He is the father of Canadian artist Julius Griffith with his ink signature dated Oct. 1899 to front free endpaper. Small newspaper clipping from The Globe Nov. 1899 tipped to front free endpaper discussing various family's service in the army. On the verso of free endpaper Griffith has created a handwritten Character list of names from the book and who they represent in real life for example "Stalky" is Major-General L.C. Dunsterville "Hartopp" is H.A. Evans "M'Turk" is G.C. Beresford and "Beetle" is Kipling. Tipped-on to the rear free endpaper is a reproduction of a portrait photo on glossy paper captioned: "Stalky and Co. To-day". According to handwritten note in left margin: "From the Kipling Journal No. 36. This must have been taken in 1935 abt 53 years after they had left the U.S. Coll. Westward Ho." and in the right margin: "I received this the day we heard of Ki sic operation. The Sun Newspaper reproduced it. initialed J.H.G." Beneath the photo are handwritten the names of each person: Beresford; Kipling died 18/1/36; Gen' Dunsterville. A few insightful margin notes in pencil obviously from one who had been there. No writing marks or underlining except for an inscription dated Dec. 1899 on the front free endpaper. No bookplates. Spine is tight and crisp. Boards are flat and true and the corners are square. Boards are slightly bumped and there is a small gouge 1/4" on the front cover. There is no dust jacket. This copy has some other significant flaws including separation along the front hinge at the top and bottom 2" of the book. This separation goes to about page 3 which is no longer attached to the book but remains intact. The endpapers along the rear hinge are also separated from each other. The title page has a 4" tear from the top and a rear flyleaf is missing a large chunk. There is some foxing to the last few pages as well as some discoloration to page 310. In general however the pages are crisp and clean and the gold gilt lettering on the front board and spine remains intact. This is still an appealing copy that will look great on any bookshelf. Kipling's left-facing swastika trademark is opposite the title page. A right-facing swastika is on the gold embossed front cover decoration along with the head of an elephant. Spine has gold lettering and decoration. The dedication page has inked-number 14129 which may have been a library marking however there are no other signs that that was a library book. Interior text pages are tight white and free of any marks or stamps. The poem Let Us Now Praise Famous Men follows the copyright page which is followed by the Contents in Nine Chapters: In Ambush Slaves of the Lamp - Part I An Unsavory Interlude The Impressionists The Moral Reformers A Little Prep The Flag of Their Country The Last Term Slaves of the Lamp Part II. Originally published in serial form in 1897-98 this is the story of three teenagers in a 19th century school for preparing future officers for the British Army. Beetle Stalky and Turkey are the three unruly characters. The story is patterned after United Services College which Kipling himself attended.
