Ernest Hemingway
Across the River and into the Trees Arrow Classic
Arrow. New. 1994. Soft Cover. 009990960X Soft Cover BRAND NEW UNREAD BOOK Ernest Hemingway was born in 1899. His father was a doctor and he was the second of six children. Their home was at Oak Park a Chicago suburb. In 1917 Hemingway joined the Kansas City Star as a cub reporter. The following year he volunteered as an ambulance driver on the Italian front where he was badly wounded but decorated for his services. He returned to America in 1919 and married in 1921. In 1922 he reported on the Greco-Turkish war before resigning from journalism to devote himself to fiction. He settled in Paris where he renewed his earlier friendships with such fellow-American expatriates as Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. Their encouragement and criticism were to play a valuable part in the formation of his style. Hemingway's first two published works were Three Stories and Ten Poems and In Our Time but it was the satirical novel The Torrents of Spring that established his name more widely. His international reputation was firmly secured by his next three books; Fiesta Men Without Women and A Farewell to Arms. He was passionately involved with bullfighting big-game hunting and deep-sea fishing and his writing reflected this. He visited Spain during the Civil War and described his experiences in the bestseller For Whom the Bell Tolls. His direct and deceptively simple style of writing spawned generations of imitators but no equals. Recognition of his position in contemporary literature came in 1954 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature following the publication of The Old Man and the Sea. He died in 1961. . "A" on the copyright page and yellow lozenge on the backstrip of the DJ. Very Good in Poor DJ: Book shows indications of careful use; just a hint of wear to extremities; a bit of scuffing near the titles at the backstrip; considerable spine lean. Binding remains quite secure; text clean. DJ is split along the front hinge and at the outside edge of the front panel so that the DJ is now in three pieces held together only by the mylar cover; else in remarkably good shape: shows a couple of tears at the head of the backstrip; moderate wear to extremities and very mild rubbing; price $3.00 has not been clipped. NOT a Remainder Book-Club or Ex-Library. 8vo. 308pp. Black cloth boards with gilt signature on cover gilt lettering on spine. Photograph of Hemingway on back of DJ by Paul Radkai. Hardback with DJ. In the fall of 1948 Ernest Hemingway made his first extended visit to Italy in thirty years. His reacquaintance with Venice a city he loved provided the inspiration for Across the River and into the Trees the story of Richard Cantwell a war-ravaged American colonel stationed in Italy at the close of the Second World War and his love for a young Italian countess. A poignant bittersweet homage to love that overpowers reason to the resilience of the human spirit and to the worldweary beauty and majesty of Venice Across the River and into the Trees stands as Hemingway's statement of defiance in response to the great dehumanizing atrocities of the Second World War. Hemingway's last full-length novel published in his lifetime it moved John O'Hara in The New York Times Book Review to call him "the most important author since Shakespeare." Ernest Hemingway
Across the River and into the Trees
Jonathan Cape - London 1950 Book. Hardcover. A first UKedition of acclaimedAmerican authorErnest Hemingway's 'Across the River and into the Trees'. The first chapter opens on the last day in the life of protagonist Colonel Richard Cantwell who is duck hunting in Trieste. Much of the novel is a protracted flashback with Cantwell thinking about a young Venetian woman Renata and about his life as a soldier during the war. In Italy Hemingway had met a young woman Adriana Ivancich with whom he was infatuated and he used as the model for the female character in the novel. A central theme in the novel is death and how one faces death. Ernest Hemingway 1899 - 1961was an American author and journalist. His economical and understated style had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction while his life of adventure and his public image influenced later generations. The dustwrapper is handsomely illustrated. Condition: In a green cloth binding with an embossed cover design. Externallysmartwith some shelfwear onlywith slight discolouration to the edges and some sunning to spine. Dustwrapper generally sound with some wear and browning to the extremities and some loss to spine. Internally firmly bound with generally bright and clean pages throughout. Overall:VERY GOODwith a GOOD dustwrapper. Jonathan Cape - London hardcover

ACROSS THE RIVER AND INTO THE TREES
NY: Charles Scribner's Sons 1950. First printing. Hardcover. Good /fair. 5 3/4 x 8 1/2 in. Black cloth boards with gilt signature on cover gilt lettering on spine. This is a true first ed first printing with the "A" on the copyright pg and the yellow lozenge on the spine. Unfortunately some bonehead put the DJ in one of those foul early wrappers. Condition of book is GOOD ; cellotape on top and bottom front and rear covers. Front cover very clean spine faded by water rear cover stained upper edge by water. No water damage to text. No smell. Binding tight and text very clean with no markings. All pastedowns the fep and rfep also have marks from that damned wrapper. DJ condition is FAIR ; not price-clipped $3.00 colors good some mild rubbing closed tear upper spine water wrinkling to rear. And of course that lovely red damnable lining from that obnoxious wrapper which I've picked away carefully. This was the Hem's last novel and generally regarded as a stinking mess. Appropriate. In new archival Mylar wrapper. Fiction. RGR. NY: Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover
