Richard Hugo was a poet of the Pacific Northwest yet his renown attests to a stature greater than that of most "regional" poets. He is noted for the tight rhythmic control of his language and lines and for the sharp sense of place evoked in his poems. Hugo's images are urgent and compelling; he imbues the many minute or seemingly irrelevant details found in his poems with a subtle significance thereby creating a tension between the particular and the universal. This tension is considered central to Hugo's most powerful poems. Minor wear to the edges and a couple of scuffs at the spine tips and corners that bring out the white under the brown coloring. First few pages with dogears at the bottom corner visible in picture. Binding is tight and pages are clean and unmarked. Unclipped dustjacket with matching wear at the corner and spine tips with age toning to the lighter rear panel and folds. Important first book by this Washington state poet one of Theodore Roethke's first students who died suddenly of leukemia in 1982 at the age of 59. A beautiful copy wonderfully INSCRIBED and SIGNED: "For Justice William O. Douglas/with profound admiration/and hoping that you can/catch a glimpse of your/wilderness./Richard F. Hugo." Douglas a native of Washington and the longest-serving justice in the history of the Supreme Court was a prolific author who had extensive ties with the environmental movement. Douglas hiked the entire 2000-mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. In the landmark environmental law case Sierra Club v. Morton Douglas famously argued that inanimate objects such as rivers or trees should have legal standing to sue in court.
