Publisher: Ann Arbor : University of Michigan Press. c. 2009. Trade Paperback. xiii 198 p. Fine condition. --- Information regarding the book: "Moving Beyond Prozac DSM and the New Psychiatry" offers an analysis and critique of contemporary psychiatric practice from a variety of critical perspectives ranging from Michel Foucault to Donna Haraway. This contribution to the burgeoning field of medical humanities contends that psychiatry's move away from a theory-based model one favoring psychoanalysis and other talk therapies to a more scientific model based on new breakthroughs in neuroscience and pharmacology has been detrimental to both the profession and its clients. This shift towards a science-based model includes the codification of the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders to the status of standard scientific reference enabling mental-health practitioners to assign tidy classifications for any mental disturbance or deviation. Psychiatrist and cultural studies scholar Bradley Lewis argues for "postpsychiatry" a new psychiatric practice informed by the insights of poststructuralist theory. paperback
New York & Boston:: Little Brown 2009. Fine in a fine dust jacket as new. First printing. "Bradley traces a 1905 voyage to Asia by Roosevelt's emissary William Howard Taft who negotiated a secret agreement in which America and Japan recognized each other's conquests of the Philippines and Korea. Roosevelt's flamboyant pistol-packing daughter Alice went along to generate publicity and Bradley highlights her antics. Each port of call prompts a case study of American misdeeds: the brutal counterinsurgency in the Philippines; the takeover of Hawaii by American sugar barons; Roosevelt's betrayal of promises to protect Korea which greenlighted Japanese expansionism and thus makes him responsible for Pearl Harbor. Bradley explores the racist underpinnings of Roosevelt's policies and paradoxical embrace of the Japanese as Honorary Aryans. Bradley's critique of Rooseveltian imperialism is compelling but unbalanced." Maps photographs notes index. Map endpapers. 387 pp. Little Brown, hardcover

Catholic Courses 2013-02-01. DVD. New . New Sealed in Original Plastic. 8 Part Video Course. The intersection between Church and State has always been a sticking point for Americans especially for those in public office. Despite John F. Kennedy's proclamation of an "absolute" separation of Church and State faithful Catholics have long struggled to maintain a connection between the faith and politics. Even though the Founding Fathers made it clear they believed that a personal religion had everything to do with politics somewhere in our country's history we've lost that understanding. Nonetheless the fundamental principles of Christianity and Catholicism continue to influence literature academia social issues and political parties. Join Professor Birzer for a study in American history and politics; how catholics have shaped our country in the past and how they continue to influence its direction into the future.
