Nell'autunno del 1786, il poeta tedesco parte per l'Italia, fuggendo dai confini del suo ufficio verso l'apparente libertà di una vita allegra e spensierata; il viaggio si configura quasi come una fuga e segna un passaggio decisivo per la vita e l'ispirazione del poeta. Nel "paese dei limoni", l'Italia classica del meridione e, più ancora, a Roma, Goethe trova realizzata quella sintesi di natura e arte, passato e presente, spiritualità e sensualità verso cui era proteso, e sente rifiorire tutte le aspirazioni poetiche che il decennio attivistico di Weimar aveva in buona parte represso. Il suo libro "Viaggio in Italia", scritto molto tempo dopo il viaggio, non è un reportage o un diario di viaggio, ma un'opera letteraria e una testimonianza senza tempo del desiderio di un mondo ideale. Un'apposita sezione del volume è infine dedicata alle difficoltà legate a un elaborato e complesso viaggio verso sud nell'era della diligenza. "Viaggio in Italia" (Italienische Reise) è un'opera che Johann Wolfgang von Goethe scrisse tra il 1813 e il 1817 e pubblicò in due volumi, il primo dei quali uscì nel 1816 e il secondo nel 1817. I due volumi contengono il resoconto di un Grand Tour che l'autore compì in Italia tra il 3 settembre 1786 e il 18 giugno 1788. A essi se ne aggiunse un terzo, pubblicato nel 1829, ma inferiore ai primi due, sulla sua seconda visita a Roma.‎
