In 1907 to become minister of the Sephardi Congregation Shearith Israel in New York City, the oldest synagogue in the U. S. He served there until his retirement in 1956. Pool's other posts and activities included: president of the New York Board of Rabbis; member of Herbert Hoover's food conservation staff; field organizer and director of army camp work of the Jewish Welfare Board during World War I; U. S. Representative of the Zionist Commission in Jerusalem to help implement the Balfour Declaration; regional director for Palestine and Syria of the Joint Distribution Committee; founder and director of the Jewish Education Committee of New York; president of the Union of Sephardic Congregations; president of the Synagogue Council of America; chairman of the Committee of Army and Navy Religious Activities of the National Jewish Welfare Board; vice president and president of the American Jewish Historical Society; and U. S. Delegate to the NATO Atlantic Congress in London. Pool wrote several significant works and monographs in the fields of American Jewish history, religion, education, and Zionism, and edited and translated Sephardi and Ashkenazi Hebrew liturgical works. Erano lisci e levigati, felici e potenti. A causa della loro superbia però furono puniti dagli dèi. E da quel momento non si sono mai più sentiti completi. Hanno iniziato a soffrire e a temere la morte. La storia del pensiero è la storia dei tentativi di porre un rimedio a questa incompletezza, per tornare a essere felici. Di questo, e di nient'altro, hanno parlato i più grandi scrittori greci, fossero poeti come Omero o filosofi come Platone e Aristotele. Mauro Bonazzi ci accompagna nel labirinto di risposte che gli antichi hanno cercato di dare alla domanda più annosa di tutte: dove si nasconde il senso delle nostre esistenze? Cercare di comprenderlo, attraverso l'aiuto della filosofia, costituisce ancora oggi uno sforzo decisivo per chi è impegnato nel mestiere più bello e difficile, che è quello di vivere bene. «La civiltà greca ha prodotto una riflessione luminosa sul senso della condizione umana - su quello che siamo e sul valore delle nostre vite - capace di attraversare i secoli, influenzando e stimolando grandi scrittori e grandi pensatori. È questa la domanda a cui bisogna trovare una risposta, perché è qui la chiave per comprendere il senso della nostra esistenza».

Edoardo Boncinelli racconta di avere avuto consapevolezza della morte a cinque anni, mentre a Bologna nell'immediato dopoguerra, ospite di un centro profughi allestito alla meglio in una caserma, parlava con la mamma di persone che non c'erano più. Discute con argomentazioni lucide e stringenti le consolazioni della religione, dai miti delle origini al paradiso cristiano, alle credenze più diffuse. br. Molte persone, anche colte e brillanti, dinanzi alla morte si comportano in maniera inspiegabilmente irrazionale, finendo per causare a sé e agli altri sofferenze inutili e ampiamente evitabili. Da un lato, è una questione di ignoranza: sulla morte scrivono molto i filosofi, i bioeticisti o i religiosi, ma raramente si sente la voce dei medici, che senza dubbio sono coloro che la conoscono meglio. Dall'altro lato, è una questione di paura, di invincibile paura, e si sa che la paura è una cattiva consigliera. Alla paura di non esistere più, si aggiunge spesso, anche più forte, la paura di soffrire, ed è questo che rende il libro che tenete tra le mani un rassicurante e necessario testo di riferimento, speciale, utile e unico. Gian Domenico Borasio è uno dei maggiori esperti europei di cure palliative e ha un messaggio importante per tutti noi: sapendola gestire, nella grande maggioranza dei casi la morte non è dolorosa, e per i casi in cui lo sarebbe, ci sono risorse mediche adeguate che possono essere usate con successo. Solo, bisogna conoscerle, ma purtroppo non è sempre così. Ci sono manuali di medicina che ancora riportano concezioni ormai tramontate sulla presunta dannosità di certe sostanze e di certe pratiche palliative, e nelle università si insegna poco su questo tema, o addirittura si insegnano cose sbagliate. Anche ai medici, dunque, è dedicato questo libro, perché apprendano una parte tanto fondamentale del loro lavoro, a beneficio di tutti.
