The first edition of this comprehensive study of 17th century Italian opera compiled by German musicologist Hugo Goldschmidt this copy belonging to English critic Edward Dent with his handwritten thoughts and a review of one of the operas mentioned. First edition. Volume I only with a second volume published in 1904 continuing the work. A study of Italian opera from the seventeenth century including 'Die romische Oper der Jahre 1600-1647' 'Die musikalische Komödie des 17. Jahrhunderts - Opera Buffa' and 'Das Orchester der italienischen Oper im 17. Jahrhundert'. One of the operas explored in this study is 'L'incoronazione di Poppea' the final opera of Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi. This opera is noted for being one of the first to use historical events and figures describing how Poppaea the mistress of Emperor Nero achieves her goal of becoming empress. This copy was owned by Edward Dent an English critic and musicologist who was Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge. Dent provides his views on a performance of 'L'incoronazione di Poppea' in a letter taped to the front paste down dated 1927. In addition Dent has included the programme for this performance as well as notes to the front endpapers and annotations to a number of the pages. With many pencil notations and stamps from C. Taphouse & Son music sellers to the title page. Bound in full cloth. Externally a little worn with damp staining to the lower boards. Rubbing to the extremities causing some loss to the cloth heavier to the backstrip tail. Letter taped to front paste down and pencil annotations to endpapers. Theatre programme to the front endpaper verso. Internally generally firmly bound with a slight strain after title page. Pages are bright with pencil and ink annotations.
