‎Philadelphia: L.D. Caulk. Very Good. 1899. Hardcover. Date is approximate. Contemporary maroon buckram brief title "Practical Points" lettered in gilt on the spine. This is a nonce volume consisting mostly of the column conducted by "Mrs. J. M. Walker" in the monthly pages of the noted dental journal -- 'Dental brief : a monthly magazine of dental art science and literature.' The author achieved wide renown in the circles of American dentistry in the last decade of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth. She had been born Jeanie Mort in New York in 1836 but she was very much a Southerner first by sympathy and association and soon by residence as well as she moved to the south as a young teacher. At the conclusion of the war between the states she married Dr. J. R. Walker who had been a Confederate officer. Walker moved to New Orleans and established a dental practice. Dr. and Mrs. Walker also maintained a summer home in Bay St. Louis Mississipppi. Mrs. Walker published stories and poems in the New Orleans papers and journals. When her husband died in 1887 she continued her active interests and contacts in the dental world and became noted far and wide for her compilations of new methods discoveries and interesting anecdotes published in the 'Dental Brief' from 1894 until her death in November 1907. Her column became so well known that it is difficult to imagine an American dentist practicing during the years marking the turn of the century who was not familiar with "Mrs. J. M. Walker." Clearly one of her readers was inspired to save her "Practical Points" and have them bound up into this volume for reference. At the beginning of the volume the un-named commissioner has had bound in three plates in sepia halftones depicting the new x-ray photographs which would transform the practice of dentistry during these years. Also the volume contains an extract of a report from the annual meeting of the National Association at Old Point Comfort -- at the extreme tip of the Virginia Peninsula at the mouth of Hampton Roads -- evidently an effort at reconciling the Southern Northern and Western pracitioners of the dental arts and sciences. Most likely the owner of this volume saved these particular pages for the 14 full page halftone portraits of the luminaries of American dentistry at the time. Mrs. Walker's "Practical Points" were paginated naturally in their original context in issues of 'Dental Brief.' The binder confronted a paucity of dates has chosen to bind these contributions using the original page numbers in ascending order. The dates of the contributions are thoroughly mixed up and it is not possible to assert whether this volume collects all of Mrs. Walker's "Practical Points." But the collection here certainly represents a broad and deep slice of the dental ideas and techniques of the time as seen by a well informed and respected compiler the widow and mother of dentists but not herself formally trained. .
