Dated 'William Watson Windermere Aug 1897'. 2pp. 8vo. Neatly written out on two leaves of laid paper with watermark of Caxton Superfine Vellum. In very good condition on lightly-aged paper. The poem consists of twenty-eight lines arranged in seven four-line stanzas the first reading: 'On lake and fell the loud rains beat And August closes rough and rude. 'Twas Summer's whim to counterfeit The wilder hours her hours prelude.' The last stanza reads: 'And various through her mundane lot She counts herself benignly starred - All her vicissitudes forgot In your regard.' Apparently addressing an autograph hunter she writes: 'I beg to forward you a specimen of my "pothooks and hangers" trusting you will "admire" if you honestly can. Believe I have pleasure in gratifying your request and am with truth my dear Ever yours faithfully Eliza Cook'. The poem also signed 'Eliza Cook' is four lines long titled 'Impromptu on being told the death of my Mother would leave a scar on my heart' beginning 'That stroke indeed would deeply gash'. There is no indication that the poem was published. In her biography of Cushman 'When Romeo Was A Woman' 2000 Lisa Merrill claims that the two women were lovers. Without place. 1830. 1p. 4to. On laid paper watermarked 'G & R TURNER 1829'. In fair condition on aged and worn paper. Docketed on the reverse 'Bayley sic 1830' and 'By Thomas Haynes Bayly Poet Author of "I'd be a butterfly etc etc'. The poem is sixteen lines long and begins: 'My own Love! my true Love! here's health & joy to you Love A happy year without a tear & sweet smiles not a few Love! Of all my anniversaries I prize your Birth day best. And well I may for 'twas the day that brighten'd all the rest: To this I owe my bliss below - of more than that the Love Whose purity my guide may be to happiness above!' The poem was published in 1829 in the keepsake 'The Casket' London: John Murray; apart from accidentals that version corresponds to this. Brakell Printer Cook Street 1852. 15pp. 12mo with six plates on art paper. In grey printed wraps with title on front cover. In good condition lightly aged and worn. The plates include engravings by H. C. Pigeon of illustrations by S. Holden and a plan by T. B. Ryder. 'The following narrative of local history has been prompted by the recent discovery at Houghton-Green near Warrington of a number of original transcripts so closely connected with the military transactions in this part of our county during the Civil War between Charles the First and his Parliament as to come peculiarly under the province of this Society for notice.' The first plate is 'a representation of the house at Houghton Green. Theh letter A shews the situation of the cavity in which the documents were found.' An appendix pp.14-15 gives 'An Abstract of the Civil War Documents found at Houghton Green near Warrington in May 1851.' The description of the 45 documents is in small print. On letterhead of the Privy Council Office. 19 September 1872. 6pp. 12mo. In very good condition adhering to leaves removed from an album. Helps begins: 'My dear Martin This is one of the things you excel in - the giving in a comparatively short memoir the real aim and end of a life: so that after reading your "In memoriam" one does not care to hear any more details.' Helps 'really cannot find any fault' in Martin's piece. 'Her. Majesty i.e. Queen Victoria must I think be exceedingly pleased with the book - I mean your work. Then the whole subject of the relation of Stockmar to the occupants of the English throne is most judiciously handled; and there is great skill shown in what is omitted to be said.' He gives 'One single criticism' before complaining that he is 'troubled with cattle plague affairs' and so cannot write at more length. Martin best-known work his biography of Prince Albert 1874-1880 would be similarly praised for its tact and skill see his entry in the Oxford DNB. Darton publisher Autograph Manuscript and two Typescripts of an article by the publisher F. J. H. Darton Frederick Joseph Harvey Darton entitled ''West One' on the foundation and history of Grafton Street in London.
London; 1920s. The three items are all in very good condition on lightly-aged paper with slight marking from rusty paperclips. Manuscript: 13pp. 4to. On 13 leaves paginated 1-13. With a few emendations and corrections. The two typescripts both well typed have different layouts to one another. First smaller Typescript: 9pp. 4to. Second larger Typescript: Carbon copy. 9pp. 4to. The article begins: '"The iniquity of oblivion blindly scattereth her poppy . . . In vain we compute our felicities by the advantage of our good names since bad have equal durations." Who was godfather to Grafton Street that short byway of London which from many associations is like to outlive by far any intimate knowledge of its builder It is a pretty irony that though there have been Dukes of Grafton not less eminent than amiable and the street is populous with both the shades and the living forms of men vitally connected with the arts the man who lives thus in bricks and mortar was called "Booby Grafton" and it was said that "as to books he was totally illiterate." And he certainly did not buy that patch of land just west of Bond Street in order to make it a mart of books and pictures and fine jewels. He bought it this second Duke of the title "for gardening" which the greatest book in the world records as man's oldest trade.' The article concludes: 'Perhaps books are the best way to come by a knowledge and love of London. And Grafton Street with its links Bond Street Dover Street Albemarle Street knows a great deal about Books.' The first typescript follows the manuscript in the use of the word 'like' in the first paragraph although amending this in pencil to 'likely'; in the second typescript which is more attractively laid out the word is given as 'likely' suggesting that it is of later production. While there is no record of the publication of this essay it is likely to have been published: Darton's voluminous literary output as his entry in the Oxford DNB indicates included contributions to the Daily News. Clearly responding to an enquiry regarding what books had had a formative influence on his life Piper writes: 'Vollard's Life of Cézanne because it showed me in my teens that an artist can be dedicated unbohemian unworldly against the tide and absolutely true to his instincts which happened to be right. The book - by a dealer too! - has the same characteristics.' Beneath this the name 'JOHN PIPER' is written in capitals in felt-tip pen but this does not appear to be Piper's signature and is in a diffferent hand to the memorandum which is certainly by Piper and appears to be unpublished. Addressed to 'Mr. Moon' on verso of second leaf of bifoliate which has a hole from the breaking of a wafer which still adheres. Reads 'I've taken the liberty of leaving for your inspection a few specimens of my stile of engraving - your brother Mr. Moon in Threadneedle St Francis Graham Moon later Lord Mayor of London was so kind as to say he would recommend me to call as you were bringing out several works - I flatter myself so far as to say - my specimens have given such satisfaction - as to furnish me with several subjects for very superior work - - if you were to favour me with a subject for either of yours - you may depend on my giving both you and the Artist satisfaction - I shall be passing your residence in a day or so and will take the liberty of calling.' If as seems probable the recipient is the printseller Sir Francis Graham Moon 1796-1871 later Lord Mayor of London then of the firm of Moon Boys & Graves of Pall Mall the letter is a significant one marking the beginning of an important association between the two. Place not stated. 1916. In poor condition on aged and brittle paper with significant chipping to edges involving loss of text including the end of Philpotts's signature. Undated but written in 1916 the year of publication of Phillpotts' 'The Green Alleys'. Headed in blue pencil 'Mr Lynd' i.e for the attention of Daily News columnist Robert Lynd. The letter reads: 'Dear Sir I must record that the opportunity I gave you to do a little in the great cause of the natural born child was not done; & it is a source of deep regret to me that after I had told you of the matter in <a> story "Green Alleys' you allowed a critic to dismiss the subject in that manner. You who stand for democracy might well have been looked to to help to redress this wrong & call attention to a wicked enactment & a crying scandal. That your critic sneers at it in a spirit one has not until now associated with "The Daily News". If it is conceivable t<hat> you approve theh Bastardy Laws one <.> course no more to say except let d<.> know it. I am most truly yo<.> Eden Phill<.>'. Jessica Brett Young widow of novelist Francis Brett Young. Four Autograph Letters Signed to 'Mr Jackson' 'Manager Heinemann & Cassell' discussing her husband's copyrights in an energetic style with notes on the writing of 'My Brother Jonathan'
All four on letterheads of the Mount Nelson Hotel Cape Town. Written in October and November 1967. The first three letters each 1p. 4to; and the fourth 2pp. 4to. In good condition on aged and creased paper with three of the four letters stapled together. Letter One: 13 October 1967. She writes 'for information about my position concerning my late husband's books and my Biography of him which Heinemann's published in London in 1962'. The closing of the firm's Cape Town office has been a shock to her. Letter Two: 4 November 1967. Note in top left-hand corner: 'This is the 3686th letter since May 1963 - 80% of which are to publishers & David Higham my Literary agent.' She would like six copies of her biography of her husband. 'The Revival of his books is very pleasing & my correspondence increases all the time.' Letter Three: 5 November 1967 '3687th letter'. Her husband's 'most popular book' 'My Brother Jonathan' has just been republished and she has received six copies. 'They unfortunately let 17 titles out of print & a Birmingham firm "Cambridge Ltd" took over the 17 & have been reprinting in photostat 2 copies a year.' Letter Four: 12 November 1967. She has been 'under doctor's orders & overloaded with correspondence. She wants the copies of the 'latest Reprint' of 'My Brother Jonathan' as she is 'sending copies to "The Cape Times" "The Cape Argus" & "Die Burger". She concludes the first page of the letter by stating that she is 'enclosing notes on the life of the book'. These notes cover whole of the second page beginning: 'My Brother Jonathan just republished by Heinemans for the 23rd. Edition. Francis told me the whole outline of the story that had lain in his subconscious mind for more than 20 years. In January 1928 it was finished after less than 4 months work with 140372 words. In 1948 the Film was having splendid notices in London & in the same year it was shown for the first time in Cape Town at The Colosseum.' She concludes by discussing the film's reception in Cape Town. Jessica Brett Young's papers are now in the University of Birmingham. All four on letterheads of the Mount Nelson Hotel, Cape Town. 22 March 1883; on ornate letterhead in blue and gold carrying address at 449 Strand London as well as addresses in Paris and New York. One page quarto. Very good though slightly aged and creased and with minor damp staining at foot affecting bottom three lines including signature. Wilkinson has written to say that he 'has not the space' Smith has 'named'. 'You express an opinion that Circus business would pay & I from my personal knowledge of Brighton & experience therein feel sure a really good Circus would prove an immense attraction & a paying one & would stand some time by introducing fresh novelties'. He knows Wilkinson's 'building very well & think I can suggest a way of fitting a Ring without interfering in any way with your ordinary concerts & Entertainments'. Suggest a meeting and proposes time. 'It ould be better for all concerned if my clients could arrange with you in preference to taking or putting up a building especially for Circus business'. 'I shall be very glad to see the place of the Ickenham well the section of which savours of some slight addition to our map & also your pits.' He will bring a copy of the map '& my interleaved copy of the Memoir with fresh well-sections added.' Concerns a 'concert on June 16yh in aid of the <> L Guild at Mrs. Beudel's house'. 'It grieves me more than I can express to find that I shall be unable to attend or give my services on that occasion unfortunately my arrangements will not permit of my being in London then'. ITEM ONE: pencil sketch roughly three inches square of pensive woman in full dress seated on chair beside table with vase. Good. On reverse of part of envelope addressed to 'H. Wyatt Esqre. Newman Street Oxford Street' and postmarked in red ink oval '2 . A NOON . 2 MY 4 1833'. Another postmark in black ink and wafer still adhering. ITEM TWO: pencil sketch roughly one inch by one and a half of trees around long wall with spire in distance. On visiting card of 'Mr. Henry Wyatt' the sketch over the word 'Wyatt'. Good though aged and with traces of blue paper mount adhering to reverse. Pencil calculation on other part of card and the words 'Mr. Burn's' in ink below sketch. ITEM THREE: charcoal roughly three and a half inches by four and a quarter of man's head and shoulders in black picked off in red and white a crude suggestive portrait of a pensive individual. Unobtrusive crease line in bottom left-hand corner. Surrounded by cardboard mount on which attribution to Wyatt in pencil. Oswald Partridge Milne architect Collection of around 27 Typed Letters Signed and 17 Autograph Letters Signed to K. W. Luckhurst Secretary and other officers of the Royal Society of Arts together with some drafts and copies of responses.
1936-65; Wigmore Street and Hampstead London. The collection is in good condition with very occasional minor creasing staining and loss. Majority of items quarto. Milne was a leading Fellow of the Society a Chairman of Council in 1959-61 and Vice-President. The collection provides a valuable insight into the day-to-day workings of the Society from the first letter discussing the R.I.B.A. and whether the Society might set up 'a somewhat similar organisation with similar prestige could be built up for industrial artists' to the last letter commending G. C. H. Chubb on his inaugural address as Chairman of Council 'I hope you will be able to interest industrial Companies etc to associate themselves with the R.S.A.'. Most items are signed 'Oswald P. Milne'. An important aspect of the correspondence concerns repairs and redecorations to the Society's premises at 19 John Street Adelphi which Milne appears to have superintended and for which it seems from a letter of 3 January 1940 he was made a presentation by the Society. In these letters he liases with J. W. Falkner & Sons Ltd acting on the Society's instructions and discussing the builders' quotations and other practical aspects of the work. Milne also gives his opinion 1 April 1942 on the competing claims of Messrs Vanstone and Veale and Sanders for acting as Surveyors on the work. Also present is an initialed carbon of the letter 19 May 1942 to which this letter responds from the Acting Secretary discussing the 'thorny problem'. 'A good deal of unpleasantness is being caused . It would appear that Vanstones do not propose to give way in the matter and Veale and Sanders do not propose to admit the claim.' 1936-65; Wigmore Street and Hampstead, London. unknown

Without date but circa 1887 or place. On paper roughly four and a quarter inches by three and a quarter wide with corners snipped to make an irregular octohedron. Good clear illustration on ruckled aged paper. Tipped onto a larger piece of aged glue-stained paper. An amusing caricature showing Haggard astride Rozinante in a full suit of armour with an inkpot and quill pen as hat holding a lance inscribed 'LITERATURE' in one hand and a baby wrapped in a large roll of paper inscribed 'SHE M.S.' in the other. Unsigned and attributed to Furniss in pencil on mount. Docketed in Furniss's hand on reverse 'The Rider Haggard - "Fader ob She."' Haggard's 'She' was first serialized in the "Graphic" from October 1886 to January 1887. Presumably the original of an image used in a magazine but no version of this drawing appears to be held by the National Portrait Gallery. Without date [but circa 1887?] or place. unknown
