Frank Marcham. Two typewritten drafts of an annotated list of nearly 500 'Auction Sales made by Robert Harding Evans'; with autograph notes on Evans and on his own collection with typescript titled 'Literary History and local topography'.
Place and date not stated. London. Begun in the 1920s. Robert Harding Evans has been described as 'the greatest of all auctioneers of literary property'. In a career spanning three decades he oversaw the dispersal of many of the finest libraries ever assembled from the great Roxburghe sale of 1812 to that of the Duke of Sussex in 1845 as well as those of the books of Lord Byron and the manuscripts and copyrights of Sir Walter Scott. In an undated letter to Bodley's Librarian copy in Item Four below Marcham states that he is 'working on Evans the auctioneer and the list will be published. The British Museum possess nearly all of the auctioneers' own set and I will put the references in. I would like also to make it a check list of the Bodleian'. That work was not published but the annotated typescripts of it that are Items One and Two below do constitute a valuable supplement to M. V. de Chantilly's 'provisional list' of Evans's catalogues 2002. The seven items in the present collection are all in fair condition on aged and worn paper. ONE and TWO: Two copies of the typescript of Marcham's 'A COMPLETE LIST in chronological order of AUCTION SALES made by ROBERT HARDING EVANS'. Both 188pp. foolscap 8vo paginated 1-185 unpaginated 31 and double paginations of 41 and 66. Both copies on loose leaves in white folders. One copy with variants of pp.26 37 and 79 and the other with two variant copies of p.4 one page adding the 1813 Byron catalogue and one extra copy of p.186. Both with numerous and largely different annotations in pencil and ink. Marcham lists 461 amended in one catalogue to 460 catalogues between 1812 the Roxburghe sale and 1844 Richard Roberts DD of St Paul's School. At the end of one of the copies is a continuation 5p. 4to of the typescript adding eleven more catalogues which bring the list up to 471 the Upcott sale. In addition to the title date and number of pages Marcham provides biographical information regarding the consignor including quotations from wills and other sources and notes on the background of sales as well as giving details and shelfmarks of copies in various libraries. He also provides comments on various catalogues and transcriptions of manuscript notes from Evans's own set of the catalogues now in the British Library which as Marcham explains in the note above forms the backbone of his work. Marcham's researches were unknown to M. V. de Chantilly and they supplement the information given by him. A typical note on the three known copies of the 1813 Byron catalogue reads 'One sold by Elkin Mathews Ld of Conduit Street W now Grosvenor St. to a collector in the United States another in their own possession and the third in private hands. See reproduction of title page. J. M. is John Murray.' A photograph reproducing the title page of the Byron catalogue with the note by Murray is present and there are occasional notes on various pieces of paper loosely inserted. THREE: Miscellaneous papers including autograph notes 10pp. 4to towards an essay on Robert Harding Evans written on the backs of envelopes mostly in pencil. With emendations. These notes begin: 'In dealing with book collecting it is usual to speak in terms of currency yet nothing is more misleading.' Marcham proceeds to discuss the 'eighteenth century collectors' before turning to his subject: 'Book-collecting ceased to be a "fashion" just about the time of Evans' commencement as an auctioneer. It was upon the aftermath that his prosperity depended. He sold many famous collections but he did not help to make others. No doubt he was a great auctioneer and a worthy follower of Samuel Paterson which may be the result of happy influence upon impressionable matter. When necessary his cataloguing was excellent for its purpose and taking the whole of his work I hardly think it has been equalled.' The piece includes the following interesting comment: 'There are men in England possessed of more money than Huntington and there are more in the United States and men interested in book collecting. Mr Huntington was a collector that is all. Men who are at the mercy of their butler and housekeeper & chauffeur take pride that they are not at the mercy of book dealers. Certain people collect wisely they are great men in commercial life and training stands them in good stead. Currency is not of the value now that it was twenty years ago or a hundred but even so the relative price of books of certain kinds has always increased.' He expounds on the economics of bookselling comparing 'the book market in the United States to day with that of England'. Returning to Evans he discusses the incidence of 'fine paper editions' of his catalogues and transcribes a passage about the auctioneer from Roberts's 'Book Hunter in London'. Together with this batch of notes is an autograph copy 2pp. 12mo of a letter by Marcham to Bodley's Librarian asking him to 'fill in your references to Bodley's holdings of Evans catalogues under those I give for the British Museum' and a typescript 1p. foolscap 8vo of a biographical piece on William Upcott. The final item in this bundle is a printed British Museum Reading Room 'ticket of application' filled in by Marcham in 1928 ordering 'Evans MS List'. FOUR and FIVE: Two copies of a typescript titled 'Literary History and local topography and their sources. By Frank Marcham'. 6pp. 8vo. With minor autograph corrections. Apparently unpublished. The theme is stated at the outset: 'There is an intimate relation between these matters that has been very much neglected. A general knowledge of the Dictionary of National Biography will give some idea of the divorce that exists between real knowledge of sources and practical use of such and actual performance. This is a defect of education in England. There is no University that can produce students qualified in the matter of knowing the original sources of local history which means that no graduate can grasp what he knows nothing about.' SIX: Page of typescript describing 'the nineteenth century slump' in the British booktrade. 1p. 8vo. Part of a longer piece. Begins: 'Thomas Thorpe who had been a great dealer and buyer and assigned his stock to pay his debts in 1826 and it was sold in several auctions. Then followed the Drury Dent Parr Renouard Earl of Guildford Hibbert Ord Rennie Sir Walter Scott manuscripts Thorpe bought two Hanrott the insolvent solicitor Haslewood who had a faked Robinson Crusoe now in the British Museum Leman and Caley sales.' Ends: 'One effect of the nineteenth century slump was that the dealers degenerated and degenerate dealers get results they deserve. Not one dealer or two could lift the business to dignity. From what we learn of the rare book dealers of the nineteenth century they must have been as brutal and .'. SEVEN: Typed transcript of an index of 'Book Sales by R. H. With extensive autograph emendations. The second paragraph of three reads: 'The SABC English Service had invited me to make a short series of broadcasts. This was followed later by a second series; and after that it was suggested that I should present regular weekly broadcasts on astronomical topics. There have been many requests for copies of these talks and the present book has grown out of them. Obviously they have been modified and some of the essentially topical but now outdated references have been removed; but I hope they present a varied and perhaps historical account of events during 1972 a momentous year in astronomical progress.' FOUR to EIGHT: Five Typed Letters Signed all 'Patrick' from Moore to 'Dear David' - H. David Lloyd of the South African Boradcasting Corporation Johannesburg. Totalling six pages. The correspondence concerns the preparation of the talks for publication. In the first letter 11 November 1972 he writes: 'I dropped everything and did my best. I have amended the articles to make them untopical . I have added a Foreword and I have managed to scrape up a picture for each talk.' On 27 November 1972 he writes that he is 'off to America on Monday for Apollo 17 but have arranged two sessions at the BBC this week before I go. I will therefore be well ahead. Wish I could do one direct from Cape kennedy; but it's too risky'. A letter of 15 January 1973 largely devoted to the 'mystery' of tapes of talks despatched by the BBC which have not arrived in South Africa has as postscript: 'Forgive typing. I am used to a 1908 machine and the BBC one is modern!' On 23 January 1973 he asks if anything came of 'the book of the talks As you know I rushed it through before I went to America in December because I gathered it was needed before Christmas; but I haven't heard another thing!! I'd be most grateful if you'd let me know; and if you are NOT publishing them after all I'd be glad to have them back because someone else is very interested in doing them Reid's.' In the last letter 5 February 1973 he discusses the talks expresses relief at the arrival of the tapes and pleasure at the news about the book. He concludes: 'I do hope to see you again this year. I have the pleasantest possible memories of South Africa!' NINE: Autograph Card Signed 'P' by Moore. 11 November 1972. With his Farthings letterhead. He is 'Off to New York for a conference' and has airmailed 'all illustrations . with long letter i.e. Item Four'. 'Back to Selsey on Nov. 24. Have recorded well ahead of course and am recording again on the 26th.' TEN: Typed Note on BBC letterhead from C. Bunyan for Pat Wood of General Features Television. 14 November 1972. 'Patrick Moore has asked me to send you this slide of Tycho's statue for the book.' ELEVEN: Copy of Typed Letter from Lloyd to Moore 'Productions Organiser English Service'. 31 January 1973. In Dobson's brightest style the poem begins: 'Not from the ranks of those we call Philosopher or Admiral - Neither as LOCKE was nor as BLAKE Is that GREAT GENIUS for whose sake We keep this Autumn festival.' Fielding is praised as 'Our ENGLISH NOVEL's pioneer!' who 'stepped lower down and took The piebald PEOPLE for his Book!' In what is perhaps the most vivid passage Dobson writes: 'Whose are the characters that give Such sound reality - that live With such full pulse Fair SOPHY yet Carols St. George at the spinet; We see AMELIA cooking still That supper for the recreant WILL; We hear Squire WESTON's headlong tones Bawling "Wut ha - wut ha" to JONES. [Eighteenth-century English manuscript ballad; Georgian popular poetry]:
Eighteenth-century ballad. Manuscript of untitled poem beginning 'Ere ye. read ys. ye. may suppose. That some new listed Lover. By means of Poetry has chose. His Passion to discover.'
Early eighteenth century. Another later version published in the Gentleman's Magazine London May 1744. 2pp. on both sides of a strip of 35.5 x 11.5 cm laid paper with fleur-de-lys watermark. In a secretary hand employing the thorn and long s. In fair condition on aged and worn paper. An untitled forty-line poem divided into five numbered eight-line stanzas. The narrator is an older married woman advising a younger woman not to marry with observations on the frailties of the male sex. The first stanza reads: 'Ere ye. read ys. ye. may suppose. That some new listed Lover. By means of Poetry has chose. His Passion to discover. Know Faire one I am a Matron Grave Which Time & Care has wasted And would thy Youth from sorrow save Which I have in Wedlock tasted.' A variation of the poem was published in the Gentleman's Magazine May 1744 with the title 'The MATRON's Advice to a YOUNG LADY A new BALLAD. Tune Sally.' The grammar of the Gentleman's Magazine version is more modern in tone its first line reading: 'Ere you read this you may suppose' and the variations are most apparent in the third stanza including 'Beset thy dwelling' in the published version for 'Surround thy Threshold' in the manuscript; 'heedless' for 'regardless'; 'Pass all your minutes' for 'Thy Moments pass on'; 'While flames are offer'd at our shrine And Men like Idols sue us' for 'Darts flames & hoards adorn Our shrine And Awful Hymen woo us.' The writer has begun to write another poem on the reverse of the slip: 'Come lesten sic ye tories & jacobites now Your Plot <.> shew'. Not present in the English Broadside Ballad Archive. Roy Fuller poet. Three Typed Letters Signed and two Autograph Letters Signed the first 'Roy Fisher' and the other four 'Roy' to the literary scholar Miriam Allott regarding an edition of the collected poems of her late husband Kenneth Allott.
All five on his letterhead 37 Langton Way London SE3 7TJ. 26 May 12 and 17 July and 10 and 20 August 1973. Each letter 1p. 8vo. In very good condition lightly aged and worn. The first two letters in autograph the other three typed. ONE 26 May 1973: He condoles with her on her husband's death. 'I always greatly admired his poetry & then his work as a critic. I've just been writing down hisname in the index of my second book of Oxford lectures where I refer briefly to both these activities of his. It is a sad loss particularly to those of us who admire creative & sensitive scholarship so rare & so much needed now. He & I never met - you remember how we were thwarted when I came to Liverpool three or four years ago. That will be a constant matter of regret to me.' TWO 12 July 1973: He 'would be honoured to write a foreword to the poems' and offers his help if 'the Liverpool. University. Press. baulk at doing the book': 'There is always the possibility of an Arts Council grant to a publisher'. He hopes she will be 'able to make another book or books even of a miscellaneous kind. The question of fulfilment or non-fulfilment of talent is not straightforward. Sometimes the talent is fulfilled unbeknown to itself particularly with those who refuse to exaggerate their gifts. J. R. Ackerley is a good example. Everything I saw of Kenneth's was individual & true. There is no rubbish - as there is with most of us! - to drop away out of an inflated picture.' THREE 17 July 1973: He urges her to produce an edition of her husband's complete poems and suggests individuals to approach Charles Monteith 'T. G. Rosenthal of Secker & Warburg' 'lordly Fabers' and Carcanet Press 'doing some excellent things'. FOUR 10 August 1973: 'Anthony Thwaite who advises Secker & Warburg on their poetry list is interested in Kenneth's collected poems. . No thanks are due to me! Thwaite asked for a poem for Enounter's 20th anniversary number and I sent him the only suitable one I had - one written recently which I've dedicated to Kenneth's memory.' FIVE 20 August 1973: He has heard from Thwaite who 'wants to see the complete MS but I think one can say firmly that he will recommend to Secker that they do a Collected Poems. . One can never be absolutely sure about the destiny of a book of poems but I am quite hopeful'. The letter concludes: 'Can't imagine why I mentioned Faber in previous letters. I should have said Hogarth.' Secker & Warburg did indeed publish Kenneth Allott's 'Collected Poems' with a 'Foreword' by Fisher in 1975. London: George Eyre and Andrew Strahan 1823. 142 x 83 mm. 5 1/2 x 3 1/8". 22 510 pp. 1 leaf blank 81 1 pp. <br/> VERY ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY RED STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO BY RUSSELL'S OF GUILDFORD their ticket on front pastedown covers with central sunburst medallion containing the Tetragrammaton within a triangle from which the dove of the Holy Spirit descends surrounded by a blind-tooled roll and multiple gilt rules foliate cornerpieces raised bands gilt-ruled compartments with floral cornerpieces gilt-rolled turn-ins all edges gilt. Housed in a very nice felt-lined cloth folding box with red morocco back gilt lettering. For the binding: Ramsden p. 144. A little soiling to leather and a couple of trivial imperfections internally but a very fine copy inside and out.<br/> <br/> This pretty little prayer book is a lovely example of provincial English bookbinding and very typical of an era in which such luxurious volumes were popular gifts among the moneyed classes. The Russell firm is recorded by Ramsden as operating in Guildford in southern England and the ticket in the present book notes that they were also booksellers stationers printers cutlers and silversmiths in addition to binders. This charming devotional work has been carefully looked after by its previous owners and comes down to us in excellent condition. George Eyre and Andrew Strahan unknown

Leica Darkroom Practice: The Focomat Manual

The next step for those who have newly discovered the art of taking film as opposed to digital photos is to develop and print the photos themselves instead of sending the exposed film off to a laboratory. One of the more cost-effective ways to do that is to buy used equipment for one’s own personal darkroom. But then how do you learn how to use that equipment Why by buying used equipment guides and manuals of course - such as this one “Leica Darkroom Practice: The Focomat Manual†published in 1983. The Ernst Leitz GmbH optical company had the revolutionary idea to create a compact camera that would use refined lenses to create small negatives that could be enlarged into large prints in the darkroom; before this film was the same size as the final image which meant the cameras that held and exposed the film were even larger often making them quite heavy and unwieldy. But the Leitz company’s resulting Leica line of cameras which started to be produced in the 1920s could almost be tucked into a pocket and before long their lenses could be easily changed out according to the photographer’s needs. In the 1930s the Leitz company also began producing the Focomat line of enlargers equipped with other Leica lenses to finish the process of getting the photograph from the snap of the shutter to a frame on the wall or a print waiting for publication. This book guides users not only through the specifics of how to use the popular Leica Focomat equipment but also about darkroom practices in general.<br /> <br /> The manual was originally published in Germany since Ernst Leitz GmbH was a German company; the copyright page says this is the “First Edition Englishâ€. The English version was published by Hove Foto Books a respected British publisher that specialized in technical works for photographers with different distributors in the U.S. and the U.K. This edition is a casebound book with laminated covers and without dust jacket as published. The back cover features photographs from the book itself while the front cover is decorated with a more stylized image of a Focomat enlarger. The textblock is still standing up well and is tight and square with no missing or loose pages. There are no marks or writing on any of the pages nor any tears or folds. There is some slight shelf wear on the cover particularly along the top and bottom of the spine and some wrinkles in the lamination but overall this is a solid useful and attractive copy. The Thai epic folk poem Khun Chang Khun Phan a romantic adventure has had input over the centuries by various illustrious poets including Sunthorn Phu as well as several members of Thai royalty. Its origins however may date back to the medieval Ayutthaya period and was also possibly based on actual lives. It remains immensely popular to the present day. The present two volume précis was the first rendering of the epic into English. Book One 1955: DJ lightly soiled. All pages tanned a few pages have minor edge tears and losses not effecting text.
