‎2 Scarce American Editions - 'She' and 'King Solomon's Mines'‎

‎Book. Very Good. Soft cover. 1892. 'AUTOGRAPHED LETTER' written and signed by H. RIDER HAGGARD -- dated September 27 1892 on Haggard's own letterhead from Ditchingham House Norfolk - interestingly there's an Egyptian cartouche on letterhead on upper left corner. 1892 letter from H. Rider Haggard is in exceptional condition-- single leaf 7" x 4.5" verso blank. Two punch holes at head creases from old folds. Eleven lines of script-- 'Gentlemen I return one camera as I only want one. I hope the you lent me has arrived safely. I enclose cheque for 50 on account of cost of - Faithfully yours H. Rider Haggard'. The letter come alongside two early American editions of Haggard's first novels 'King Solomon's Mines' and 'SHE: A History of Adventure'. These two novels had enormous popularity and their success led Haggard to serialize both books. 'King Solomon's Mines'- Published by JOHN B. ALDEN NY unabridged in 'The New York Novelist' Vol. II Nos. 5-8 July1885. Original printed wrapper-- contents clear and unmarked with occasional odd spot. 98 pages with 33 pages of ads including covers. The story of adventurer Allan Quatermain's life.                  'SHE: A History of Adventure'- 1887 published by POLLARD & MOSS NY in 'The Echo Series' No. 5. Original printed blue wrappers-- edge worn a bit of creasing spine partially perished. ‎Undated. On a piece of thin card 30.5 x 23 cm. Dimensions of illustration 23 x 17 cm. Signed by Twidle in bottom right-hand corner. The image itself is clear and sharp in spotted and grubby margins. Docketed in pencil on reverse 'Monkish Robes 491 to 5 inches width with rule as in picture'. An attractive detailed watercolour in black and grey and picked out in white showing three monks processing with eyes cast to the ground in different directions in the grounds of stone temple overgrown with foliage. One monk advances towards the viewer while another ascends stone steps with carvings of the Buddha at the base of each handrail. Twidle was a prolific book and magazine illustrator and it is not clear where the illustration was printed. It does not feature in the most likely title 'Through Eastern Windows' RTS 1919. ‎Label on reverse dates the solo photograph to 27 February 1914 with the stamp of Foulsham & Banfield 49 Old Bond Street W. London. The photograph of Cooper & Eadie without date or place but from the same production. Edward Knobloch’s play ‘My Lady’s Dress’ ‘in which’ as one newspaper wrote at the time ‘the heroine’s dream takes her to the foreign and London scenes surrounding the manufacture of a costly gown’ premiered at the Royalty Theatre in London in 1914 and was revived several times through the 1920s. Although neither of these photographs is among the five Foulsham & Banfield portraits of Cooper in the National Portrait Gallery collection the second one Cooper and Eadie embracing is present among the seven unattributed scenes from the 1914 production in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection ‘Given to the Gabrielle Enthoven Collection by L.E. Berman’. Both of the present items are black and white gelatin silver prints. Dimensions are approximate. ONE: Cooper seated on a chair in front of a window and beside a table hands clasped in her lap looking mournfully at the viewer in dotted smock worn over plaid dress with lace collar and crocheted Welsh-style shawl. HEIGHT: 30.5 cm. WIDTH: 21 cm. In fair condition lightly aged with slight wear and chipping at edges and one very small closed tear at head beside ‘5/-’ which appears to be part of the print. Written in pencil on reverse: ‘Miss Cooper as Annette / Act I. Sc 3.’ Also label with ink note: ‘My Lady’s Dress / Royalty / Feb 27 1914’ and the stamp of Foulsham & Banfield 49 New Bond Street. TWO: The Victoria and Albert description reads as follows: ‘Photographic print of Act III Scene 3 of a production of My Lady's Dress at the Royalty Theatre 23rd April 1914. The photograph features a full length image of Miss Cooper as Anne and Mr Eadie as John they are standing together embracing and are gazing towards one another.’ He wears a dressing gown and she is in a rather splendid Pre-Raphaelite-style dress. Originally on a bifolium but now with the two leaves separated and attached to a white stub from an album. In good condition on aged and lightly-spotted paper and trimmed at the head. Laid out in the conventional manner With the reverse of the final leaf printed in landscape so that the item can be folded into the customary package. The same page carries the 'Memorandum of Association' in small print including 24 lettered 'objects for which the Company is established' including 'v To acquire the right to levy taxes on Bicycles Piano-Organs Musical-Evenings Wagners "Ring" Flashing Street Advertisements Motor-Cars Lord Mayor's Shows Public Statues Matinee Hats Minor Poets "Bloomers" Light Tenors Professional Beauties Golfers Drawing-room Receiters and Money-lenders.' The prospectus continues in the same vein with a list of the 'principal Foreign Agencies of the business' from Aden to Zanzibar adding: 'In addition to the properties enumerated above the Company will acquire from the Vendors "spheres of influence" in all parts of the world.' References follow to 'the important asset known as the Suzerainty of the South African Republic' 'the "Open Door" situate in the Chinese Empire' 'prospecting expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic Regions' and other international affairs. There is also a description of the state of the books by 'Messrs. Olde Turk & Co.' C. R. Harrison in his 'House of Harrison' 1914 explains the context of the satire: 'The twenty-second Christmas number of Truth devoted itself to a clever political satire entitled "The British Empire Unlimited." Truth is before all things Liberal in its politics and the aim of the satire was to poke fun and ridicule at the then Conservative Government the author especially attacking the Marquis of Salisbury who was Prime Minister on the ground of his wide Imperial Policy and satirizing his well-known ability for administration and attention to detail. The story represents Lord Salisbury bringing out a gigantic Commercial Company entitled "The British Empire Unlimited" to run the affairs of the nation on a commercial basis; he being Promoter and Director and the other members of the Government and celebrities of the day each having his allotted post. The prospectus like that of other commercial undertakings was full of bold advertisement and was prepared confidentially with a view to bursting on the public attention as a surprise.' ‎Fred Grubb [Frederick Grubb] (born 1930), English poet [Derek Stanford (1918-2008), English writer; 1960s Hampstead coterie]:‎

‎Four Typed Letters Signed and two Autograph Cards Signed from the Hampstead poet Frederick Grubb one in full four 'Fredk G' and one 'Comrade G' to the critic Derek Stanford including a virulent attack and with two other items signed by Grubb.‎

‎1973 and 1974; most from 243 Haverstock Hill Hampstead. All items clear and complete on aged paper. Letters totaling: 4to 1 p; landscape 8vo 5 pp. The two cards carry long messages written in red ink in Grubb's close neat hand; one is standard size the other 27 x 13.5 cm. Five envelopes are stapled to their letters. Grubb 'one of the last survivors of the famous 1960s Hampstead coterie of writers actors and critics' writes entertainingly in an emphatic energetic manner marvellously evocative of the 1970s London literary scene. Grubb mounts an extraordinarily savage attack on Stanford after sending him two pages of publicity material relating to a 1973 'Benefit for Chilean Workers & Refugees. Pablo Neruda Memorial Reading' one page signed by Grubb and the other with autograph note by him reading 'Fuck the dim and mawkish 1890's - what's needed is the vital spirit of the 1930's and 1970's!' Grubb's comment on the 1890s - a subject on which Stanford was an authority - elicits a mocking christmas card from the critic containing the comment 'Do not "Fuck the Nineties" - a misplaced piece of virility when there are so many Women's Lib vaginas ready to provide a more suitable receptacle.' A furious Grubb replies December 1973: 'I do not invite an acquaintance to donate to a fund in order to get insulted myself and worse to see my cause vilified by third-rate quips. . I am amazed by your casual assumption that beliefs of deep significance to somebody can be gibed at in your petty way. Then I recall that as a typical English conformist and opportunist you just can not see or understand anything beyond the narrow horizon of your complacency and comfords. . you are among the more servile corrupter dunces I've bumped into. Drop dead and I wouldn't spit on your grave let alone put on a Memorial Reading.' In a postscript Grubb responds directly to the 'Women's Lib' comment stating that he wouldn't introduce his 'delightful and bright if non-puritan Hungarian Communist Party girl' to 'scum like you hardened in vulgarity and cynicism. You boasted - "I write in Tribune for the free tickets". Not because you believe in any cause. I detest hypocrites.' In a long letter of 'Dec/Jan 1974' headed 'Kremlin' Grubb attempts at reconciliation. 'My remarks were never aimed to hurt. It's simply that as a Marxist in a deeply reactionary conformist and conventional society . I've found that the only way to get anything to "register" to rub off on the bourgeois is by absolute polemical force a thorough kick in the arse.' Other topics include: a long discussion of Philip Larkin's 'largely iniquitous anthology' 'The Oxford Book of Twentieth Century English Verse': 'Frankly I didn't "expect" to be in the anthology I can't imagine any qualifying poem! but that doesn't prevent me from agreeing largely with your strictures . Larkin's worst crime in my view is to chicken out of an ideocritical Preface whereby even Yeats had the courage to try to justify his eccentricities.' Grubb's political position: 'I'm NOT a Leavisite never have been. No Marxist could be! . Frankly you've got an obsession with Leavis. When I agree with him it's usually to my own surprise!' The present political situation: 'I hope to find in the Soviet Union a more morally and culturally vital and committed society than in England where free love may exist without prostitution and Heath and Thatcher don't prate about "standards and values and education" while Lambton Harrovian & Jellicoe Etonian pay prostitutes £500 a night when the money should go to the homeless the exploited the unemployed the W.E.A. etc.' Also included is a photocopied page with three newspaper cuttings with initialed note by Grubb to 'Comrade Stanford'. One of the cuttings is of a letter by Grubb to The Times 10 December 1973 attacking W. H. Auden's later period. In a postcard January 1974 Grubb defends his position on 'The betrayal in late Auden' 'duplicity of tone dodgy values artificial versification trite and willed subjects'. In the last letter 31 May 1974 Grubb refers to his 'edition of Roberts's poetry and criticism for Carcanet to join their eds. of Rickwood Hamburger and Edwin Morgan. I may or may not be allowed to include Cornford and Bell with Roberts. These 1930's people are the best: nothing like it has happenned sic since.' Grubb's politics are to the fore throughout: he refers to Lenin as 'our leader and teacher' sends a couple of letters from the 'Revolutionary H.Q.' and signs another off 'For the total destruction of the Tory party of the British capitalist class of all genteel compalcency and the transformation of man and of life. ‎'Fermo. Marche August 24th. 1863.'. One page octavo. Very good on lightly aged paper with embossed blue ink monogram at head. 'Dear Sir My Sister Isabella just arrived tells me you desire my autograph I have great pleasure in complying with your flattering request. .' The blank second leaf of the bifolium is carefully attached to a larger piece of neatly-docketed paper and has the two newspaper cuttings partially laid down on it. The short Times obituary dated 17 March 1908 states that 'She must surely have been the last person alive to whom Charles Lamb addressed a poem'. The other obituary equally short is unattributed. ‎Reginald Fairfax Wells sculptor Two Autograph Letters Signed both 'Reg: F. Wells' from the English sculptor and potter Reginald F. Wells to 'Miss Bellis' regarding her purchase of two bronzes and the art dealer E. J. Van Wisselingh.‎

‎Both from Trosley West Malling Kent. 22 and 25 December 1902. Both items in excellent condition on lightly-aged paper. Letter One 22 December 1902: Addressed to 'Dear Sir'. He has asked Van Wisselingh 'to send the bronzes as I have none here' and he is waiting for a reply: 'if the bronzes have not arrived please wire and you shall have them before Xmas.' Letter Two 25 December 1902: He hopes that his mistake in addressing her as 'Sir' has 'amused and not annoyed you'. He has just had a reply from Van Wisselingh: 'as the notice was so short I could not get new bronzes cast by Xmas; so I sent your letter at once to Mr. V. W.' Van Wisselingh has sent invoices which Wells did not ask him to do: 'I would rather you sent the cheque £10. 10 to me as you intended which I shall pass on to Mr. Van W'. He concludes: 'If you have thought me remiss I hope this lengthy epistle will explain.' ‎'Leslie's House' 25 Barnes Place Colombo 7 Sri Lanka. 7 November 1978. 1p. 12mo. Air mail letter on blue paper addressed to Arthur Bourne Academic Press Inc. London Ltd 24-28 Oval Road London NW1 7DX England. In good condition lightly aged and creased. Clarke begins by thanking Bourne for his letter and informing him that he has 'sent a card of thank sic to Dr. Allan Cottey'. 'I am now happily retired with the completion of my last and best novel "The Fountains of Paradise" Playboy January and February - HBJ; Gollancz January. I expect to be back in England in August to attend the World S. F. Con at Brighton and to wind-up my affairs - after which I hope to do all my "travelling" via INTELSAT.' He informs him that the 'underwater business' which he conducted with with a Ceylonese partner Hector Ekanayake brother of his boyfriend Leslie Ekanayake who had died in a motorcycle accident in 1977 is 'now very active' but that he has 'little to do with it' although he hopes 'to start some modest diving again'. He ends with the news that Bill Jovanovich of his American publishers Harcourt Brace Jovanovich has 'persuaded me to join the Board of Sea World and perhaps one day I'll go to one of its meetings at San Diego'.
