(Valentine HUGO) - Marie-Laure de NOAILLES
Original ink drawing signed and manuscript postcard signed
No Location: s. n. 1951. Fine. A Surrealist ink-blot artwork s. n. No Location s. d. 1951 ; carte postale : 29 juin 1951 9.2 x 15 cm carte postale 89x14cm Une feuille et une carte postale Original ink drawing by Marie-Laure de Noailles signed Marie-Laure within the artwork appearing twice as a result of folding the paper while the ink was still wet. With an autograph postcard signed to Valentine Hugo with two inscriptions and some parts of the photograph drawn over. A Rorschach-like Surrealist decalcomania by Marie-Laure de Noailles created for painter and photographer Valentine Hugo the Queen of Hearts of the Surrealists. Beyond her many titles as muse fashion icon social figure celebrated patron of the arts writer and poet the Vicomtesse de Noailles was also an accomplished painter. Marie-Laure created an eclectic body of work exploring the feminine unconscious much like her contemporary and friend Valentine Hugo. This drawing is clearly inspired by Rorschach but above all by surrealist decalcomania a technique she shared with the great Oscar Dominguez her lover until the artists death in 1957. The style of this ink piece foreshadows her dreamlike paintings with their spread and blurred textures created in her studio in Hyères South of France during the 1960s. Valentine Hugo took part in the extravagant costume soirées of the Roaring Twenties hosted by de Noailles and her husband Charles and appeared in the scandalous film LÂge dOr by Buñuel and Dalí also financed by the couple. In 1930 the two women made possible the printing of Breton and Éluards surrealist masterpiece LImmaculée Conception by purchasing both draft and final manuscript. Valentine Hugo drew and painted several portraits of Marie-Laure de Noailles including the frontispiece for her collection of poems LAn quarante published by Jeanne Bucher. The Vicomtesse also sent along with her artwork a signed autograph postcard with an affectionate message: For my dear Valentine in remembrance of much cold snow and foolishness to forget the nasty car and to remember Aragons eloquence which surpasses all politics and also to greet him. 29 June 1951 with all my affection. Marie-Laure. The choice of Place Victor Hugo and its monument for her postcard is far from incidental: Valentine Hugo lived in a large apartment whose windows overlooked the square named after her great-grandfather by marriage in the 16th arrondissement. The Vicomtesse inscribed on the photograph Vive Hugo and then et Valentine followed by an arrow pointing to her balcony which she enhanced with drawings of flowers. The Vicomtesse spent several nights in her friends apartment during the German Occupation: One evening as they returned from Prunier a guard shone his lantern on her friends face. Who are you! Your papers! Whats your name And Valentine replied: Like the square. Laurence Benaïm Marie-Laure de Noailles. Rare ink-blot composition by the Vicomtesse of the Bizarre Laurence Benaïm dedicated to one of the leading figures of the Surrealist avant-garde. s. n. unknown

PHOTOGRAPHIE Portrait photographique de Victor Hugo Medallion photographic portrait of Victor Hugo
Paris: Pierre Petit 1861. Fine. Pierre Petit Paris s. d. 1861 6.20 x 10.20 cm une photographie contrecollée sur carton Medallion photographic portrait of Victor Hugo Paris 1861 62x102cm photograph mounted on card Original contemporary albumen print mounted on card. Notes on the back. The very first photograph of Victor Hugo with a beard. It was in January 1861 after a terrible sore throat that the writer decided to grow a beard: «I am growing a beard to see if it will protect me against throat-ache.» There are several references to the famous beard in Hugo's correspondence. «Conclusion: a man's head must be handsome well-touched with intelligence and illumined by thought in order to look well without a beard; a human face has to be very ugly indeed irredeemably deformed and degraded by the extreme thoughts of the vulgar life in order to be unattractive with a beard. Therefore let your beards grow you who are ugly and would be handsome instead!» Letter to an unknown correspondent 1845. As well as the aesthetic impact of this transformation there was a real thumbing of the nose at the Imperial state which had banned beards for teachers and professors. Pierre Petit unknown

THE TRUTH ABOUT WHOLEGRAIN MEAL 1791-1941.
Vermont: The Vermont Guild of Oldtime Crafts & Industries 1941. 1941. Good. - Octavo 9 inches high by 6 inches wide. Softcover a 4-page pamphlet titled on the cover page above a wood engraving by Roy Williams depicting the Weston Old Mill. A four-page war time pamphlet extolling the virtues of stone-ground wholegrain meal and promoting that offered for sale by the Vermont Guild of Oldtime Crafts & Industries. The edges are darkened and there is an indentation from a paper clip at the top. Folded twice horizontally with short tears to the edges of the top fold repaired internally with clear archival document tape. Good. <p>Together with the original 6 inch high by 5 inch wide order form printed on light blue paper: "This is my Order for Vermont Guild stone-ground 100% wholegrain Meals". There is a paper clip stain to the top of the order form.<p>From the collection of E. Harold Hugo president of the Meriden Gravure Company with an annotation penned in his hand at the top of the cover page: "you were about 100% right!"<p>The text by Vrest Orton recounts "The story of genuine 100% wholegrain corn and wheat meals now stone-ground in an old-fashioned Vermont mill by an interesting non-profit Society". Extolling the virtues of the Vermont Guild's stone-ground meal and in the last paragraph offering a "free recipe cook-booklet" with every order: "These were printed only after months of experiment until they worked for this special kind of wholegrain corn and wheat meal. I know as a matter of record that they are just right and how. For my wife and I did all the experimenting for 6 months and I ate all the experiments for 6 months. until we both became letter-perfect."<p>"The Vermont Guild of Oldtime Crafts & Industries. Just north of the Common on the millpond which dams the Wantastiquet is an imposing red mill headquarters of this unique non-profit Society founded in 1936. Inside are displays of early Vermont craft-tools and industrial apparatus. But in 1938 it was transformed from a static museum into a living one by making the tools and machines work so people could see HOW things were done. Perhaps the most successful was the stone grist-mill with two massive French Burh stones. This mill was belted to the old snail-shell turbine under the dam and today turns out several wholegrain meals and breakfast cereals distributed by mail into every state of the Union." Quoted from an article by Vrest Orton titled "The Weston Revival" published in "Vermont Life" magazine in the Fall of 1946.<p>The author Vrest Orton 1897-1986 was the founder of the Vermont Country Store. Born in Vermont Orton traveled throughout the United States and Mexico before settling down in New York City. He worked for H.L. Mencken on "The American Mercury" published "Dreiserana" "Vermont Afternoons with Robert Frost" "And So Goes Vermont" and co-wrote "Cooking with Whole Grains" with his wife Mildred Ellen Wilcox 1911-2010. Orton also founded the bibliophile magazine "The Colophon". Settling back in Vermont he and his wife started the Vermont Country Store in 1946.<p>RARE.
