<p> Pope Gregory has been eulogized as "one of the most notable figures in Ecclesiastical History. He has exercised in many respects a momentous influence on the doctrine the organization and the discipline of the Catholic Church. To him we must look for an explanation of the religious situation of the Middle Ages: indeed if no account were taken of his work the evolution of the form of mediaeval Christianity would be almost inexplicable. And further in so far as the modern Catholic system is a legitimate development of mediaeval Catholicism of this too Gregory may not unreasonably be termed the Father. Almost all the leading principles of the later Catholicism are found at any rate in germ in Gregory the Great." Dudden Gregory the Great I p. v His Homilies on the Gospels were a series of instructions made to the faithful on the chief texts of the Gospels read in church throughout the liturgical year. These forty sermons first preached in 591-92 at the beginning of his papacy were extremely popular and were among the most widely read and highly venerated texts of the Middle Ages. Some 400 medieval manuscripts of the homilies survive and they were frequently printed beginning in 1473. Because Gregory illustrated dogma with numerous examples drawn from life the text contains significant anecdotes regarding Gregory himself and contemporary events at a trying time when Rome and Italy were subjected to flooding pestilence Lombard invasions and the death of Pope Pelagius II. The present leaf contains the end of Homily 12 and the beginning of Homily 13 which opens midway on the verso.</p> [cEngland: c1160].

21st Aug. circa 1850. 1850. Good. - sc 12mo 5-1/4 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide. 25 words penned in black ink on a small piece of cream stock. Signed "Wm H. Callcott'. The letter is slightly soiled. It has been mounted on card stock & remnants of gray mounting paper adhere to the card where the letter has been removed from an album. Folded twice for mailing. Very good. <p>Callcott thanks a gentleman for his kind note and writes that he will call on him the following morning.<p>William Hutchins Callcott 1807-1882 studied music under his father Dr. John Wall Calcott and his brother-in-law William Horsley. He composed numerous works for the piano as well as glees songs and anthems. He was organist at Ely Place Chapel for a time and later for sixteen years at St. Barnabas' Church Kensington London. 21st Aug., circa [1850]. unknown

Glasgow Scotland: Nov. 3. 1848. 1848. Very good. - 79 words penned in black ink on 2-1/3 sides of a folded sheet of stock 7 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide. Dated "Nov. 3. 1848" and signed "John Hullah". Remnants of gray paper adhere to the 4th blank side where the letter has been removed from an album. Folded twice for mailing. Very good. <p>Hullah's letter addressed to G. L. Craik is written from Queen's Hotel Glasgow. His home address in London is printed on the fourth blank side of what is evidently his personalized letterhead. Hullah urges Craik to purchase a piano in his absence; "Read the enclosed not present addressed to a first-rate man at Broadwoods'. If you approve take it there & ask for him. He will do all that is needed -- quite as well as / Yours Ever Truly / John Hullah".<p>John Pyke Hullahh 1812-1884 was an English composer and music teacher. His compositions which remained popular for some years after his death were mainly ballads though he also composed three operas in the 1830s including one to words by Dickens "The Village Coquette". More important perhaps was his commitment to popularizing musical education. He was appointed musical inspector of British training schools in 1872 and in 1878 he went abroad to study the condition of musical education in foreign schools writing a valuable report on his return. Though his success was limited by his strenuous opposition to the Tonic Sol-Fa system the value of his work lay in his emphasis on demanding high artistic standards of the music taught and studied.<p>The recipient of the letter was George Lillie Craik a Scottish writer and literary critic. John Broadwood & Sons to whom Hullah directs him is one of the oldest and most prestigious piano companies in the world. Glasgow [Scotland]: Nov. 3., 1848. unknown
