Racconta Leo Spitzer in una pagina memoriale che in gioventù, una volta avviato allo studio delle lingue romanze, aveva assistito con iniziale sconcerto alle lezioni di linguistica francese tenute dal suo maestro, il grande filologo romanzo Wilhelm Meyer-Lübke. Educato nella Vienna di fine Ottocento al culto dello stile di vita francese, appassionato spettatore delle commedie francesi messe in scena nei teatri della capitale, il giovane Spitzer non sapeva ritrovare traccia dell’esprit francese nei nudi mutamenti linguistici esaminati freddamente in quelle lezioni. Dalla duplice istanza di seguire il modello di studio fornito dalla linguistica storica e prendere nel contempo a oggetto d’analisi un autore provvisto di una fortissima individualità stilistica nasce il lavoro di esordio (1910) del ventitreenne Spitzer, qui proposto per la prima volta in traduzione. Al centro del saggio campeggia l’inesauribile invenzione lessicale di François Rabelais, ma continue sono le digressioni ora nella letteratura francese più recente (con particolare riguardo a Balzac, cui è dedicato il capitolo conclusivo), ora, per influsso dei contemporanei lavori freudiani sulla psicopatologia della vita quotidiana e sul motto di spirito, nella lingua d’uso nella Vienna dell’epoca.
