles Farleigh] (1900-1965), English wood engraver [George Bernard Shaw]:
John Farleigh wood engraver. Wood-engraving of naked black girl with African man with garland of flowers around his groin in same style as those for Bernard Shaw's 'Adventures of the Black Girl in her Search for God'. Apparently unpublished.
Place and date not stated. London circa 1932. Printed in black on one side of piece of 33 x 20 cm thick paper full page containg image 20 x 13cm. Dimensions of print 23 x 13.5 cm largest image in book 15 x 9.5cm . In good condition on lightly aged and creased paper with slight foxing. The image depicts: on the left and extending the height of the print an athletically-built black man naked but for wreaths of flowers across his brow and his groin penis and scrotum evident leaning forward to proffer a flower to a naked black girl the "Black Girl in Search" 17cm high viewed from the back whose left arm is raised while her right is behind her back holding a flower. According to Farleigh's entry in the Oxford DNB he 'achieved wide acclaim and recognition for his illustrations to The Adventures of the Black Girl in her Search for God written by George Bernard Shaw and published by Constable in 1932. Shaw commissioned Farleigh after requesting a trial drawing and was closely involved in the designs. Farleigh duly acknowledged Shaw's input in his partly autobiographical work Graven Image 1940 where he gave a detailed account of the progress of the book. Shaw's witty satirical text and Farleigh's quasi-erotic depictions of the African girl ‘a fine creature whose satin skin and shining muscles made the missionary folk seem like ashen ghosts’ Shaw The Black Girl 1932 8 guaranteed its success. The first edition of 25000 copies priced inexpensively at 2s. 6d. was sold immediately. This was the first mass-produced book of the period to contain wood-engravings and it was effective in popularizing the medium for commercial book illustration as well as for the private presses.' No information has been found concerning this woodcut in Farleigh's "Graven Image" or elsewhere but one reviewer found "sexual symbolism" which he didn't know if Farleigh was aware of ! "Graven Image" p.268. Recalling how a character in "Happy Days" set in the 'fifties could only find images of naked or near naked women in National Geographic African scenes could "Adventures" have provided pin-ups suited to its era! But the naked black man may have been a step too far. Any information welcome. White space of image on file slightly clipped. Place and date not stated. [London, circa 1932.] unknown

[Henry Labouchere [Henry Du Pre Labouchere] (1831-1912), English politician, writer and theatre owner, proprietor of the satiric
'Truth' Victorian satirical magazine edited by Horace Voules and owned by Henry Labouchère. Spoof share prospectus for the flotation of 'The British Empire Unlimited' with 'Memorandum of Association'.
'Supplement to "Truth" Christmas Number December 25 1898.' Printed by Love & Wyman Ltd. Great Queen Street London W.C. 4pp. folio. Originally on a bifolium but now with the two leaves separated and attached to a white stub from an album. In good condition on aged and lightly-spotted paper and trimmed at the head. Laid out in the conventional manner With the reverse of the final leaf printed in landscape so that the item can be folded into the customary package. The same page carries the 'Memorandum of Association' in small print including 24 lettered 'objects for which the Company is established' including 'v To acquire the right to levy taxes on Bicycles Piano-Organs Musical-Evenings Wagners "Ring" Flashing Street Advertisements Motor-Cars Lord Mayor's Shows Public Statues Matinee Hats Minor Poets "Bloomers" Light Tenors Professional Beauties Golfers Drawing-room Receiters and Money-lenders.' The document begins with an Iinitial list of directors and other company officers followed by the 'Prospectus' proper beginning: 'THIS Company has been formed to acquire as a going concern the old-established business of the BRITISH EMPIRE which deals in Colonies Armies Ironclads Law Making Treaty Ports Coaling Stations Post Offices Telegraphs Telephones Public Education Criminal Prosecutions Pioneering Fighting Massacring Civilising Concession Granting Prospecting Mission Founding &c. &c. and is believed to be the largest of its kind in the World.' The prospectus continues in the same vein with a list of the 'principal Foreign Agencies of the business' from Aden to Zanzibar adding: 'In addition to the properties enumerated above the Company will acquire from the Vendors "spheres of influence" in all parts of the world.' References follow to 'the important asset known as the Suzerainty of the South African Republic' 'the "Open Door" situate in the Chinese Empire' 'prospecting expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic Regions' and other international affairs. There is also a description of the state of the books by 'Messrs. Olde Turk & Co.' C. R. Harrison in his 'House of Harrison' 1914 explains the context of the satire: 'The twenty-second Christmas number of Truth devoted itself to a clever political satire entitled "The British Empire Unlimited." Truth is before all things Liberal in its politics and the aim of the satire was to poke fun and ridicule at the then Conservative Government the author especially attacking the Marquis of Salisbury who was Prime Minister on the ground of his wide Imperial Policy and satirizing his well-known ability for administration and attention to detail. The story represents Lord Salisbury bringing out a gigantic Commercial Company entitled "The British Empire Unlimited" to run the affairs of the nation on a commercial basis; he being Promoter and Director and the other members of the Government and celebrities of the day each having his allotted post. The prospectus like that of other commercial undertakings was full of bold advertisement and was prepared confidentially with a view to bursting on the public attention as a surprise.' 'Supplement to "Truth" Christmas Number, December 25, 1898.' Printed by Love & Wyman, Ltd., Great Queen Street, London, W.C. unknown

Professor of English Shelton Waldrep
The Space of Sex: The Porn Aesthetic in Contemporary Film and Television
Paperback / softback. New. As film and television become ever more focused on the pornographic gaze of the camera the human body undergoes a metamorphosis becoming both landscape and building part of an architectonic design in which the erotics of the body spread beyond the body itself to influence the design of the film or televisual shot. The body becomes the mise-en-scène of contemporary moving imagery. Opening <i>The Space of Sex</i> Shelton Waldrep sets up some important tropes for the book: the movement between high and low art; the emphasis on the body looking and framing; the general intermedial and interdisciplinary methodology of the book as a whole. <i>The Space of Sex</i>âs second half focuses on how sex gender and sexuality are represented in several recent films including Paul Schraderâs <i>The Canyons</i> 2013 Oliver Stoneâs <i>Savages </i>2012 Steven Soderberghâs <i>Magic Mike</i> 2012 Lars Von Trierâs <i>Nymphomaniac </i>2013 and Joseph Gordon-Levittâs <i>Don Jon </i>2013. Each of these mainstream or independent movies and several more are examined for the ways they have attempted to absorb pornography if not the pornography industry specifically into their plot. According to Waldrep the utopian elements of seventies porn get reprocessed in a complex way in the twenty-first century as both a utopian impulseâthe desire to have sex on the screen to re-eroticize sex as something positive and lacking in shameâwith a mixed feeling about pornography itself with an industry that can be seen in a dystopian light. In other words sex in our contemporary world still does not come without compromise. paperback

(HERBALS, ENGLISH). HILL, SIR JOHN
THE FAMILY HERBAL
Bungay: C. Brightly and Co. and T. Kinnersley 1812. Sixth Edition. 215 x 133 mm. 8 1/2 x 5 1/4". viii xl 376 pp. <br/> Sympathetic light speckled half calf over marbled paper boards raised bands red and black morocco labels. With 54 hand-colored plates including frontispiece illustrating plants discussed in the text. A couple of ink corrections in a contemporary hand. Johnston 760. â—†Variable foxing with perhaps a fourth of the text noticeably foxed but the plates almost entirely unaffected a few stains to the gutter from pressed flowers now absent other trivial defects but a perfectly readable copy with quite attractive plates in a pleasing virtually unworn retrospective binding.<br/> <br/> First published as "The Useful Family Herbal" in 1764 this popular work provides a description of British plants helpful for at-home remedies. The highlight of the volume is the well-drawn and richly colored plates which Nissen tells us were drawn by the important natural history illustrator Sydenham Edwards 1769-1819 whose work DNB describes as "among the best scientific illustrations of the day." Hill 1716-75 was a perplexingly self-destructive personality who nevertheless managed to produce useful books. He was a surgeon an unsuccessful actor and an apothecary who made considerable money selling quack medicines; he published several books including some botanical works of substantial value like the present one and a steady series of usually abusive periodicals; he was constantly scheming to make money and to raise his reputation above its rightful altitude; and he was always embroiled in controversies because of his ungovernable proclivity toward impertinence and derision as well as his overweening vanity. This last quality together with Hill's direct attacks on Garrick and his friends prompted the latter's memorable epigram reflecting the doctor/actor's reputation among his detractors: "For physic and farces his equal there scarce is:/ His farces are physic his physic a farce is." After publishing some not insignificant scientific writings including a supplement to Chambers' "Dictionary" Hill tried to obtain admission to the Royal Society but his unprincipled character blocked any hope of membership. Despite his reputation "The Family Herbal" offered here in its sixth edition was obviously viewed as serious and significant enough to be reprinted a half century and later after its first appearance.
