Tennyson forgery: Alfred Lord Tennyson, one of the greatest of English poets, Poet Laureate to Queen Victoria:
Tennyson forgery: manuscript document presenting itself as a letter from Alfred Lord Tennyson to the wife of William Ewart Gladstone agreeing to a visit as long as he can smoke his pipe.
Stated to have been sent from 'Aldworth / Oct 25 - 76'. 25 October 1876. An apparent forgery of a letter the text of which is quoted in Hallam Tennyson’s 1897 memoir of his father. 1p 12mo. On discoloured wove paper. Aged and with repair with archival tape at extremities on reverse. Folded twice for postage. Reads: ‘Aldworth / Oct 25 - 76 / My dear Mrs Gladstone / On Monday then - if all be well. As you are good enough to say that you will manage everything rather than lose my visit - you must manage that I may have my pipe in my own room whenever I like / Yours ever / A Tennyson/’. The supposed provenance is noted in pencil on the reverse: ‘This letter was written by Alfred Lord Tennyson to Mrs. Gladstone in 1876. Purchased from Noel Conway of New St Birmingham in 1900 by / Samuel Englefield / Henley on Thames.’ The present text differs from Hallam Tennyson’s version also in the third volume of Lang and Shannon by reading ‘you must’ rather than ‘will you’ - the latter reading also featuring in the facsimile of the letter in the Strand Magazine 1892 among the illustrations to J. Holt Schooling’s article on ‘The Handwriting of Alfred Lord Tennyson’ the caption stating that the letter ‘is in the possession of Messrs. Noel Conway 50B New Street Birmingham’. See Image. Dorrington. 1p 12mo. The address to ‘Dear Mr. Dorrington’ and signature ‘Peter Pears’ are in autograph; the rest is typed. Written while Britten is dying. Reads: ‘Benjamin Britten wishes me to thank you for your kind message. He hopes you will understand that it is not possible for him to answer you himself.’ In envelope with Saxmundham postmark dated 22 November 1976 addressed in Pears’s autograph to ‘Douglas C Dorrington Esq / 9 Chatsworth Rd / Croydon / Surrey’. Loosely inserted is a stapled pamphlet 8pp 12mo with drophead heading ‘Peter Pears / Benjamin Britten / Text of the Songs’. Entirely composed of texts of 22 songs some in German and French with the last four ‘arr. BENJAMIN BRITTEN’. Also present is an envelope only with stamps and Saxmundham postmark of 20 July 1976 addressed to ‘GEORGE BEHREND / FLIQUET / JERSEY / CHANNEL ISLES.’ Not in Pears’s elegant hand and with a distinctive capital ‘Q’ dead vertical downstroke. Whether written out by Britten or not is unclear but annotated in another hand ‘Last letter of any sort from Ben on becoming Lord Britten.’ I stress that there is no letter surviving. See Image. Otherwise in good condition lightly aged. Folded. Wolfestan's letter is 'capital' and he hopes he will send it 'as it exactly backs up my own statement'. On thte previous day he saw and responded to 'the letter of G Roberts': 'the fact is that in the lecture itself I spoke of the scientific theories & said that although they were deeply interesting they were of little use to painters who had to deal with pigments or paints and not with those elements of light which cause the various sensations to the red-seeing or gree-seeing or violet seeing nerves'. He considers the 'report in the Builder' 'very imperfect and disjointed made by an utter ass' and he does not think there is 'a single sentence in it that I could fairly say is mine'. If he publishes the lecture he will send it to him. Returning to Wolfestan's letter he finds that it 'will go far to explain the difference between artists and scientists on the subject of colour'. LETTER TWO to Mrs A'Beckett': 3pp 12mo. Bifolium on grey paper. Damp staining on blank reverse of second leaf otherwise in good condition. He and his wife were looking forward to her 'at home' but could not attend because he had to write a memoir of his brother-in-law whose death took place the day after he saw her. 'It was for 'The Magazine of Art' and of couse was wanted immediately in fact almost by return of post and I could not get it finished till late last evening.' Bound in Art-Deco-style black-and-white boards with printed label and complete in the scarce original dust wrapper. Both the label and the wrapper are decorated with the Dominican Hound and motto: "Laudare Benedicere Praedicare" "To Praise to Bless and to Preach" from the Dominican Missal Preface of the Blessed Virgin Mary. <br /><br />The English Province of the Dominicans was "ordered by His Holiness Pope Pius XI to hold celebrations in honour of the Sixth Centenary of the Canonisation of St. Thomas Aquinas." The Dominicans responded by organizing festivities at the University of Manchester from May 26-May 31 1924. The lectures consisted of an inaugural address delivered by Professor T.F. She has heard 'such a sad account' of the recipient and hopes she is 'quite well & fit again now'. The Dearmers 'couldn't manage Paris but we should have loved it - There has been so much - boys' holidays & my book & now another new play! I am sending you "Gervase" - I always think of correcting the proofs at Alnmouth and the sunshine there - & your little red cap with the tassel!' She asks if 'Mrs. Erskine' is 'still in Paris' and reports that she 'went down to Wimbledon' the previous Monday 'and had a heavenly day in the sunshine at Elmley house' home of Earl Beauchamp. Inscribed at top left-hand corner of title-page: 'To my friend Sir Courtenay Mansel with kindest regards from Julius Harrison Oct. 26th. 1920'. Moore's poem is printed on the reverse of the first leaf and facing it on the recto of the second leaf is the score. On the reverse of the second leaf is a 'Revised List' of 'The Enoch Art Song Library' with the date of issue 'June 1920.' at bottom left. There is no copy of this edition in the National Library of Ireland. The only copies on COPAC are at the British Library the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music. Text: "I was glad to get your letter of 8th August and must apologise for my delay in answering it. I was just then caught up into a confusion of work. I telephoned Mr Leventhal he doesnt live in Woodbury but in Boston; however we are in touch and he was delighted at his good fortune in acquiring a copy of my FARMER'S YEAR. It is now very rare … By the way there is at the moment a three month retrospective of my work at the Boston Public Library with an illustrated--partially so - catalogue which is a true catalogue raisonne. If you are interested I will send you a copy. I have had several special editions I have illustrated and last year for the Bicentennial I did a book for the Book Club of California called GROWING NEW ROOTS. It was alas available only to members. The blocks of THE FARMER'S YEAR belong to me and I have a limited signed edition of the prints from the book which are for sale. They are nearing their end I fear. And as the Boston exhibition goes from there to San Francisco for three months and then to Los Angeles I think they will be sought after. I have often been asked if I sell the actual blocks. So far I have resisted it though I have given some to one or two universities. But always I cancel them with an engraved line obliquely across them. Yes I most certainly have engravings for sale. As a result of the various exhibitions I have been having my market is good. By the way I am glad you think so highly of the work of George Mackley. I consider him exceptionally fine There is very little wood engraving being done over here in America. I think it is because it is a tedious lengthy medium so that you cant get rich quickly! And dear David Jones! I was very fond of him when lived in England. It is so good to see he is at last being recognised. When I hear from you I will send you my dossier and the Boston catalogue." Ozzie ….Enjoy the reading XOXO</strong>. </p><p>Indian revolts in the province of Chimborazo Ecuador destroyed the family and goods of the rancher Juan Domingo Orosco as revenge for the maltreatment and abuse of the savages. After this unfortunate event Orosco converted and became a missionary priest who worked among the oriental tribes. He was always accompanied by his son Carlos who became very fond of a young Indian beauty named Cumandá. She saved the young white man's life in several situations. Finally she agreed to become the wife of the chief of the Jibaros Yahuarmaqui so the Jivaros would spare her beloved Carlos's life. At the end of this masterpiece we find out that Cumandá is the daughter of Juan Domingo Orosco and that she didn't die when his ranch was destroyed thanks to the protection of Pona wife of the chief of the Paloras. As it turns out Cumandá was raised in the jungle by one of the Indian tribes. Cumandá dies sacrificed according to the customs of the tribe; Father Orosco reconciles with his enemy Tongana and helps him to die as a Christian and the loss of his daughter ends the life of purity Father Orosco had vowed to uphold.</p><p><strong>Insurance & handling is included free.
