"</em></p><p>In response to his friend's repeated invitations Delacroix spent nearly two weeks in Nohant in June 1842. He wanted above all to rest "vegetate" as he put it and enjoy the pleasures of the countryside. Back in Paris he replied on the 8th stating that he had received the crate and calling the person who had brought it to him a cheat and an imposter demanding postage. He asked his friend for a small purse left in Nohant a purse that Solange had given him and a small cord from Algiers. He concluded: "The weather is awful for the nerves. When you dreamed that you saw me did you dream that you were the Duchess of Berry I send you all my sincere embraces but I am very sad" Corr. gén. de Delacroix t. II p. 116.</p><p>Using the slang present in Eugène Sue's work we understand that Sand is here in the middle of reading The Mysteries of Paris. Unlike George Sand Richard Wagner who was also present at the premiere considered the music "noble moved and even new and exhilarating" although he criticized Halévy's failings in simple orchestration.<br />2 In Horace which George Sand was then writing she staged a rapin a pupil of Delacroix but there were no "few pages on painting". Is this an article intended for the Independent Review – which it has just created – but which it has renounced The word written in postscript confirms that it is an aesthetic reflection that focuses on "color" and "form".<br />3 Possible reference to an English restaurateur or caterer frequented by George Sand.<br />4 <em>Lélia avec son moine et son mort</em> is the third work offered by Delacroix to George Sand for the gifts of 1842. It is a pastel depicting Lélia kneeling near Stenio's corpse while the monk Magnus "in the shadows leaning stiffly against the wall of the cave darted on her his sparkling eyes". The subject was treated several times by Delacroix.<br />5 This is the <em>Femmes d'Alger dans leur appartement</em> a painting presented at the Salon of 1834 where it caused a sensation. A synthesis of orientalism and romanticism this painting expresses a deep "melancholy" for the poet and art critic Baudelaire.<br />6 George Sand refers to the school of Ingres as a "Silhouettist school". We know the adversity between the two painters that animated the artistic scene of the nineteenth century. Internally an excellent copy with original wraps bound in; occasional light foxing and small paper loss to margins of last two leaves neither affecting text. Octavo collates complete with 31 pages. An exceptionally rare copy of Sand's first work on social justice of which only 500 were printed. This copy is the only one known to have come onto the market with none in the modern auction records and the only other held at La Bibliotheque Nationale de France.<br /> <br /> Having dedicated the first decade of her career toward writing novels about women's internal and social struggles George Sand made her first move into activism with Fanchette. Shocked by the story of a young girl with mental illness who had been refused refuge in a convent and was soon after discovered pregnant and arrested for begging Sand opted to expose the events in a set of letters printed in the Revue Independente. Following a wave of public outcry "Sand decided to have the letters printed in brochure form with the plan that half the copies would be distributed free to the workers of La Chatre the others sold for the benefit of Fanchette. Five hundred copies of this brochure of thirty-one pages were printed and circulated. The Fanchette case therefore revealing as it did an appalling lack of sympathy for the poor and misfortunate convinced George Sand that an effort should be made to awaken the citizens of La Chatre to their duties as members of a community" Bowes. This publication marked a new phase of Sand's writing career which more directly emphasized social justice particularly for vulnerable women. A rare and important work. An unusual archive of sample product letters addressed to the famed N.N. Hill Brass Co. of East Hampton Massachusetts which from the 19th- into the 20th-Century was one of the largest manufacturers of toys and bells. The preserved samples offer an essential colour and texture guide to the materials used for children’s toys as well as other novelty items produced by the company up through World War I.

Hughes; Barber Leather Co.; N.N. Hill Brass Co. 1893-1918. 4to. 72 letters some mimeographed others typed carbon copies and a few ALS sized 5.75 x 9.25 in. up to 8.5 x 11 in. many on steel-engraved letterhead a couple on ruled paper and many featuring the offsetting from the leather dyes with over 40 attached samples of papers White coated sign muslin foundry sand and assorted leathers. All preserved in archival mylar sleeves in recent full calf 3-ring binder w/ stamping. An exceptional archive of original TLS many with original samples of paper leather and even sand which were used in ever increasing quantities by the noted manufacturer of sleigh bells bells pull toys and many other toys for children from the Gilded Age through World War I. The earliest letter dated Feb. 10 1899 includes two paper samples from the Henry Lindenmeyr & Sons Paper Warehouse in New York on Bleeker Street noting that “we can furnish in the shade of your sample at $ 8.00 per hundred sheets basis 25 x 36. We could not make less than a thousand yards.†Sixty or the majority of the letters and samples were sent by the Barber Co. beginning in 1902 and continuing into World War I. Their letters and samples describe the colour grain and general finish of the included samples as well as their perfect applications in “baby carriage straps shawl straps small cases i.e. for toys small tool boxes†and of course sleigh bells and bell hangers and bell flappers as well as handle grips. Leathers encompass Red Straight Grain Cowhide Pigskin straps Black Bell Leather Walnut Strap Leather and specialized leathers for tumbling purposes for brasswork. Barber 1836-1909 was the longtime owner and operator of the Barber Leather Co. in North Adams until his death when his son Archer Barber took over the business. Many of the samples offered to the Hill Brass Co. are mounted on TLS and TLS copy letters from Harry S. Millard who later was brought into the Barber Co. in 1914 as Treasurer of the Company. The samples here include splits black pig leather as well as embossed strips in assorted coloured leather Caulkins & Post whose building at 484-494 Main Street in Middletown was considered one of the first “modern†stores and specialized in drapes window shades furniture and bicycles before opening up their successful card dealership in 1903. The Hill Brass Co. required products beyond leathers & papers as shown by the reply to their request for a quote for White Sign Muslin waterproof textile intended for use on children’s carriages and go-carts. For their manufacturing processes they required foundry sands and the Pettinos Brothers based in Columbia Ceylon Bethlehem PA and Mexico sent them a sample of their plumbago “high grade Ceylon stock.†There is even a May 29 1905 solicitation letter from F. von Bardeleben after seeing the Hill Brass Co. exhibit at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair mentioning that his company can supply a “very fine grade of non-poisonous unchangeable paints to be used for painting toys.†The N.N. Hill Brass Co. founded by Norman Newton Hill 1863-1950 in 1889 operated until the early 1960’s was one of the largest factory’s in the World producing bells & toys and by the 1930’s produced Walt Disney merchandise. Along with the Bevin Brothers and other local Massachusetts foundries they manufactured Salvation Army bells sleight bells bicycle bells alarm bells and more. See: N.N. Ce portrait fait partie de l'une des entreprises éditoriales les plus caractéristiques de la fin du XIXe siècle : La Galerie contemporaine publiée de 1876 à 1884 réunit 242 biographies illustrées de 410 photographies dont 241 reproduits en photoglyptie par la maison Goupil & Cie Ce procédé photomécanique nouveau connut pendant trente ans un énorme succès dans la presse et l'édition grâce à une impression stable diffusable en grand nombre et bien moins coûteux que les tirages argentiques. George Sand est la première figure féminine à être publiée dans la Galerie Contemporaine. Le portrait reprend l'un des fameux clichés exécutés par Nadar en mars 1864 : une série de huit clichés de la romancière au mois de mars 1864. La bonne dame de Nohant ne s'appréciait pas physiquement et ne fit confiance qu'à Nadar pour poser lequel consacra de longues heures à la photographier jusqu'à ce que l'image lui convienne : « Les épreuves de ma photographie n'ont pas encore très bien réussi chez Nadar j'y retourne demain." écrit-elle à Maurice son fils le 8 mars 1864 à Paris. Nadar qui avait toujours admiré la romancière l'avait placée en tête de son Panthéon Nadar 1854 et lui avait dédicacé un livre Quand j'étais étudiant 1856 : « À madame George Sand enthousiasme fervent et profond respect » ; la romancière deviendra par ailleurs la marraine de son fils Paul. Précieuse épreuve dédicacé par Georges Sand qui devait décéder l'année même de cette parution le 8 juin 1876 si bien que les portraits signés sont absolument rarissimes George Sand n'ayant que peu d'occasions de les avoir en mains. On ne connaît qu'un autre portrait dédicacé de la série Nadar au petit format carte de cabinet à Charles-Edouard de Vasson et quelques autres tirages dans ce même format carte simplement signés.
