Bound in quarter red morocco with gilt spine and marbled boards. Mild rubbing; generally a fine copy. Pages are clean. Includes the notes of Dr. Cerise first printed in the 1844 edition. F-X Bichat 1771-1802 Famous french physician and anatomist. Garrison's History of Medicine refers to him as the creator of descriptive anatomy. His book Recherches physiologiques sur la vie et la mort was first published in 1800. According to Garrison and Morton: "When Volta questioned the validity of experiments claiming to show responsiveness of an ex vivo heart devoid of blood flow and nervous connections Bichat obtained permission to experiment upon the freshly killed bodies of those guillotined during the French Revolution. His trials on both laboratory animals and human cadavers led him to conclude that cardiac excitation by electricity would occur only when the organ was stimulated by direct contact." No marks or inscriptions to contents. No creasing to covers or to spine. A very clean very tight copy with bright unmarked very slightly foxed boards, tanned end papers and no bumping to corners. Gilt lettering to spine and edges untrimmed. The vellum spine is spotted with brown markings. 54pp. Thought to have been published originally in 1485, the treatise here reproduced gives an account of the various remedies and curative methods adopted in the middle ages for checking the advance of the terrible diseases such as the Black Death. The text of the reproduction covers 18 pages and the introduction 36 pages. Reproduced in Facsimile from the copy in the John Rylands Library (No. 3).

Pool (1885-1970) was a U. S. Rabbi, civic and communal leader, and historian. Pool, who was born in London, pursued his rabbinic studies, first at Jews' College, London, and then at the Hildesheimer Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin. Pool went to the U. S. In 1907 to become minister of the Sephardi Congregation Shearith Israel in New York City, the oldest synagogue in the U. S. He served there until his retirement in 1956. Pool's other posts and activities included: president of the New York Board of Rabbis; member of Herbert Hoover's food conservation staff; field organizer and director of army camp work of the Jewish Welfare Board during World War I; U. S. Representative of the Zionist Commission in Jerusalem to help implement the Balfour Declaration; regional director for Palestine and Syria of the Joint Distribution Committee; founder and director of the Jewish Education Committee of New York; president of the Union of Sephardic Congregations; president of the Synagogue Council of America; chairman of the Committee of Army and Navy Religious Activities of the National Jewish Welfare Board; vice president and president of the American Jewish Historical Society; and U. S. Delegate to the NATO Atlantic Congress in London. Pool wrote several significant works and monographs in the fields of American Jewish history, religion, education, and Zionism, and edited and translated Sephardi and Ashkenazi Hebrew liturgical works.
