It was an amusing book to write". Notes the author's biographer: "His output had its ups and downs. Cakes and Ale was one of the ups. He went on writing for another thirty years but never matched it in style or structure. It was a pity that the scandal surrounding the models for the main characters drew the attention of the literary community away from the book's real merit." Today of course it is those models who provide the fun: Driffield the Grand Old Man of Letters Thomas Hardy and the writer-on-the-make Alroy Kear a highly unflattering portrait of the novelist Hugh Walpole who never forgave Maugham for writing his most malicious--but also his funniest--book. Inscribed copies of the true first American edition of Maugham's most famous book are extremely scarce from any period. This inscription although probably not contemporary with publication has the look and feel of being early and is in brown ink - not at all like the blue ink which Maugham typically used in later post-war inscriptions. His column in the New York Post "The Lyons' Den" was widely read and immensely popular during the many years since its commencement in 1934. Unlike many of his colleagues however Lyons was highly respected for his fairness and highmindedness. According to Ralph Blumenthal in STORK CLUB Boston 2000 "Lyons didn't believe in writing about romances and divorces. Nor it was said did he ever violate a confidence . He corresponded with world leaders and literary giants . " p. 131; and he counted among his friends celebrities as diverse as Ernest Hemingway at whose funeral Lyons was pallbearer Marilyn Monroe and Orson Welles.
