Never sold on any auction. Very good condition for its age.

This tale was translated to Russian by Korney Chukovsky and the short poem "The Cat and the Dog" was translated by Samuil Marshak. Illustrations were created by the famous Soviet artist Alexei Pakhomov 1900–1973. Pakhomov joined the Baron Stieglitz's School of Drawing in 1915. School was reformed right after the February revolution in 1917 and new teachers came with names like Dobuzhinsky Chekhonin and Shukhov among them. School was transformed to VHUTEMAS where A. Pakhomov worked in the workshop with Tyrsa VHUTEMAS Commissar leader and later with his new boss Vladimir Lebedev after a short period of an army service 11.1919—05.1920.

The Department of Children's Books was created in 1925 within the State Publishing House Gosudarstvennoe Izdatelstvo or GIZ. Marshak and Lebedev were appointed by Soviet authorities as new department leaders and Lebedev later invited Pakhomov to work on children books. The first design and illustration work of A. Pakhomov was the "Camp" book by E. Schwartz 1925 created in two colors. Later were "RVS" by A. Golikov "Summer" - an author's own illustrated book "Bucket" by E. Schwartz and many others.

About his work with "The Cat That Walked by Himself" A. Pakhomov wrote: "I used to illustrate only what I knew well what had connection with me and was close <.> I liked to draw what was around me. In this sense it may probably seem strange why I decided to illustrate R. Kipling the non-Russian author a sort of an alien and distant for us. However in this work I tried to use my personal impressions and experience"

Additional photos can be provided upon request.

Please note this item requires some paperwork for send out approx. up to 15 working days delivery so it might take some extra time to get this item delivered to you.

Gosudarstvennoe izdatelstvo, printed by Pechatniy dvor paperback
