THE SUN ALSO RISES
New York: Grosset & Dunlap 1926 but ca.1933. Reprint. Octavo 19.25cm; lime green cloth with titles stamped in hunter green on spine; hunter green topstain; dustjacket; vi2-2605pp ads. Subtle discoloration and some gentle nudging to spine ends else Near Fine with the topstain bright and unfaded. Dustjacket is gently spine-sunned lightly shelfworn with a few shallow nicks and short tears to spine ends and extremities and a 1.25" closed tear at lower front flap fold; Very Good. Hemingway's great Lost Generation novel about a group of American and British expatriates who travel from Paris to Spain. The pictorial jacket which depicts a flapper in a sleeveless green dress was reportedly Hemingway's favorite among all his books and he was quoted saying he preferred it to that of the original edition published by Scribner's. An odd variant retaining the spelling error on p.169 but misprinting his last name on the spine. A stunning copy of a key Hemingway title and a high-point of Art Deco dustjacket design. Cited as one of Cyril Connolly's 100 Key Books of the Modern Movement and basis for the 1957 Henry King film starring Tyrone Power Errol Flynn and Ava Gardner. cf.Hanneman A6c & Grissom A6.1.l. Hemingway Ernest
The Sun Also Rises - A Bantam Book Complete & Unabridged #717
New York: Bantam Books 1949. Stated at copyright: Bantam Edition Published September 1949. Pictorial wraps moderate shelf wear. Pages generally very good; attractively toned. Vintage name inside cover: "Milton Starr". Bind good; some uneveness to text block. Hemingway's great post-World War I novel first major work and the classic novel of the "lost generation". A vivid exploration of the moral wasteland of Europe in the Twenties and of the sterility and despair of postwar life. The hero Jake Barnes has suffered a war injury leaving him impotent. Hopelessly in love with the seductive and flamboyant Lady Brett Ashley Jake leaves Paris to accompany Brett her drunken fianc and an American boxer to Pamplona watching as she falls for a young bullfighter. The expatriate crowd that Hemingway portrays so vividly passes their lives in an aimless alcoholic haze against which the local fiestas and the running of the bulls seem by contrast full of vitality--a quality that is alien to them. The settings are romantic - the bull ring the Paris streets the bars cafs and hotels - but Hemingway invests them all with a disillusion that undercuts the glamour of expatriate life. Six page of pictorial adverts at back. 212 pages. Insured post. First Edition. Paperback. Good. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. Book. Bantam Books Paperback

Hemingway Ernest
The Sun Also Rises.
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1926. First edition first issue of the first printing with the misprint "stoppped" on page 181 line 26 in the first issue dust jacket with the misprint on the front panel "In Our Times" vs. "In Our Time". Octavo original black cloth. Fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket without any restoration. The Annette Campbell-White copy brought $120000 at Sotheby's in 2007. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional example. The Sun Also Rises was published by Scribner's in 1926 and a year later in the United Kingdom by Jonathan Cape under the title Fiesta. Though it initially received mixed reviews it is now "recognized as Hemingway's greatest work" Meyers 1985. The fictional plot depicts a love story between war-wounded and impotent Jake Barnes and the promiscuous divorce Lady Brett Ashley but the novel is a roman clef; the characters are based on real people and the action is based on real events. Hemingway proposes that the "Lost Generation" considered to have been decadent dissolute and irretrievably damaged by World War I was resilient and strong. Naturally themes of love death renewal in nature and the nature of masculinity are heavily investigated. For example the characters engage in bull-fighting which is presented as an idealized drama: The matador faces death and in so doing creates a moment of existential nothingness broken when he vanquishes the possibility of death by killing the bull Stoltzfus 2005. The Sun Also Rises is seen as an iconic modernist novel for future generations Mellow 1992 although it has been emphasized that Hemingway was not philosophically a modernist Reynolds 1990. "The Sun Also Rises is Hemingway's masterpiece - one of them anyway - and no matter how many times you've read it or how you feel about the manners and morals of the characters you won't be able to resist its spell. This is a classic that really does live up to its reputation" David Laskin. Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover
