HUGO, Pieter (Johannesburg, 1976)
Messina/Musina
Roma: Punctum 2007. Rilegato sovracoperta hard cover dust jacket. Ottimo Fine. 46 fotografie a colori di Pieter Hugo. Testo di Stacy Hardy. Una conversazione tra il fotografo e Joanna Lehan. Edizione inglese. 4to cm 29x31. pp. 120. Ottimo Fine. Prima edizione First Edition. Musina is the northernmost town in South Africa. It lies on the Limpopo River on the border of Zimbabwe. The town was formerly known as Messina and in 2002 its name was changed to correct a colonial misspelling of the name of the Musina people who previously lived in the region . Hugo reflects on the wounds and scars of race class and nationality that persist here on the border of Zimbabwe a country in the process of self-destructing. The circumstances of Musina can also be seen as broadly reflective of any community that is confronted by transition.

Punctum, hardcover

Hugo, Pieter
Nollywood 2009 1ST EDITION & 1ST PRINTING - FINE COPY
Prestel 2009. First Edition First Printing. Hardcover. Fine. Prestel Verlag Munich and New York 2009. Hardcover. First edition first printing. Black leather covered boards with tipped-in four-color plate on cover and title stamped in gold on cover and spine; no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by Pieter Hugo. Text by Chris Abani Zina Saro-Wiwa and Stacy Hardy. Includes an illustrated list of plates. 120 pages with 41 four-color plates. 10-1/2 x 9-3/4 inches. BOOK CONDITION: Fine; a solid tight clean copy showing light rubbing to covers.

From the publisher: "The Nigerian film industry is the third largest in the world after those of the United States and India. Nigerian films often deal with the moral dilemmas facing modern Africans today and tell stories familiar to African families: of religion violence AIDS and economic hardship. Much as he did with his previous book the hugely successful The Hyena & Other Men Pieter Hugo documents the intense and incredibly colorful world of Nollywood from an unusual angle. His images are staged representations of Nigerian film sets featuring local actors who recreate themes and characters from Nollywood films: young men in military fatigues; witch doctors healers and saints; hunters with their kill; prostitutes in their rooms. The result is a series of surreal tableaux rooted in local symbolic imagery. Accompanying the photographs are texts by Chris Abani whose short fiction piece captures the chaos of the filmmaking process and an essay by Zina Saro-Wiwa on Nollywood's explosive growth and what it means to Nigerians. Presented in a simple and restrained format Hugo's gorgeous photographs reveal a little-known phenomenon to a wider audience. Prestel hardcover

PERMANENT ERROR: PHOTOGRAPHS BY PIETER HUGO
Munich Germany: Prestel Verlag 2011. First Edition. First Printing. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket As Issued. Munich Germany: Prestel Verlag 2011. Hardcover. As New/None As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 128 pages. Retrospective collection of color photographs. One of Pieter Hugo's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as hardcover original only. A brilliant production by Pieter Hugo and Prestel Verlag: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial hard boards with photographic reproduction pasted on the cover black cloth overboards and titles on the cover and spine as issued. Photographs by Pieter Hugo. Contributions by Federica Angelucci and Jim Puckett. Printed on pristine-white thick coated stock paper in Munich Germany to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is outstanding in every respect. Without DJ as issued. Presents Pieter Hugo's "Permanent Error: Photographs". Magnificent incredibly moving individual portraits of the terrible suffering and degradation in our Modern Age. Whom Pieter Hugo respectfully - but NOT fake "nobly" or sentimentally - photographs as humanity itself incarnate: Somehow surviving and somehow thriving amid utter desperation. "Offers unflinching yet striking portraits of humans animals societies and landscapes that shock and disturb. Documents a garbage dump in Ghana that has become the repository for discarded computers from around the world. These haunting images document the true cost of a misguided policy: The shipping of millions of tons of obsolete computers to developing countries. The computers are then burned to extract valuable metals effectively turning the site into a toxic wasteland that contaminates air soil and water for miles around. The story of a marginal community overwhelmed by poverty but where human strength and resilience shine through the inhumane conditions that Pieter Hugo lays bare" Publisher's blurb . An absolute "must-have" title for Pieter Hugo collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated in the year of publication in black ink-pen on the title page by the photographer: "Pieter Hugo 2011". It is signed directly on the page itself not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great photography book. As far as we know this is the only such signed and publication-year dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean crisp and bright. A rare signed copy thus. 60 color plates. "Permanent Error" was selected by The New York Times as one of The Best Photography Books of our second decade. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 3791345206. Prestel Verlag hardcover

Hugo, Richard
A Run of Jacks.

Minneapolis :: University of Minnesota 1961. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Near Fine copy with a touch of rubbing to the board edges in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. Author's First Book. This copy is inscribed anf signed by Hugo. Richard Hugo was a poet of the Pacific Northwest yet his renown attests to a stature greater than that of most "regional" poets. He is noted for the tight rhythmic control of his language and lines and for the sharp sense of place evoked in his poems. Hugo's images are urgent and compelling; he imbues the many minute or seemingly irrelevant details found in his poems with a subtle significance thereby creating a tension between the particular and the universal. This tension is considered central to Hugo's most powerful poems. In his poems Hugo reflected as much upon the internal region of the individual as on the external region of the natural world and he considered these two deeply interconnected.
University of Minnesota, hardcover
