Paris: circa 1930s. Crayon or chalk drawing in sanguine. 32 x 25cm. Annotated: "à Valentine bien affecteusement Paul.".Valentine Gross met her future husband Jean Hugo grandson of the influential French author Victor Hugo in 1917 at the home of Mimi and Cypa Godebski. In 1919 they were married with Cocteau and Satie as their only witnesses. Neither of Jean's parents consented to the marriage perhaps contributing to its eventual demise.In March of 1926 Valentine attended one of the first Surrealist expositions where she met Paul Éluard. Their meeting sparked a friendship that would continue until his death in 1952. In 1927 after working as costume designer on the set of La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc Valentine returned to Paris a full-fledged Surrealist; Jean Hugo however never embraced the Surrealist movement. In the years following their hurried nuptials their tastes diverged leading to separation in 1929 and finally divorce in 1932. Despite the end of their marital relations Valentine and Jean remained friends until her death in 1968.Provenance: Pierre Spivakoff 1933-2012…Après des études au Cours Simon Pierre Spivakoff crée à Paris le tout premier café-théâtre « Le Royal » situé boulevard Raspail où il met en scène des pièces de Fey¬deau Ionesco Dumas Rachilde Molière et Corneille. En 1973 il met en scène «Délirante Sarah» une pièce autour de Sarah Bernhardt où il interprète le rôle prin¬cipal. Le spectacle représentera la France dans de nom¬breux Festivals européens Rome Belgrade Berlin… et se prolongera à la comédie des Champs-Elysées durant toute l’année 1974. Habité par la divine Sarah Il est l’auteur du livre « Sarah Bernhardt vue par les Nadar » éditions Herscher 1997. Par ailleurs il monte « L’Homme aux camélias » au Théâtre La Bruyère ou « Monsieur Vénus » au Théâtre des Mathurins. Également metteur en scène et professeur d’art dramatique il dirigera de très nombreux acteurs avant d’ouvrir une classe de théâtre à l’American Center aventure qui durera plus de 10 ans. First edition of the most popular spiritual love emblem book which made the genre popular throughout Europe in the 17th century and beyond. By the end of the 18th century the Pia Desideria had been reprinted nearly 40 times in Latin French German Spanish Dutch Polish English Danish and Italian. This emblem book mixes tender messages of care with dire warnings to sinners and while it is written in Latin demanding a well-educated reader it proved to be wildly popular. One of the keys of the popularity of this work are the emblematic designs of Boetius Adamsz. van Bolswert ca. 1580-1633 each of which is accompanied by an explanatory caption. Born in Bolsward Friesland Boetius was a pupil of Abraham Bloemaert at Utrecht and went to Antwerp around 1618 joining the painter's guild in 1620. Boetius also worked in Brussels where he met and was inspired by Pieter Paul Rubens. Herman Hugo 1588-1629 a Brussels Jesuit was teacher at the Jesuit College in Antwerp and confessor of the Duke of Aerschot with whom he went to Spain where he was appointed army chaplain to Spinola. This book was used as a rhetorical example for students of Rhetoric at the Jesuit College at Brussels. Kemper born in San Diego California on November 21 1945 resided in Dallas Texas where he was Professor of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1971 from the University of California at Berkeley and spent the academic year 1971-1972 there as a National Endowment for the Humanities Post-Doctoral Fellow in Mexican American Studies before joining the SMU faculty. At SMU he served as Chair of the Department of Anthropology President of the Faculty Senate and member of the University Board of Trustees. His research interests included migration and urbanization history of anthropology community development tourism Mexico and the United States. His numerous publications include <em>Anthropologists in Cities</em> 1974 <em>Migration and Adaptation: Tzintzuntzan Peasants in Mexico City</em> 1977 <em>Migration Across Frontiers: Mexico and the United States</em> 1979 <em>Chronicling Cultures: Long-Term Field Research in Anthropology</em> 2002 and <em>Urban Life</em> 5th ed. 2010. Später wechselte er in gleicher Funktion in das Chlorkalkwerk der Usines de Produits chimiques im schweizer. Monthey und war 1900-1904 Chemiker am Bochumer Verein. D. wurde 1904 Mitarbeiter des Staatlichen Materialprüfungsamtes in Berlin-Dahlem wo er 1925 die Leitung der Abteilung für anorganische Chemie übernahm. Er war Mitglied der Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft sowie des Vereins deutscher Chemiker und publizierte Probenahme und Analyse von Eisen und Stahl mit Oswald -> Bauer 1912." Halle förderte E. dort die technische Chemie. 1889 gründete er ein privates Unterrichtslaboratorium für chemisch-technische Arbeiten und initiierte 1899 das Laboratorium für angewandte Chemie an der Univ. Halle. Seit 1894 Prof. folgte E. 1901 einem Ruf an die TH Berlin als Leiter des Anorganisch-Chemischen Laboratoriums. Auf dem Gebiet der organischen Chemie war E. an der Entwicklung der Farbstoffchemie beteiligt und setzte sich für die chemische Prüfung des Trinkwassers gegenüber der bakteriologischen ein. Auf anorganischem Gebiet identifizierte und analysierte er minder verbreitete Elemente und seltene Erden. E. prägte den Begriff "Edelgase" und plädierte als Bezugseinheit von Atomgewichten für H=l00.
