Per la nostra formazione culturale, accettiamo difficilmente ciò che non è supportato da prove fisiche, ma, con le sue parole: “Non vengono offerte prove fisiche. In fondo non ho segnali evidenti che sia morto. In verità segnali non ne ho mai avuti, non così evidenti. Eppure sono morte. Erano morte... Ho portato con me la morte senza saperlo. No: devo essere fiduciosa. Se non avessimo un briciolo di fiducia non avremmo tentato ancora. Abbiamo tentato perché vogliamo avere fiducia: ancora. Probabilmente è vivo. Voglio godere della vita di mio figlio. Voglio esserci. Ci sono! Ma se muore? Che ne faccio di questo tempo? Come faccio...? » Perdere un figlio durante l'attesa non rende migliori, così come si usa dire per trovare un valore positivo a qualcosa di tremendo, ma certamente rende diversi. Si cambia e non si torna più indietro. Col tempo certi spigoli possono essere smussati, certi traumi possono essere digeriti e sopportati, ma non si torna più quelli di prima, nemmeno se si riesce ad avere il figlio vivo che si è tanto rincorso.

Solitamente ci si limita a pronunciare a denti stretti: "L'ho perso", l'interlocutore si ammutolisce, abbassa lo sguardo e, se non ci travolge con commenti inopportuni, dopo un rapido "Mi dispiace", cambia discorso. Resta la sensazione che si parli unicamente di un incidente di percorso, qualcosa di poco conto che deve essere accantonato frettolosamente per andare avanti, perché un figlio è tale solo se nasce vivo, altrimenti non si sa bene cosa sia. La realtà è che dietro la perdita di un figlio, il suo aborto, c'è un insieme di gesti gravosi che devono essere compiuti per forza. Quindi ci sono emozioni da affrontare che costringono a prendere decisioni sofferte, a meno che non siano gli altri (gli addetti ai lavori della medicina) ad arrogarsi il diritto di decidere per noi. Infine ci sono domande, molte domande che vorrebbero risposte, ma di sovente le risposte non ci sono o non si trovano.
