Rabelais' amusing extravagant and satirical pentalogy of 16th century adventures of two giants was perfect material for Dwiggins' delightfully whimsical woodcut-style miniature illustrations. One of the central works of world literature and possibly the final word on sausages. 800 30 blank 193 5pp.<br /> <br /> Almost without exception an exact reproduction of the first four books of the 1556 edition the only change noted in Pierre Paul Plan's bibliography is an added anti-Calvinist line in the third book. Very clean and neat boards with just a touch of fading to the spine. Gilt titles to spine. Marbled end papers. The original vellum covers are bound in. The front leaf has staining to the top edge and a chip to the edge. Rear inside cover has a loss of one corner. The actual work is clean and tidy throughout. It is composed of 120 fantastic beasts allegedly but possibly not all drawn by Rabelais along with a page of description/ commentary on each. Pages are cut in slightly varying sizes. The introduction to this edition is written by Richard Lesclide under his pseudonym of "le Grand Jacques." A very nice copy. 18 242pp. 200 by 120mm 7¾ by 4¾ inches. Conforms to FirstSearch / OCLC: 489894898 . Deuxième impression la même année que la première impression. Un très bel exemplaire de cet ouvrage. Relié en demi-cuir avec des planches marbrées.
