‘A whole career lies between the quotations’: V. S. Pritchett English writer and critic. Autograph Letter Signed ‘Victor Pritchett’ submitting his ‘Turgenev’ i.e. the typescript of his ‘Gentle Barbarian’ to his editor ‘Mr Higgins’.
11 May 1977. On letterhead of 12 Regents Park Terrace London N.W.1. Pritchett’s ‘The Gentle Barbarian: The Life and Work of Turgenev’ appeared in 1977; the present letter is clearly addressed to his editor at the book’s publishers Chatto & Windus. Pritchett’s entry in the Oxford DNB describes his handwriting as ‘legendarily ugly and difficult to decipher’ but the present example is no worse than an average hand. 1p 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. Two fold lines. He is sending his ‘Turgenev’ and explains: ‘As you will see I have marked passages from the book in purple crayon and my own summary bridges in green. They are long because of course a whole career lies between the quotations.’ He hopes Higgins finds that ‘they are satisfactory; if they need changes in your opinion they can be altered’ but he gives dates when he will be ‘away in Cornwall’ for ‘A much needed holiday!’ He ends in the hope that Higgins is enjoying his holiday. Clifford Bax playwright and author. Autograph Letter Signed to Clifford Musgrave ‘Mr Muspratt’ regarding a lecture he gives in Brighton accompanied by the actress and model Meum Stewart.
14 and 24 February 1945. The first on letterhead of D2 Albany London W1; the second from the same Piccadilly address. See his entry and that of his brother in the Oxford DNB. The recipient Clifford Musgrave d.1993 Borough Librarian was instrumental in the saving and renovation of the Brighton Pavilion. Both items in good condition lightly aged. Both written in an elegant close calligraphic hand. The first is misaddressed to ‘Mr Muspratt’ and the second to ‘Mr. Musgrave’. Both signed ‘Clifford Bax’. ONE 14 February 1945: 2pp 16mo. Nineteen lines. Regarding the arrangements for a lecture he is going to give he has been asked by ‘Eric’ to communicate with him about his ‘Brighton visit’. As the letter of ‘Eric’ was ‘hurried and ambiguous’ he asks whether he has arranged for the actress and model ‘Miss Meum Steuart sic’ to stay at the ‘Old Ship’ or at ‘the Albion if it has been reopened’. He understands that ‘Eric’ will be joining them at their ‘little supper-party at the Ship after the lecture’. There is a possibility that ‘Mr. Leon M. Lion whom you probably know through Eric’ will be joining them. He thinks he has addressed him by his ‘true name it is quite familiar to me’ although he is in his address book as Clifford Musgrave. TWO 24 February 1945: 1p 12mo. Seventeen lines. Begins: ‘Dear Mr. Musgrave / I did enjoy my brief visit to Brighton . . . . that place of such happy memories for me. In 1935 I all-but took a flat no the sea-front: and as very small children we spent several holidays at a boarding-house in the Old Steyne. What is more I have always enjoyed the Pavilion because it speaks of a determination to make life gay.’ In addition Musgrave himself ‘came up to expectation. Indeed Miss Stewart and I when we were in the train lamented our poor chance of cultivating sombody so much to our liking’. Furthermore Bax ‘met’ Musgrave ‘this morning in the correspondence columns of the Lit: Supp: - a charming surprise’. In a postscript he expresses relief that the gout with which he is at present inflicted ‘postponed its visit till after my talk at Brighton!’ 14 and 24 February 1945. 12 May 1908. On letterhead of 14 Hanover Square W. London. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once. The valediction reads ‘Yours alway faithfully / Arthur W. Pinero’ and it is written with quite a flourish: the ‘y’ of ‘faithfully’ hooks downwards in a long squiggle exrending downwards past the right of the termination of Pinero’s signature which rises upwards being dotted above and below the signature’s underlining. He feels that her ‘kind letter is all the more welcome inasmuch as it gives signs’ that she is recovering from her recent illness. ‘We have indeed been greatly concerned at the bad news we have heard of you. I hope that the present fine weather will set you up completely.’ He thanks her for what she says about his play ‘The Thunderbolt’: ‘I fear it is rather too serious an affair for the taste of the ordinary playgoer; but we shall see.’ He ends with ‘repeated acknowledgments’. 12 May 1908. ‘The most barefaced case of pretended centenarianism’: Frederick Lahrbush confidence-trickster and pretended centenarian. Signed Autograph Inscription claiming that he was ‘born March 9th. 1766.’
In another hand: ‘Written Oct 7. 1870.’ New York. During Lahrbush’s lifetime William John Thoms in his ‘Human Longevity’ 1873 described his claim to have been born in 1766 as ‘the most barefaced case of pretended centenarianism which has ever come under my notice’. ‘Capt. Lahrbush’ who claimed to have been born in 1766 ended his days in New York. He also claimed to have guarded Napoleon in St Helena and to have obbained a lock of Bonaparte’s hair there. In fact he was court-martialled for fraud in 1818 and sent as a convict to Australia. ONE to Grinling: He identifies the fungi he sent adding a comment on bacteoles of mallow. Ends in the hope of attending ‘the Epping Forest foray this year’. TWO to Whitaker. Quarto very handsomely bound in contemporary three-quarter red morocco over marbled paper covered boards the spine with raised bands gilt ruled and decorated one compartment lettered in gilt gilt rules to the turnovers marbled endleaves probably supplied at a later date. iv; 119 5; ii; 24 pp. 72 plates on 72 leaves. A pleasing copy handsomely bound at the time of publication very little evidence of wear to the binding which remains tight and strong the text-block with some of the typical mellowing of the paper at the edges the plates all with strong images and well preserved. A fine example. FIRST PRINTING OF THE EXPANDED VERSION WITH THE 24 PAGE TEXTUAL SUPPLEMENT AND THE ADDITIONAL 12 PLATES. Bible in English for the Blind Printed in the New York Point Alphabet Braille
New York: American Bible Society 1895. Hard Cover. Very Good. First edition of this Bible volume I only; folio 14" x 13" 164 leaves embossed in the New York Point Alphabet for the Blind which is a system of tactile raised dots similar to Braille. Contemporary 3/4 calf over tan cloth covered boards spine ruled in gilt; spine label is absent. New York Point for the Blind was invented by William Bell Wait 1839-1916 educator for the Blind as an alternative to the "Line Letter" system consisting of raised letters of the standard alphabet which was in use in the late 19th Century and lasted for several decades. But Braille had been invented by Louis Braille in 1824 but fell into disuse only to be revived in the early 20th Century and Braille remains today the standard in reading and writing for the Blind throughout the world. Internally quite clean with the embossed dots in very good condition; small loss at head of spine and corners worn through; a very good copy now quite scarce on the market. Later editions of the present work are often misdated as 1834 because of the copyright date on the verso of the title- page but Ruth E. Adomeit gives a date range of 1850 to 1875 for these later editions Three Centuries of Thumb Bibles A80. The physical properties of this particular copy indicate that it was published the earlier end of the range around 1850. . Publisher's purple cloth with gilt-titled spine and design of a child's head blindstamped on lower board. . Miniature book 17/8" x 21/8". . With a woodcut frontispiece title-page vignette and twenty-seven full-page illustrations all printed in black. Engravings by Alexander Anderson 1775 – 1870. Binding slightly loose. Some light foxing. A very good copy. The present work is a simplified rendition of the Bible for a child audience. We could not locate any information about the "Lady of Cincinnati" who authored the work.</p> Fisher and Brother, hardcover

Dated 'May 1950'. The inscription is on a 22.5 cm square piece of card and reads: 'Eden Phillpotts - somewhat battered but still telling stories. May 1950.' Laid down on the card above the inscription is a 14 x 18 cm black and white photograph depicting Phillpotts book in hand standing in front of a bookcase which has apparently been cut by Phillpotts from a magazine. Rivington and others 1819. 216 x 136 mm. 8 1/2 x 5 3/8". viii 9-223 1 pp.Translated from the Greek by William Smith. <br/> Attractive contemporary oxblood calf decorated in gilt and blind covers with a wide gilt palmette frame enclosing an intricately blind-stamped panel with additional gilt decoration raised bands spine heavily gilt in compartments black morocco label gilt turn-ins marbled endpapers and edges. Front free endpaper inscribed in ink: "Miss Filliter obtained this Book as a Prize by her uniform attention to the Study of Latin during the Half-year. / June 1828." Lower corners lightly bumped a little rubbing at extremities flyleaves faintly browned occasional trivial internal imperfections but still quite a fine copy the contents extremely clean and unusually bright and in a well-preserved binding with a great deal of aesthetic appeal.<br/> <br/> In a handsomely decorated binding this is an excellent translation of one of the most important treatises of literary criticism to come out of the ancient world. First published in 1737 our translation established the reputation of William Smith 1711-87 as a "talented classical scholar." DNB A later William Smith the lexicographer said of "On the Sublime" "there is scarcely any work in the range of ancient literature which independent of its excellence of style contains so many exquisite remarks upon oratory poetry and good taste in general." Although generally attributed to the third century Greek philosopher and critic Longinus the work probably preceded him. After unsuccessful attempts to determine if Dionysius of Halicarnassus Cassius Longinus Plutarch or another was the author scholars arrived at the solution of calling the creator "Pseudo-Longinus." Our pretty though unsigned binding combines gilt and blind decoration in a particularly pleasant way. Volumes of classics in ornamental bindings were popular school prizes in the 19th century but ours is distinguished by being presented to a young lady who excelled in Latin at a time when most women received little formal education and 40 percent of the women in England were illiterate. The condition here suggests Miss Filliter and her successors treasured and cared for the present volume. Printed for F. C. and J. Rivington (and others) unknown

Walter Crane Arts and Crafts artist. Autograph Letter Signed to J. Stanley Little with thirteen examples of Crane's work including invitation cards handbills letterheads.
13 Holland Street Kensington and other London addresses. 1886 to 1912. The fourteen items are laid down on three pages on two leaves of grey paper removed from an album on the reverse of one leaf are two coloured coaching scenes by Randolph Caldecott one featuring a highwayman. The overall condition is fair with creasing and signs of age. The Autograph Letter Signed is from Crane to 'My dear Stanley Little'. 1p. landscape 8vo. With letterhead of Beaumont Lodge Shepherd's Bush featuring an illustration by Crane of a shepherd and sheep. 20 September 1892. He is sending a copy of his 'Claims of Decorative Art' and hopes that 'as one who has thought & written much on art' he will 'accept it as a contribution from my side the question or at least as "Friendship's Offering".' As an imperialist Little's politics were opposed to Crane's. He asks him to 'look for us at No 13 Holland St. Kensington when you are next in town'. In a postscript he states: 'The good wife is away in Essex with the two boys but returns at the week's end.' On the same page are six items with decorations apparently by Crane: first a label for 'The Pioneer' printed in sepia with space for 'Number Contents Price' showing a knight climbing up dense foliage to a languid lady; second a label or bookplate for the 'A E & C S Handicraft Design' with the name supported by two women in revolutionary caps each flanked by a cherub; third another example of the Beaumont Lodge letterhead ; fourth and fifth two copies of a strange tiny design of an African hunter with spear before a setting sun printed in negative on grey paper; sixth a tiny monogram perhaps 'L J S' made by a snake and printed in red. The next page carries a season ticket with design by Crane of two workmen shaking hands for the 1906 Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society at the Royal Academy made out in manuscript to 'The West Sussex Gazette'. The third page carries six items: first a printed handbill advertising 'The Leek Press Papers: No. I. The Relation of Art to Education and Social Life by Walter Crane Twenty-eight pages in wrapper.' With two vignettes the first of two country folk with ten geese; the second of a peacock. The reverse advertises a 'Catalogue of a Collection of Designs by Walter Crane A.R.W.S. with vignette of stork and lettering by Crane. Carries two close tears repaired with archival tape. Second printed in red an invitation card designed by Crane to the Old House 13 Holland St: 'Dame Walter Crane bids you welcome on New Year's Day 1912 in the evening at nine thirty'. Third Crane's autograph signature cut from the valediction to a letter: 'Every yours Walter Crane'. Fourth a handbill advertisement for 'The Fabian Society Session 1886-1887' with design by Crane of female forms representing Liberty Equality and Fraternity. The 'Executive' are named as Annie Besant Hubert Bland Edward R. Pease Frank Podmore G. Bernard Shaw Sidney Webb and Charlotte M. Wilson'. Fifth an invitation card printed in brown to the private view of the fifth Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society 3 October 1896 at the New Gallery 121 Regent Street. Made out to J. Stanley Little of the African Review. Featuring the same design as above of the two workers shaking hands. Sixth letterhead printed in red for 13 Holland Street Kensington W. In good condition lightly aged on good Britannia paper. In worn wraps with printed slip describing the item from a bookseller's catalogue Henry Grey 1901 45s and docketed at back. Neatly and closely written out in a clerk's hand. At end: 'The Abstract of this Will and Codicil is taken from the Probate thereof Granted by the Prerogative Court of Canterbury to Anne Lady Belasyse Relict of the said John Lord Belasyse and One of the Executors the 7th. of May 1690'.
