No date or place. The claim that Benjamin Jowett reported Senior as saying that ‘the famine of 1848 in Ireland would not kill more than a million people and that would scarcely be enough to do much good’ appears to have been made up by Cecil Woodham-Smith. It is certainly not mentioned in Senior’s entry in the Oxford DNB along with the entry for the recipient Lady Maria Theresa Lewis 1803-1865 who lived in Kent House in Knightsbridge with her second husband Sir George Cornewall Lewis Bart her first husband having been the novelist Thomas Henry Lister 1800-1842. The present item is a 12.5 x 8 cm envelope. In good condition lightly aged. The front panel has the signature ‘N W Senior’ at bottom left with the address centred as usual: ‘The / Lady Theresa Lewis / Kent House’. On the reverse the back flap has been carefully torn open leaving a the red-wax seal intact but sadly without any impression. See Image. No date or place. unknown

Interesting items casting light on the nitty-gritty of Victorian constituency politics. Both are signed ‘W. S. Robson’ and addressed to ‘B. Piffard Esq’. Both in good condition lightly aged with the second a little spotted. Each on a bifolium. ONE 26 May 1885: 3pp 12mo. He has been informed ‘that it is now the wish of the Watford or Divisional Association that I should visit the Division & address meetings there. In fact they have asked me to speak at a meeting at Watford next Saturday evening & I have consented.’ He will be happy to ‘deliver my address at Hemel Hempstead on the Saturday following 2.5. Saturday week.’ He stresses that he is not visiting the division as a candidate. ‘I was asked to meet the Committee of the Divisional Association at Watford with the view of becoming a Candidate but declined to do so on grounds stated in a letter to them & which I shall be happy to explain to you when we have the pleasure of meeting.’ He agrees with Piffard ‘that it is the new voters who have mainly to be considered in the coming fight. They are at present outside the organisation of either party & must be won to Liberalism’. TWO 15 June 1885: 4pp 12mo. In much the same tone as One. Discusses his ‘Watford Speech’ which was not intended as ‘a declaration of political views’ but rather as ‘a controversial skirmish against the inconsistent & dishonest attitude of the Tories in modern politics’. His address ‘might be entitled “How shall we use our vote†’ He is still being cagey: ‘I would rather not appear definitely as a Candidate’. In the remainder of the letter - more than half - he describes how he believes the candidates should conduct themselves. For all his talk of dishonesty it was Robson who was hedging his bets; he never did stand for Piffard's district being elected to Bow and Bromley 1885-1885 and to South Shields 1895-1910. A black and white collotype print covering a 13 x 17.5 cm piece of matt paper with no border. Lightly aged and in good condition apart from the thinnest of strips no more than half a centimetre deep along the top of the image taken up when the print was removed from its mount. This negligibe loss only affects the background and would be easily hidden on the photograph being mounted. A head and shoulders shot of an anxious-looking Best staring to her left with short hair style and side parting plucked eyebrows prim lips and sensible outfit against blurred background. E. Gladstone - Premier’ and including ‘Isaac Holden Esqr. / Of Bradford - Inventor of the Combing Machine’. There is also a ‘Medallion full length Portrait Miss Duncan Morison’. The National Portrait Gallery lists no portraits of Burdon who was born and died in South Shields despite his nine films and numerous starring roles in London's West End. A photographic print in tones of grey covering an entire piece of 12.5 x 18.5 cm card. In good condition lightly-aged. An attractive half-body shot of a smiling Burdon with gleaming teeth and eyes to the right dressed in a smart grey suit with patterned tie arms folded in front of him. Around his waist he has neatly written in a large and bold hand: ‘Yours sincerely / Albert Burdon’. No date (early 1930s). Richard Cobden Radical Liberal politician who led the fight to abolish the Corn Laws. Three Autograph Items including part of draft manuscript of account of his 1837 meeting in Egypt with Mehmet Ali.
The draft of the meeting with Mehmet Ali after his return from his travels in April 1837 and published in November of that year. One of the other items dated 18 April 1841 from 103 Westbourne Terrace London. Another from Midhurst 20 June 1856. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. ONE: Autograph draft of conclusion of description of his meeting with Mehmet Ali ‘Mehemet Ali’. The ODNB states that in July 1836 Cobden produced a pamphlet ‘which analysed the Russo-Turkish dispute . attempting to play down the Turcophilia that was rife in Britain in the 1830s. In October Cobden embarked on a long tour sailing via Lisbon Gibraltar and Malta to the eastern end of the Mediterranean as far as Constantinople meeting Mehmet Ali in Egypt before returning via Greece in April 1837.’ The present text is the conclusion of the draft manuscript of the account he gave of that meeting and had published in Tait’s Edinburgh Magazine in November 1838. 1p foolscap 8vo. The page is headed ‘20’ and carries ten lines of text one and a half lines of which are deleted. Lightly aged worn and creased. On reverse in pencil in a contemporary hand: ‘Cobden / M. S. S His work in Turkey’. The text reads with deleted passage in square brackets: ‘Often in recurring to my interview with this extraordinary man - the spring-like elasticity of whose mind evinces its power in proportion as it is pressed - and recollecting the eagerness of his enquiries upon practical subjects - as well as the vehemence of manner with which he sustained his opinions - evincing the spring-like elasticity of mind which manifests its power in proportion as it is pressed - I think with pleasure of the refreshing & animating scene not unmixed with regret that I shall probably never again have the opportunity of chatting with old Mehemet Ali’. TWO: Slip of paper cut from the beginning of a letter in the third person with reverse blank. In fair condition lightly aged. Reads: ‘Mr Cobden presents his compliments to Mr Cornwall Lewis & begs to forward for presentation to the Lords of the Treasury a memorial’. THREE: Printed form response with thick black border. 1p 32mo. In fair condition on discoloured paper. By recipient at head of first page: 'Letter from Mr Sergeant sic Ballantine / United Club -'. Begins: 'I have to acknowledge the receipt of what purports to be a specimen of a new family paper called "The English Resident" & which it is supposed will supply a want existing especially amongs the English sojourners of all descriptions in different French places of resort. & notably at this one of the most favourable watering places of the British people - Those who favoured me with the number in question were aware that for many years of a busy life there has rarely been a year during which upon more than one occasion I have not sought health and recreation uponits shores. I have had abundant opportunities of appreciating its advantages & recognizing its wants and I welcome very heartily the probabl advent of a newspaper which appears to be conducted upon principles likely to render it a very popular addition.' One of a number of letters from British poets in response to enquiries from Paul Furness with regard to their pub memories. Addressed to ‘Dear Mr Furness’ and signed ‘Arnold Wesker’. Begins: ‘You must understand this about Jews: they descend from parents who fled pogroms which where sic usually lanched sic from the inns where peasants assembled and became drunk.’ Turning to his own experience he continues: ‘Neither I nor my family nor my circle of friends frequented pubs. The ignorant gathered there to realease sic their beery prejudices and hatreds to stimulate dutch courage & to give reign to a spurious imagination. / We gathered in our kitchens & shared tea sandwiches bread pudding matzos dipped in egg & fried & - if we were lucky - a little chicken-soup.’ He states that he still doesn’t ‘have the pub habit’ before turning to the ‘angry young men’ who ‘were never a group’ and ‘shared no social life’. ‘We weren’t very angry either. We simply had energy & that special joy which comes from recognition. I was rarely angry - except with fools idiot critics and I’m afraid drunks.’ He concludes: ‘David Mercer drank himself to death & was only ever maudlin when drunk as I find most people drunk become. Tennyson forgery: manuscript document presenting itself as a letter from Alfred Lord Tennyson to the wife of William Ewart Gladstone agreeing to a visit as long as he can smoke his pipe.
Stated to have been sent from 'Aldworth / Oct 25 - 76'. 25 October 1876. An apparent forgery of a letter the text of which is quoted in Hallam Tennyson’s 1897 memoir of his father. 1p 12mo. On discoloured wove paper. Aged and with repair with archival tape at extremities on reverse. Folded twice for postage. Reads: ‘Aldworth / Oct 25 - 76 / My dear Mrs Gladstone / On Monday then - if all be well. As you are good enough to say that you will manage everything rather than lose my visit - you must manage that I may have my pipe in my own room whenever I like / Yours ever / A Tennyson/’. The supposed provenance is noted in pencil on the reverse: ‘This letter was written by Alfred Lord Tennyson to Mrs. Gladstone in 1876. Purchased from Noel Conway of New St Birmingham in 1900 by / Samuel Englefield / Henley on Thames.’ The present text differs from Hallam Tennyson’s version also in the third volume of Lang and Shannon by reading ‘you must’ rather than ‘will you’ - the latter reading also featuring in the facsimile of the letter in the Strand Magazine 1892 among the illustrations to J. Reads: ‘Benjamin Britten wishes me to thank you for your kind message. Entirely composed of texts of 22 songs some in German and French with the last four ‘arr. BENJAMIN BRITTEN’. Also present is an envelope only with stamps and Saxmundham postmark of 20 July 1976 addressed to ‘GEORGE BEHREND / FLIQUET / JERSEY / CHANNEL ISLES.’ Not in Pears’s elegant hand and with a distinctive capital ‘Q’ dead vertical downstroke. Whether written out by Britten or not is unclear but annotated in another hand ‘Last letter of any sort from Ben on becoming Lord Britten.’ I stress that there is no letter surviving. See Image. Otherwise in good condition lightly aged. Folded. Wolfestan's letter is 'capital' and he hopes he will send it 'as it exactly backs up my own statement'. On thte previous day he saw and responded to 'the letter of G Roberts': 'the fact is that in the lecture itself I spoke of the scientific theories & said that although they were deeply interesting they were of little use to painters who had to deal with pigments or paints and not with those elements of light which cause the various sensations to the red-seeing or gree-seeing or violet seeing nerves'. He considers the 'report in the Builder' 'very imperfect and disjointed made by an utter ass' and he does not think there is 'a single sentence in it that I could fairly say is mine'. If he publishes the lecture he will send it to him. Returning to Wolfestan's letter he finds that it 'will go far to explain the difference between artists and scientists on the subject of colour'. LETTER TWO to Mrs A'Beckett': 3pp 12mo. Bifolium on grey paper. Damp staining on blank reverse of second leaf otherwise in good condition. He and his wife were looking forward to her 'at home' but could not attend because he had to write a memoir of his brother-in-law whose death took place the day after he saw her. <b>"THE WHOLE CHURCH IS THE SCHOOL OF AQUINAS" </b><br /><br />First American printing of a series of lectures delivered in the spring of 1924 as part of a week-long celebration of St. Thomas Aquinas. Bound in Art-Deco-style black-and-white boards with printed label and complete in the scarce original dust wrapper. Both the label and the wrapper are decorated with the Dominican Hound and motto: "Laudare Benedicere Praedicare" "To Praise to Bless and to Preach" from the Dominican Missal Preface of the Blessed Virgin Mary. <br /><br />The English Province of the Dominicans was "ordered by His Holiness Pope Pius XI to hold celebrations in honour of the Sixth Centenary of the Canonisation of St. Thomas Aquinas." The Dominicans responded by organizing festivities at the University of Manchester from May 26-May 31 1924. The lectures consisted of an inaugural address delivered by Professor T.F. Tout: The Place of St. Thomas in History followed by St. Thomas as a Philosopher Prof. A.E. Taylor The Theology of St. Thomas Aelred Whitacre O.P. The Mysticism of St Thomas Vincent McNabb O.P. St. Thomas as an Interpreter of Holy Scripture Hugh Pope O.P. An Epilogue Monsignor Gonne concludes: "The whole Church is the school of Aquinas. Daily his voice is raised." The lectures were complemented by a showcase display in the Rylands Library of several early editions of the works of St. Thomas. Approbations including the Imprimatur of Bede Jarrett O.P. Without dater or place. On one side of a 7.5 x 12.5 cm leaf of pink paper extracted from an album. In good condition very lightly aged. Centred on the page in blue ink the inscription reads: 'love from Enid Blyton'. No other writing anywhere on the leaf. As 600 million copies of Blyton's books have been sold worldwide and as she oversaw the design of her books and insisted on her distinctive signature being placed on every cover it is not an exaggeration to state that this is one of the most famous signatures of the twentieth century. On letterhead of St. Mary's Vicarage Primrose Hill N.W. London 23 April 1909 . 2pp. 4to. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. A warm and characteristically solicitous letter. She has heard 'such a sad account' of the recipient and hopes she is 'quite well & fit again now'. The Dearmers 'couldn't manage Paris but we should have loved it - There has been so much - boys' holidays & my book & now another new play! I am sending you "Gervase" - I always think of correcting the proofs at Alnmouth and the sunshine there - & your little red cap with the tassel!' She asks if 'Mrs. Erskine' is 'still in Paris' and reports that she 'went down to Wimbledon' the previous Monday 'and had a heavenly day in the sunshine at Elmley house' home of Earl Beauchamp.
