Goethe Johann Wolfgang von
Torquato Tasso; ein Schauspiel von Goethe
Hammersmith: Doves Press 1913. Limited Edition. Leather. Near Fine. One of 200 copies on paper octavo size 164 pp. in a Doves binding in German. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe 1749-1832 was a German statesman and a prolific writer whose work includes novels poetry dramas and literary criticism; he was an early participant of the Sturm und Drang literary movement and rose to fame early in life with the publication of "The Sorrows of Young Werther". His play in verse "Torquato Tasso" is about the sixteenth-century poet of the same name; Tasso best known for his poem "Gerusalemme liberata" Jerusalem Delivered was one of the most widely read poets in Europe at the time of the publication of Goethe's play. Throughout his life Tasso suffered from mental illness and the play deals with these struggles as well as those of writing poetry. This volume features a lovely sealskin binding by the Doves Press; founded by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson the Press was entirely self-sufficient designing printing and binding its own books and even cutting its own typeface for use in its publications. The books it published were often chosen for their typographical challenges and were designed and printed with a simple elegance that did justice to the works' literary merits and the Press's skill and innovation. The Doves Bindery used sealskin for many of the bindings such as this one because quality goatskin was diffficult to obtain during and after World War I; sealskin was found to hold up well over a long period of time and met T.J. Cobden-Sanderson's exacting standards. ___DESCRIPTION: Full auburn sealskin gilt ruled borders on the front and rear boards the spine with five raised bands gilt ruled borders and gilt lettering gilt rules along the edges of the boards all edges gilt with dotted fillet gauffering double headband leather turn-ins with gilt ruled borders signed "The Doves Bindery / 19 C-S 13" on the rear turn-in text in red and black with red text in the margins; Doves paper octavo size 9.25" by 6.5" pagination: 1-9 10-163 1 colophon one of 200 copies on paper of a total edition of 227 unnumbered. The Faustian legend has captured the imagination for centuries. In Goethe's Faust the reader discovers the most famous expression of this old German tale. The classic story of a man who makes the deal with the devil and pays with his soul. The influence of this theme on literature cannot be understated. Goethes masterpiece - and perhaps the greatest work in German literature - Faust has made the legendary German alchemist one of the central myths of the Western world. Faust an audacious man boldly wagering with the devil Mephistopheles that no magic sensuality experience or knowledge can lead him to a moment he would wish to last forever. Here in Faust the tremendous versatility of Goethes genius creates some of the most beautiful passages in literature. Here too we experience Goethes characteristic humor the excitement and eroticism of the witches Walpurgis Night and the moving emotion of Gretchens tragic fate. 5 1/4" x 7 5/8" design.
