This copy is signed three times by Patsy Ruth Miller on individual photo plates from the motion picture. The film that made Chaney an international star in his role as the deformed hunchback Quasimodo. Patsy Ruth Miller came to acclaim as well. Some moisture staining to the outer margin of one plate else very good in a dust jacket with some light chipping and small tears. Guernsey 1857. unbound. 4 pages front and back with each two-page spread measuring 8.25 x 10.5 inches Guernsey British Channel Islands Hauteville House March 22 1857 in French but roughly translated to Martin Besnard sending warm thanks to Besnard for coming to the defense of the Hugo name -- a story he heard through their mutual friend Dulac who managed to escape from the Bonapartiste police. Hugo enthusiastically expresses his appreciation and describes himself as "only of the newest laborers in the struggle.of which his correspondent is a glorious veteran." In closing he would like to believe that France has made some lead ways as far as intellectual progress and human liberty are concerned.and hopes that they will meet "and it will be a joy to personally shake your intrepid and noble hand." This letter grades very good to fine condition. The iron gall ink has caused six letters in various words to appear as if they were cut out of the letter. This is a normal phenomenon and does not detract from the letter.<br/><br/> French author best known for "Les Miserables" who spent over 19 years of his life in political exile.<br/><br/> unknown books

Wrappers lightly used and soiled several stamps with business card stapled inside front wrapper else a very good copy. An anonymous unspecified draft of this screenplay from Victor Hugo's novel. A version of the novel SEA DEVILS did make it to the screen in 1953 written by Borden Chase and directed by Raoul Walsh with Rock Hudson and Yvonne De Carlo. We can't tell if this script is an early version of the released film or another entirely different script from another writer. This copy belonged to Costel B. Grozea who was a cinematographer with a not particularly long list of films to his credit. unknown books

"The Spanish Dancer is a 1923 American silent costume epic starring Pola Negri as a gypsy fortune teller Antonio Moreno as a romantic count and Wallace Beery as the king of Spain. The film was directed by Herbert Brenon and also features a five-year-old Anne Shirley appearing under the name "Dawn O'Day." The film survives today.1 Restored by the EYE Film Institute in the Netherlands the movie was shown at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. on August 5 2012 accompanied by the 1916 Lois Weber film Shoes. The film is essentially the same story as Mary Pickford's Rosita which was filmed around the same time as The Spanish Dancer with Negri's old colleague from Germany Ernst Lubitsch directing. Victor Marie Hugo 1802-1885 remains a household name today; he was a prolific author who published many popular works including this one also known as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Les Miserables". "Notre-Dame de Paris" was "the first work of fiction to encompass the whole of life from the King of France to Paris sewer rats" n.b. quote from Wiki and was translated into English two years after publication; both the story and the characters have stamped themselves upon our cultural consciousness and have often been turned into films plays and even the opera and ballet. <br/><br/>Frans Masereel 1889-1972 is considered one of the most famous Flemish woodcut artists of his time and can be counted as one of the fathers of the modern graphic novel. The 1920s saw a revival of the medieval woodcut tradition with Masereel cited as "the undisputed king" of this revival. He is perhaps best remembered today for his "wordless novels" particularly Mon Livre d'Heures Passionate Journey.<br/><br/>With an introduction by Andrew Lang 1844-1912 a prodigious author in his own right and literary critic; his "fairy tale" series remains highly sought after today. <br/><br/>This set with the attractive Ex-Libris plates on the front free endpaper of both volumes of Charles Vetter the plate designed by M.D. Carr and dated 1945. Mr. Vetter was apparently a pilot for American Airlines with a stylized version of their early logo placed upon a stack of books on the lower right; he apparently also loved sports with a set of ski poles and a tennis racquet with balls also incorporated into the design.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Bound in pink Ingres paper wrappers small illustration on the front wraps of the Cathedral of Notre Dame prior owner bookplates in both volumes as set forth above frontispiece in Volume One a Masereel woodcut of Quasimodo additional illustrations both full-page and in-text throughout the text; set in monotype Bodoni Arches paper quarto size 10.25" by 7.75" pagination: Volume One i-iv being the preliminary leaves i-xxx 1-309; Volume Two i-iv 1-376 377 colophon; limited edition of 1500 copies this no. 714 signed by Frans Masereel. The paper wraps still in their original glassine wrappers housed in a chemise and slipcase both of grey and tan mottled paper the chemise with the original cream laid paper spine label with black lettering.<br/><br/>___CONDITION: The volumes could almost be deemed fine; if read it was gently as the corners are straight the text blocks strong the hinges solid the wraps and interiors both clean and bright and other than the Ex-Libris plate of Charles Vetter free of prior owner markings; both text blocks slightly cocked and a hint of rubbing to the head and tails of the spines else fine. The glassine wraps also near fine with only the same hint of rubbing to the head and tails of the spine. The chemise strong and clean with sunning to the spine and the original paper spine label the paper covering the joints beginning to crack; the slipcase very good plus strong and sturdy some of the paper covering has flaked off revealing the cloth lining beneath the seams at the openings just beginning to separate one seam to about two inches the other three only about a quarter-inch. He is considered one of the greatest and best known French writers. In France Hugo's literary fame comes first from his poetry but also rests upon his novels and his dramatic achievements. <br/><br/>The Toilers of the Sea Les Travailleurs de la Mer is a novel by Victor Hugo that was first published in 1866. The book is dedicated to the island of Guernsey where Hugo spent 19 years in exile. Hugo uses the setting of a small island community to transmute seemingly mundane events into drama of the highest calibre. The Toilers of the Sea is set just after the Napoleonic Wars and deals with the impact of the Industrial Revolution upon the island. The story concerns a Guernseyman named Gilliatt a social outcast who falls in love with Deruchette the niece of a local shipowner Mess Lethierry. When Lethierry's ship is wrecked on the Roches Douvres a perilous reef Deruchette promises to marry whoever can salvage the ship's steam engine. Gilliatt eagerly volunteers and the story follows his physical trials and tribulations which include a battle with an octopus as well as the undeserved disapproval and criticism of his neighbors.<br/><br/>Limited Editions Club Bibliography 314. Hugo was a passionate patriot so impassioned of France's glory that at times he set aside facts for feeling: his "Battle of Waterloo" sways the reader to believe it was Napoleon rather than Wellington that came out ahead. To round out Hugo's text the Limited Editions Club invited "New York Times" Military Correspondent Drew Middleton to write a historically authoritative introduction a balance the Club claimed "absolves us from a charge of Gallic chauvinism." Précieux exemplaire ayant appartenu à Julien Stirling grand hugolien et hugolâtre de la fin du XIXe siècle et du début du XXe. Il comporte l'épreuve n° 1 du plus petit portrait gravé de Victor Hugo particulièrement adapté au format des Châtiments ainsi que son cuivre original monté sur le premier plat de la reliure. À la suite du coup d'État du 2 décembre 1851 qui voit l'arrivée au pouvoir de Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte Victor Hugo doit s'exiler. Après avoir interrompu Histoire d'un crime qu'il ne fera paraître qu'en 1877 et au moment où il commence à rédiger son pamphlet Napoléon-le-petit Hugo a déjà en tête son pendant satirique qu'il songe à appeler Les Vengeresses puis Le Chant du Vengeur avant de chosir le seul mot de Châtiments un « titre menaçant et simple c'est-à-dire beau » écrit-il à son éditeur Hetzel. Le recueil connaît une double édition à Bruxelles en novembre 1853 une version officielle auto-censurée par des lignes de points que Hugo nomme « l'Eunuque ». C'est la véritable originale du texte. Important exemplaire avec le cuivre original et l'un des huit épreuves tirées du portrait. Il est l'oeuvre du Strasbourgeois Julien Stirling attaché par la suite au Service historique de la ville de Paris. Il voua une passion pour Victor Hugo et une chronique toute entière lui sera consacrée en 1903 in Le Carnet « Un Hugolâtre Julien Stirling » p. 413 et suiv. Avant l'achat de la collection par Paul Meurice pour la création du musée Louis Koch neveu et héritier de Juliette Drouet avait dispersé quelques éléments de Hauteville House dont plusieurs furent cédés à Julien Striling provenant en particlier de la salle à manger. Stirling fit graver ce qui constitue le plus petit des portraits de Victor Hugo dont il ne fit tiré que huit épreuves. L'une d'elle n° 4 figure dans l'exemplaire Noilly puis Claretie de La Voix de Guernesey Vente Claretie n° 713 relié par Allô ce qui permet de cerner la date de la fabrication de ce portrait du vivant de Victor Hugo vente Noilly en 1886 Allô étant décédé en 1890. Le présent exemplaire est le sien dans lequel il fit monter sur le premier plat le cuivre original de ce portrait en conservant l'épreuve n° 1 montée en tête avant la couverture. Nous n'avons pu localiser aucune des autres épreuves de ce portrait hormis celui de l'exemplaire Noilly-Claretie. Cette édition de Bruxelles constitue bien l'édition originale pour ne pas dire princeps des Châtiments. « Un grand nombre de vers y sont remplacés par des lignes de points ; mais contrairement à ce qu'ont écrit plusieurs bibliographes je tiens de M. La seule variante des grands papiers est l'adresse « En France » qui remplace celle de « Genève & New-York ». La première édition clandestine comme toutes les autres est tronquée ; un grand nombre de vers y sont remplacés par des lignes de points car la loi Faider interdisait en Belgique de publier quoi que ce soit contre un souverain étranger. La préface contient la déclaration suivante : « Il a été publié à Bruxelles une édition tronquée de ce livre précédée des lignes que voici : « le faux-serment est un crime ». En France Bruxelles Hetzel 1853. 1 vol. 95 x 150 mm de 2 f. faux-titre et titre III préface et 392 p. Broché sous couverture moirée d'origine à toutes marges. . Édition originale clandestine. Un des 16 exemplaires sur vélin fin de Hollande n° 22. . À la suite du coup d'État du 2 décembre 1851 qui voit l'arrivée au pouvoir de Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte Victor Hugo doit s'exiler. Après avoir interrompu Histoire d'un crime qu'il ne fera paraître qu'en 1877 et au moment où il commence à rédiger son pamphlet Napoléon-le-petit Hugo a déjà en tête son pendant satirique qu'il songe à appeler Les Vengeresses puis Le Chant du Vengeur avant de chosir le seul mot de Châtiments un « titre menaçant et simple c'est-à-dire beau » écrit-il à son éditeur Hetzel. Le recueil connaît une double édition à Bruxelles en novembre 1853 une version officielle auto-censurée par des lignes de points que Hugo nomme « l'Eunuque » et une version clandestine à l'adresse fantaisiste de « Genève & New-York ». Sur cette édition complète furent réimposés et tirés à part 22 exemplaires en grands papiers 6 sur chine et 16 sur hollande dont le typographe bruxellois Samuel se montra très satisfait : « je regrette écrit-il de vous avoir envoyé les premiers cinq mille : les seconds sont infiniment mieux. ». La seule variante des grands papiers est l'adresse « En France » qui remplace celle de « Genève & New-York ». La première édition clandestine comme toutes les autres est tronquée ; un grand nombre de vers y sont remplacés par des lignes de points car la loi Faider interdisait en Belgique de publier quoi que ce soit contre un souverain étranger. La préface contient la déclaration suivante : « Il a été publié à Bruxelles une édition tronquée de ce livre précédée des lignes que voici : "le faux-serment est un crime". Premier roman publié de Victor Hugo Han d’Islande paraît le 8 février 1823 anonymement en quatre volumes in-12 chez Persan libraire improvisé et marquis ruiné auquel le jeune écrivain avait cédé son manuscrit pour mille francs. L’ouvrage s’inscrit dans un moment décisif de la vie de Hugo : après de longues fiançailles avec Adèle Foucher son mariage est célébré le 12 octobre 1822 rendu possible par la pension que lui accorde Louis XVIII. C’est dans ce contexte mêlé d’inquiétudes matérielles d’ambition littéraire et de bonheur enfin conquis que Hugo remanie ce texte commencé dès 1820. La part autobiographique n’est pas à chercher ici dans l’anecdote mais dans une certaine intensité sentimentale : ce roman de passions extrêmes de violence de fidélité et d’obstacles porte nettement la marque de cet épisod de jeunesse. La publication fut très tôt remarquée. Le Réveil dès le 23 janvier 1823 annonçait l’arrivée prochaine d’un roman d’inspiration nordique en le rapprochant de Walter Scott ; puis Le Constitutionnel le 15 février levait à demi le voile en attribuant le livre à Victor Hugo déjà connu pour ses Odes. L’édition est signalée dans la Bibliographie de France du 8 février 1823. Hugo n’en fut pourtant pas satisfait : l’impression fautive était chargée de coquilles au point qu’il souhaitera en donner dix ans plus tard une version corrigée chez Renduel en mai 1833. Charles Nodier consacra au livre un article bienveillant dans La Quotidienne texte fameux qui marqua le début de ses relations avec Hugo et d’une amitié appelée à compter. Mélodrame de jeunesse volontiers excessif Han d’Islande n’en demeura pas moins cher à son auteur qui y reviendra par la mémoire et par l’imaginaire ; plusieurs de ses scènes ou de ses effets annoncent déjà à distance l’univers de Notre-Dame de Paris. Agréable exemplaire en cartonnage de l'époque : les exemplaires de qualité de cette première édition en reliure d'époque sont fort rares. De la bibliothèque Frédéric de Pourtalès ex-libris.
