The Young People's Edition. 8vo blue cloth with gold lettering on spine pictorial dust jacket unclipped 4247 pages. EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION internally & externally! Tight bright clean.

About this Novel: Kim is the orphaned son of an Irish soldier stationed in India. Living a vagabond existence in India under British rule in the late 19th century he earns his living by begging and running small errands on the streets. When Kim is rescued by the British he is sent to school and trained as a secret agent. Kim is set with a choice to either follow a life of espionage the spiritual way of Tibetan Buddhism or a combination of the two.Kim unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. The novel made the term "Great Game" popular and introduced the theme of great power rivalry and intrigue. It is set after the Second Afghan War which ended in 1881 but before the Third probably in the period 1893 to 1898. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people culture and varied religions of India. Kim is considered by many to be Kipling's masterpiece and was directly responsible for his Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. This cloth-bound book includes a Victorian-inspired dust-jacket.

About the Author: Joseph Rudyard Kipling 1865 - 1936 was an English journalist short-story writer poet and novelist. Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book 1894 Kim 1901 and many short stories including "The Man Who Would Be King" 1888. His poems include "Mandalay" 1890 "Gunga Din" 1890 "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" 1919 "The White Man's Burden" 1899 and "If-" 1910. He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift." Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the United Kingdom in both prose and verse in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius as distinct from fine intelligence that I have ever known." In 1907 at the age of 42 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize and its youngest recipient to date.

Doubleday and Company hardcover

Plain Tales from the Hills

We ask you why spend your hard earned money and not feel good about how you spend it This book is offered by Literary Cafe a small company who believes in recycling good novels and giving historical/valuable works to good homes. The profits we gain supports The Ronald McDonald House Doernbecher's Children's Hospital Randall's Children Hospital both in Portland Oregon the Shriner's Children Hospital and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Condition: Fair binding is coming loose from the cover. No dust jacket. Was a copy read by what I assume a lot of ranch hand's which makes this copy a well loved novel.

About this Novel: Plain Tales from the Hills published 1888 is the first collection of short stories by Rudyard Kipling. Out of its 40 stories "eight-and-twenty" according to Kipling's Preface were initially published in the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore Punjab British India between November 1886 and June 1887. "The remaining tales are more or less new." Kipling had worked as a journalist for the CMG—his first job—since 1882 when he was not quite 17.
The title refers by way of a pun on "Plain" as the reverse of "Hills" to the deceptively simple narrative style; and to the fact that many of the stories are set in the Hill Station of Simla—the "summer capital of the British Raj" during the hot weather. Not all of the stories are in fact about life in "the Hills": Kipling gives sketches of many aspects of life in British India.
The tales include the first appearances in book form of Mrs. Hauksbee the policeman Strickland and the Soldiers Three Privates Mulvaney Ortheris and Learoyd

Rand McNally & Company hardcover

American Notes
"AMERICAN NOTES" by Rudyard Kipling. 1899 1st American Edition; Brown and Company; Boston. The book contains 7 essays as follows: At the Golden Gate American Politics American Salmon The Yellowstone Chicago The American Navy America's Defenceless Coasts
AMERICAN NOTESIt is hardly fair to Mr. Kipling to call American Notes first impressions for one reading them will readily see that the impressions are superficial little thought being put upon the writing. They seem super-sarcastic and would lead one to believe that Mr. Kipling is antagonistic to America in every respect. This however is not true. These Notes aroused much protest and severe criticism when they appeared in 1891 and are considered so far beneath Mr. Kipling's real work that they have been nearly suppressed and are rarely found in a list of his writings.

Condition:
Light soiling/staining to the front and back covers heavier on spine; worn top and bottom edges of the spine; sharp corners. Tight binding. Crack at front hinge between copyright and introduction pages. The pages are in very good condition - clean with no writing stains tears or foxing.

Brown and Company hardcover
